Got all your books. Read all your books several times (thanks SOL I learned about you and your books). Keep learning each time I read them over and over... Many of your technics I modified to fit my fishing area... Each video from you is a great lesson. I can't say I'm a beginner... No way! But I'm willing to learn non-stop. And will read your books and watch your vids non stop. Thanks for you great work! And wish luck to your kids from me... ;) Wish I could meet you in person one day!
Hi Rob! Sorry it took so long to respond. It's the busy season. The other guys were throwing tin, and this was clearly outfishing them. The heavy needles and tins were about all that were gonna reach the fish at that time. They seemed to like the larger profile of the 7-inch needle.
Great video as always! Just wondering, I use the super strike 2 3/8 oz popper and it is the red eye sinking model. I'm wondering where ( in the water column ) it should be riding. I find that in the beginning of the cast, its hard to keep the plug on the surface. Thanks again.
John, Thanks again for a great video. When using an artificial, what downsides do you see to using a small teaser attached to a dropper loop on the leader? Thanks!
Hey John, I've noticed you cut a foot off of a few different rods you have, why not just buy an 8 foot rod? Or is it you want the action, of that 9 footers on an 8 foot length.
As always, this is a great video, but I wanted to know what factor tide plays in your approach to fishing. I tend to hit the surf at low tide but where I live in south jersey the beaches are completely flat and don't provide too many sand bars within casting range. Should I change my approach in areas like these?
Hey John, first off I want to say I'm a huge fan of your channel its been very helpful over the past 3 years ( you also gave me great advice at the fishing convention in NY in reference to being lonely when your out at sea). My favorite video was "how to keep a fishing log"... very insightfully. My question actually pertains to Luis Caro. Luis, at what point in your life did you decide to become a master angler?
hey john i know this really isnt the video to ask in but do you know what the speckled seatrout are after at all? ive been catching them down in the basin haha. so if u can tell me that would be great. Thanks John.
Hi John, enjoy your videos and read all of your books. I never see you fish teasers for bass. Seem like a lot of guys do during a sand eel run. Is there a reason why you don't use teasers?
you said keeping contact with the lure is most important; how do you keep better contact with the lure when a strong cross wind creates a lot slack by the time your lure lands?
Do you change things up when fishing a hard bottom vs sand? I fish the Vineyard a lot and have never witnessed the kind of success you seem to get off the LI beaches.
How would you know matt that these videos are done in shinicock? the reason why im asking is because im not familiar with the long island beaches. iv'e recently taken up surf fishing, and i am trying to locate where the hot spots are in long island. unfortunately, i have asked Mr Skinner where are some of the places which he frequently goes to so that he can help the rookie anglers like me, and many others im sure, but he has not replied back. but, if you dont mind helping retired guys like me out, and are familiar with some hot spots please don't hesitate in helping out a fellow angler. i promise i wont take all your fish. : ) thanks, and happy fishing!
Hey John, nice video. I usually would fish bucktails, tins or storm shads in daytime with whitewater like that. I have never used needlefish during the day. Needlefish seemed to work quite well in this video, I will definitely be giving that a try. Were the other guys using needles too? If not, how did their catch compare to yours? -Rob Jr LI Outdoorsman
Hi John, my surf setup is a 10 foot penn prevail and a Penn Spinfisher 5500 ssv. This setup would take a heavy beating down in Montauk, throwing out (mainly) SuperStrike poppers and Bucktails. Just wondering what would be a good line setup. Right now I'm using mono, although im leaning towards braid. Thanks again.
Hello Mr. Skinner I have purchased a Tsunami "blurpal" needlefish and have fished it at night. I realized that the plug wouldn't sink. Any suggestions? Thankyou!
Hey John, are you talking about the white water at your feet or the white water much farther out in the point of view? (Hard to tell with a gopro if the farther white water is in casting range) Also, you drag this lure on the sand? Is that true? Thank you!
I've been watching your videos like crazy and I've learned a million things from them. Thanks! I notice you have three books. Would you say the Striper Pursuit is your most comprehensive? Which should I get as a guy new to New England style fishing?
You probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost my password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Leighton Sonny I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hey John, Nice vid! I've been doing a lot of surf fishing lately and am looking forward to the cold water this fall and winter in the sound and ocean. I use mono a lot and tried braid on a freshwater rod and i really like it. I would like to use it on a saltwater application. What would be a safe lb test for a saltwater application throwing say heavier lures, plugs, avas, swimmers, bucktails, pencil poppers and so forth?
Mr. Skinner my name is Vincent Aracri I am 12 years old and go surf fishing in shoreham ny on the long island sound i like to use poppers or bucktails. I woud like to know how you know when to go how you gets so many fish and bites and if you could give me any tips for stripers
sorry the comment was to long I would like something that would give me the ability to throw those heavier lures and still be able to throw smaller lures like small bucktails, slug gos, and other small lures without breaking the heavy ones off. i use a 9 or 10 foot ugly stick medium action with a penn 6500 ss saltwater reel with a lot of line capacity. i am mainly switching for the extra distance. Thanks- JP
How much space do you keep from the lip of the reel and the line? I picked up a PENN SPINFISHER VI long cast 6500 and put it on my tsunami airwave elite 10 and a half footer is that a good combo for that type of rod or should I put my 5500 back on it and put the 6500 on a heavier duty rod?
