Fishing Hawaii Oahu Waikiki Ko Olina

Fishing Hawaii is something I always wanted to do. Went to Hawaii on business and that presented the opportunity to do it. I fished Waikiki and also fished Ko Olina. I was able to experience a lot of other things in addition to fishing which is why this video is more of a Hawaii video with fishing. You will see snorkeling in Hawaii and also some good food. I was able to release a really cool black triggerfish and while snorkeling you can see many butterfly fish. Some of the fish I caught were with bread balls. There was very little bait available and no bait stores near my hotels.
Hopefully you will enjoy the video enough to subscribe here / @fishfinder

Popular bait here in Hawaii are bread, squid, octopus, and shrimp :) You got a great shot of them eating bread! That black crab you showed is also really good for bait. Some people tie them to a hook and send them out. Aama crab.

Those fish eating the bread were mullet, that little 'slippery' fish is a hinelea lauwili, AKA wrasse that looks like a wili-wili tree leaf, typical easy to catch beginner fish.

Fish Finder: We moved from the west coast of Florida (Sarasota) to Key Largo last April where we met up with Heiko. Fishing the Atlantic is much better than the Gulf in Florida. If you have a choice, check out the east coast of Florida before you move.
@FishFinder
@FishFinder 6 лет назад
I wish that the decision could simply be solely about fishing. The reality is that there is also a cost difference between living on the water on the east vs west coast of FL. You are not the first person to tell me that they prefer the fishing in the atlantic vs the gulf.
@FloridaFishingCouple
@FloridaFishingCouple 6 лет назад
Fish Finder: we are fortunate in that both my wife and I work from home and travel periodically for work. That enabled us to move from the gulf side to Key Largo last year. We are just learning how to fish this side. The diversity of geography and species of fish is unbelievable.

Aiea Bay? What's up with that? I've lived in Aiea all my life. Well over 50 years. It's the first time I've heard of a section of Pearl Harbor reffered to as Aiea Bay. McGrew Point Barber's Point Pearl City Peninsula never Aiea Bay sorry

I worked at the Cinc-Pac-Fleet boat house for a few years located on Aiea Bay (small bay of Pearl Harbor near the Aloha Stadium). Its not public so you may not of heard of it.
@FishFinder
@FishFinder 6 лет назад
Nick... yeah I am not that familiar with anything. it was my first time to the island.
@jariol
@jariol 6 лет назад
I know the boat house it's near what used to be Marina Restaurant. Grew up catching barracuda by the ramp. Please don't take this the wrong way but unfortunately. Like many things here visitors and people who live here for a short while like to give things names that are easier for them to understand. Case in point mainlanders have tough time with Laniakea so they renamed it Turtle Beach because of the turtles. That small area you refer to as Aiea Bay and the ensuing park to encompass the Navy housing across from Forty Niners has been known as McGrew Point since before I was born in 61. Even that is not the true Hawaiian name.

Fish Finder You did a great job of fishing here! Catch and release to help our reef fish grow. The last fish you had there we call Hagi. They are edible but a bit of a pain to clean. Thank you for releasing it back into the water! They can be a nuisance fish sometimes but not entirely bad. Your kindness will bring you good fishing luck next time you are here!
@FishFinder
@FishFinder 6 лет назад
Thank you for the kind words. No way I was going to keep any of those fish. In fact, even when I fish here in the northeast or when I travel around fishing like I do... I never keep fish. I think I kept one flounder and that was the only fish I kept in the past 12 months.
@TBD_Fishing
@TBD_Fishing 6 лет назад
Fish Finder Catch and release is the best! Although there are special cases.. haha. I feed my family with what I catch and we keep only what we eat. In other cases we have to remove invasive species. One in particular is the Roi fish (spotted grouper) that eats dozens of our native species, reproduces rather quickly, and is entirely inedible.
@kripsak
@kripsak 6 лет назад
Use squid when your out there again, you can get like a box of squid from the grocery store, buy the smallest box you'll find, since your only using your travel rod. Thaw a few out, cut the tenticles off which is perfect for your travel rod, discard the head or use as chum. Cut the body in half length wise, then cut into thin strips, and put them in a few zip lock bags, and throw them back in the freezer. Should be set with bait for your entire trip.

Watching you videos and I noticed you have rod leashes. Good idea. When I fresh water fish from my kayak, I have rod floats. Not good for salt water but Ok for lighter fresh water rod & reels. I use 1/2" foam pipe insulation, cut a length to fit between the first guide and the grip. Wire ties or black duct tape works well. Less tangle with the floats. Just a thought. Thanks, Mickey ( I fish South Jersey lakes and the Ocean City area. )
@FishFinder
@FishFinder 6 лет назад
Mickey, yes in my older videos I have leashes. Not anymore. I had a situation with my kayak and ended up turning it over in very cold water. Got me thinking for a while about making everything safer and then I did a kayak safety video. The leashes are gone because I do not want to get hung up in them if I go over. I will keep one leash to keep fish. I am putting a video together that uses pipe insulation to float the rods with black electrical tape. plus a lot of other things to help protect your gear safely
@1539Mickey
@1539Mickey 6 лет назад
I look forward to watching that video. I'm always looking for new ideas. I don't have peddle power on my kayak, so I'll always have a cord on my paddle. ( I don't want to be up a creek without a paddle.)
@FishFinder
@FishFinder 6 лет назад
My paddle floats...but I suppose if it floated away from you and you have no pedals to get it you would be tossing lures at your paddle to pull it back in your direction.

You both are actually correct you can fish Waikīkī during even years but odd years are closed season. Waikīkī is a preservation. Where you were fishing however is illegal you arent supposed to be fishing off the wall because there are alot of people and beach goers surfing swimming etc at the wall, there is also a sign that says no fishing on the wall. However if you stand on the wall facing the Ocean and fish on the right side of the wall on that stretch of beach it is legal. Just make sure where you fish is legal and you know what you are doing. Also please know your fishing and diving information before you do anything.
