Growing up I've fished in the outer banks from beaches in Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags head. Over the years I have learned a lot, and I hope to share some of my knowledge with you.
In this video, I will go over the basic rod and reel setup to fish the Outer banks of North Carolina. I will give you my rod and reel recommendation and teach you how to setup a basic bottom rig.

That's great to hear! Be sure to check in with the local bait shops! They usually point you in the right direction, and let me know how you do! Tight Lines!

I haven’t fished since I was a child on Long Island. I always loved surf fishing. I moved around a lot out west but now reside in NC. I’m looking to get into fishing again. Thanks for this video. I am also a wildlife photographer so I think I have the patience needed for fishing LOL.

Good info for a beginner or experienced angler. I agree with the shorter rod, Most people "over rod" for the surf, as well as casting to far out. But you will probably want a longer rod too if the surf action is heavy, to defeat bigger swells.
@HicksHooks
@HicksHooks 3 года назад
I totally agree! Thanks for the input. However, every time I bring my "Hatteras Heaver" down there, I never end up using it. I guess you can never have enough rods. LOL. Thanks again for watching, and all of the support!

@HicksHooks

Excellent! Good luck out there! Remember, you don't have to cast too far out to catch the fish. They are mostly in the trough where the waves are breaking near the beach.

Just found your site, I'm also from Md and fish the Outer Banks been doing that every November going on 10 + years and sometimes in the spring, your advice for beginners is spot on, i use to buy my high/ low rigs but make my owe now and a few other rigs, i to like using ugly stix rods but only in the 10' lenght but i do use 9' and 8' but i do bring a 12' heavy just incase and this year i will try out my 7' was looking for a good reel to match it up with, thank you

Awesome! I appreciate your support! I enjoy tying my own rigs too, but for people just starting out, the store bought bottom rigs do just fine and aren't too expensive. Tight lines my friend!

I'm new to fishing the OBX. What size rod and reel are best for sound fishing? Will be fishing the Currituck and Albemarle sounds.

Hey Luke Sorry for the late reply. I use an Ugly Stik 7' medium heavy action. I also prefer the Penn Battle. If you stop into one of the local bait shops, they should be able to help you out! Tight lines, and thanks for tuning in!

To keep your hooks from getting tangled, you can run the loop down over the top of the swivel then thread the hook thru the wire loop shortening the dropper. Same on the bottom, slide the loop up from the bottom over the sinker snap then thread the wire loop. Your hooks will never tangle up.

Thank you for this video, very much a beginner and looking to come down for a long weekend early September with a few buddies to try our luck on the surf. We really like the idea of being able to take a truck out onto the beach, should cape point be opened around then? Or do you even recommend it for that matter? Are there other areas where we can drive out onto the beach other than cape point that may be better? Completely new to this and trying to get a fun experience in! Just subscribed!
@HicksHooks
@HicksHooks 3 года назад
Thanks for your support Frank! I don't know if these spots are better, but you can drive down by Coquina Beach & Oregon Inlet. I know people have great luck at the inlet. If you are staying up north on the OBX, you can drive on the beaches in Corova. Tight lines buddy, and I hope you guys have a great time!

Sounds like a blast! I have never been fishing off the surf in late December. I know it starts to get cold and windy at the beginning of the month. It is very peaceful down there at that time though. If you do have nice weather, I'd recommend trying the little bridge down in Nags Head. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful holiday trip! Tight Lines!

Oh, before I forget! Can you advise me where you see the most birds near kitty hawk, Duck or nags head? I do a lot of bird photography and was wondering if you could suggest any good spots since fisherman always have birds around. Thanks for the great video and I hope to do some fishing down there too
@HicksHooks

Thanks so much for watching! I would suggest walking down by the sound to see the birds. There are always Osprey and Pelicans flying around, but on the sound you will see more ducks and shore birds.

@@HicksHooks thanks!! I will check out those areas! Thanks again. I wanted to ask you, on Long Island we used to catch blue fish (snapper are the young ones we called them) and striped bass. Are these found at the outer banks also? Blue fish put up an amazing fight that I have never forgotten about from my childhood. Just curious thanks!

What type and poundage line are you using and how can I get a tide chart before I go down
@HicksHooks
@HicksHooks 2 года назад
I'd check online for the tides. I think TW's Baitshop has the tides listed. I usually use 12 pound test for my bottom rig.

@safiyaphoto 10 месяцев назад
So may i ask , what poundage and how many feet of braided line and brand do you recvomend for obx corolla aurf beach fishing
@HicksHooks
@HicksHooks 10 месяцев назад
Great question! I usually prefer to use 12-15 pound mono on my 7 ft surf rod. Last time I was out, I had one rod with mono and one with braid. I feel like the braid got more caught up in the tide and wind, whereas my mono stayed tighter to the bottom rig and was able to cut through more of the wind and the tide. I would recommend stopping into one of the local bait shops when you get there, and have them string up your reel. It's usually a little cheaper or about the same price as buying online. Tight lines and thanks for tuning in!

Hey Michael, Thanks for watching. I love my Ugly Sticks... I have a bunch and on the beach my 7' medium is wonderful to work with.
