7.2m Fishing Pole purchased to test as a possible portable operations antenna mount for ham radio.

Set up using my KM4ACK EFHW antenna after replacing the broken wire using DX Engineering 26ga Portable Antenna Wire. The antenna was set up in a slower configuration and contact was made using my QRP uSDX radio.

I just ordered this pole 3 days ago. I love your idea on using the cord at the top for the antenna hookup. Thanks for doing this video.

I did the same with my portable UHF rig. I had tons of interference from the aluminum fishing pole. To solve, I added a length of 550 cord to the end of my antenna and tilted the mast over so I had 1/2 wavelength of clearance from the antenna to the mast, and that cleared things up a ton.

I just got that pole in the mail yesterday. Going to use your 550 cord trick. Thx buddy. Great video.

Very good. It definitely doesn’t have to be paracord, any strong string will work. It just happened to be what I had available.

Very cool. I ordered one of those radios and a similar mast a week or so ago. Just came across your vid today…antenna is already here and I’m doing some prep. Nice intro music!

Thanks Steve. Always curious about poles like these and how they do in the wind. 73 de ki5gx

It was very windy that day as you can tell from the video. It flexed a little, but these poles are very strong and flexible. It has no issues at all.

New to ham here. Why did you have the tape around the copper pipe? Was that structural to make it fit the fishing rod or was it insulating? Thanks for the video.
@stevek4stb221
@stevek4stb221 Год назад
Good question. The copper pipe was a little thinner than the inside of the rod, so the tape gave it a nice snug fit.

Awesome video Steve! Thanks for the great ideas--I have this exact telescoping pole and have been watching a bunch of similar videos for mast-support inspiration, and yours is the setup I'm planning to re-create :-) Running the paracord through those top sections to create the antenna-securing loop was very clever! Just curious, what type (or thickness) of paracord worked best for you there--is that 550 by chance?
@stevek4stb221
@stevek4stb221 Год назад
Yes, I used 550 paracord. It would have been a little easier if I would have removed the inner cords though. Really any type of string or braided fishing line would work though.

How many Watts are you pushing out on that Transceiver ?

Thanks for making this video. I've been wondering about that very pole and it's good to see that it worked for you. It looks like you are recording with a smartphone. Are you using the internal mic or an external mic? If you watch my video about what I use to record with (the thumbnail is my daughter holding a stedicam) I think it might help with your wind noise a little. In any case keep up the good work. 73 Wes

Yeah, I was just using my iPhone. I need to pick up a mic and gimbal, but I keep finding radio gear to buy instead… lol.

Put a wind muffler ("dead cat") on your microphone.

Yeah, I need to get one. I’m obviously a radio operator and not a professional RU-vid producer! LOL. Thank you for the advice though.

Way cheaper than these carbon fiber and other expensive things that these other sponsored channels just get given to them to use
@stevek4stb221
@stevek4stb221 Год назад
Yes, it was very affordable and worked well. It is not as durable however. I was recently working on a linked dipole design and the top few sections broke pretty badly. Never had an issue with the EFHW though.

Annoying music over riding your voice, then constant wind noise thruout your vid. Very disappointing as I just took delivery if a 26' TENKARA & really needed your advice. Best 73 de VA3ROD
