November 16th, 2017 -- For my 148th outing of this year, I decided to go down to the banks of the Schuylkill River for another edition of my "Packed Bait" series. If you haven't watched the previous episodes:
Magic Baby Shad: bit.ly/2zMrljl
KillerBee Brined Shrimp: bit.ly/2iuTFN9
Also, big shout out to Daniel Craig and Thom Carroll from the Phillyvoice.com news website. They interviewed me that day, and wrote an article on Extreme Philly Fishing: bit.ly/2zRDGAj
So, yeah, folks...in this episode, we attempt once again another type of "packed bait." This time -- not so conventional -- we used pieces of Irish Spring Soap for the Catfish! Heh.
Don't forget to participate in the give-away!!! To do so:
1. Subscribe to the Channel, if you haven't yet.
2. Like the video!
3. Comment below if the soap actually worked, and WHY.

I would like to thank *Daniel Craig* and *Thom Carroll* for shooting the shots and writing this article at the *Phillyvoice.com**.* For those who are interested in knowing a little bit more about what I do, and what being a RU-vidr/Content Creator means to me, I encourage the read: www.phillyvoice.com/philly-man-turns-extreme-love-of-fishing-into-youtube-stardom/ And p.s. *SOAP for the win!!!* EDIT: I see some people very very concerned about the consequences that my small pieces of SOAP can bring to the local wildlife and environment, which is GOOD! However, folks, please do some research before spreading wrongful information!!! *About the FISH:* every chemically made product has a certain level of toxicity to living organisms and the environment. Ultimately, it all depends on the amount of it that you put in the water. The negative effects of the small pieces of soap that I used in this video are insignificant! In nutrition, there are threshold levels for intoxication and toxicity. And I guarantee you that the amount of soap used in the video will not bring the fish any harm AT ALL. I am intoxicating myself more than I intoxicated those fish, since I go to Burger King once a week for my "heart attack" meal full of cholesterol. *About the ENVIRONMENT:* from EPA data, 1 oz. of biodegradable soap needs to be diluted in 20,000 ounces of water for it to be safe to the environment and the living organisms in it. 20,000 oz = ~156 Gallons = ~592 Liters. I want to point this out, so folks don't confuse the Schuylkill River with a FISH TANK. Lots of folks usually say "Oh...don't clean your fish tank with soap!!!" There is a reason for that -- soap is anti-bacterial, and a fish tank can easily be LESS than 156 gallons. Thus, the soap will be TOO CONCENTRATED and be bad for the fish in it (break of the nitrogen cycle, and slime coat in fish). As a side comparison, lawn products and chemicals flushed down the toilet bring WAY WAY more impact than my poor soap in this video! The run off water from those chemically treated lawns + chemicals flushed down the restrooms is what brings algae blooms and summer kills each and every year! Think about it.

Yes! The Irish Spring soap works. It's because one of the ingredients is animal fat or tallow. My grandfather used to use soap as catfish bait in his hoop nets in Louisiana. I never knew why it worked. Now I do. Thanks and keep up the good work!
@willmidolo7261
@willmidolo7261 6 лет назад
Fishing with Irish Spring works well while fishing for catfish because the soap (solute) creates a solution with the help of the water (solvent). This causes the soap to dissolve and the soap components are mixed around in the water. Because one of the main components of Irish Spring Soap is beef fat or beef tallow, the catfish are attracted to the bait, and hopefully, as you saw in the video, bite on the soap. Very informative video Leo. Tight lines!

Soap does work! It may take a little while before you get a bite but it works! The fatty acids in the soup are being spread through the water as the soup dissolved. So the “Soup chum” would attract the fish.

Yes soap does work with catching cat fish because of a solute (Irish spring soap) turned into a solution (schuylkill river water) with the help of a solvent (components of soap+water) and solution (beef fat (tallow)+ sodium hydroxide (lye)+water)

Irish Spring Soap does work due to the fact that the animal fats in the soap attract the catfish. Soap in particular only attracts catfish and scares off other fish from the scent. I really likw that it is cheap and easy to use without any mess. Another great video!

It depends on the fat content of the soap, but YES it does work! It works because it dissolves slowly in water and leaves a trail for catfish to follow back to the bait.You proved it to be true by catching fish on it in right there in PA.

I have used Ivory soap with some success. Never tried Irish Spring, I had an allergic reaction to it, but guess it would be OK for bait. We would melt the Ivory and add different scents and ingredients to it. Let it cool and reform and then cut it up. Soaps are usually the bait of choice for trot lines in the South, because the bait put out scent over a long period of time. We can't use trot lines in California, so we used it as a straight hook bait.

Yes it does work, the scent receptors that they rely on are very strong, they can’t see very well so since the sight sense isn’t very strong they use their sent sense, since soap is very strong in scent and the oder’s release in the water the catfish smell that and perceive it as food so by the time they get to it they taste it, then you set the hook and you got yourself a catfish.

Fabulous! The soap works because it has animal fat, tallow. All soaps do not contain tallow; you will have to read the contents. Technically, if a cleaning agent does not contain animal fat, it is a detergent, not a soap. (The least expensive bars usually have tallow.)
@alishajones8781

Of course the soap will work mainly because of the way many soaps are made today. Today, soaps are made from fats and oils. Solid fats like beef fat , or pork fat which are used to form bars of soap that stay hard and start dissolving as the more time it spends on the water.

Haha of course soap works! The production of soap is simple. It is essentially tallowed beef fat that is reacted and blended with a lye, usually a hydroxide. When this combination of Beef Tallow and Sodium hydroxide dissolves in the water, the fish don't spell the soap like we would. The tallow and hydroxide separates, and the scent of the tallow rings the dinner bell for these catfish. They eat liver, why wouldn't they like the smell and taste of fat? So yes, soap is an excellent bait to use for catfish when you're coming up short for other options.

I really like how you explained the soap ingredients because at first I wouldve said it doesnt work since it's mostly alkaline. After I saw the fats and acids it made more sense because catfish senses blood and etc which is alkaline/nuetral but if you think about it, when it rots the acids gets released. So the soap is a perfect mixture but to see if it would catch bigger fish, you can try to make a fish imitation and see the results.
