Hi Ian I am new to your channel. I have been fly fishing over 20 years mostly trout or sea trout ,recently even sea bass here in the north of Ireland. This year I am wanting to learn to cast a double handed Salmon rod and so I have enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing. Liked and subscribed too. 👍

That is the river that started my love of fly fishing as I was given a salmon road and a few tips on casting by a Mr Much his estate slips my memory unfortunately, as his daughter was a friend of my ex wife. I also helped the Deveron Baliffs on an operation one night in the late 90's with Bob Davidson the river Ugie Baliff as I was friendly with him as the club treasurer. I have been lucky enough to fish most rivers in the Nort East of Scotland but the highlight for me was Voshmid and accompanying lochs on North Harris Estates Isle of Harris during my time as Bank Manager in Stornoway. The river Creed in Stornoway is one of the hidden gems of a river alongside the Laxay on Soval estate. Thanks for the memories and after nearly 40 years I wish casting was as effortless as you make it loook.

Hi John, many thanks for taking time to comment. Im not sure about Mr Much, but Im sure my father, who was also a friend of Bob Davidson, knew him. I remember the name being mentioned. The casting I got from my dad and had my first ever salmon on the Ugie. Happy days.

@@IanGordonsalmonfishing Sorry for the confusion I was treasurer on the Ugie in the late 90's but we helped the Deveron Ballifs likewise they helped us to patrol the rivers and beaches for nets. It was the Mutch family that had an estate on the Deveron where I first cast a 15ft rod but I only fish with an 11ft for all occurrences now & it has served me well. I have sent a text to a fishing pal to see if he can remember the beat. Their modern bungalow sits on a hill overlooking the beat with the biggest expanse of glass I had ever seen & it impressed him that I went straight to the window to look at the river rather than sitting down as offered. I wonder if you know if Bob is still with us. When you are in your 30's everybody seems so much older but it is nearly 25 years since I was around those parts. Now I live in the Central belt enjoying retirement and every so often spending a day playing at being a farmer on my best friends farm in Tarland.. I will need to get out & practice that cast on my local fishery, sad days chasing rainbows but nothing will ever match my day of 50 sea trout to the boat at Amhuinnsuidhe 20 years ago so I gave up fishing for the silver tourists as that will never be matched in my lifetime, all but two returned alive..First Salmon was on the Don, where? slips my memory but it was way too big for the net we had.

@@johnbrown3951 Funnily enough, i was shooting geese near St Fergus and talking to someone about Bob Davidson and the old ugie Bailiff, Jock Roger just last week. I didnt know Bob myself but Jock I shot pigeons with and he’d show me how to fish the Ugie. Very happy memories.

@@IanGordonsalmonfishing I shot on Bob's syndicate at Troop Head for snipe, woodcock & wildfowl and shot Geese on Slains Estate owned by The Sir Richard Sutton Settled Estates on the Banks of the Ythan and their big loch where someone from a University counted 26000 geese one roost which also gave me the right to fish the Ythan Estuary as I was very friendly with the Keeper Mike Sinclair and his son Murdo. Seems a world away now.

Some nice looking water should have been somebody home , I like the short 11’6 and 11’3” rods for our rivers there perfect , and your absolutely right when you have a 14’ or 15’ Spey rod in your hands you just want to cast it a mile because it’s so much fun . Enjoy your winter . Happy Trails 🥃🥃

Great outing Ian, that line color contrast can really help the viewer. The Snake roll modified to a stop was a interesting presentation, almost like a poke. Sweet rod set up, glad to see a short blank can do the cut. Keep at it Ian, I’ll be up early next time. Thank you for sharing from US, NJ mag

Thanks pal. It was a little cast just to see how the blank worked with this weight of line, also to trial my new radio Mike. The rod worked really great and I did like the way the line looked on the video too. I’ll use this set up again.

The line was 21g. I’m trialing different line weights for those rods right now. This I felt was a little heavy but still nice to use.

Ian can you please tell me what the difference is between a micro Spey rod and aswitch rod?????
@IanGordonsalmonfishing
@IanGordonsalmonfishing 2 года назад
Hi Derek, The switch rod is a predominantly single handed rod that can be used as double hander and the microspey is the opposite. The microspey would be used by someone who’s main method of casting would be spey techniques or using the rod in a double handed format, whilst the switch rod would be predominantly used in single handed scenarios. Because of this, The handle configuration is different in each. The switch rod has a short lower and upper handle, whilst the handle on the Microspey, both upper and lower is longer and much more in tune with a double hander rod. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Tight lines. Ian
