Thanks for the comment and question. I love the analogy about clever fish. Maybe you’re right, but who knows. The rod allocation on each beat were decided by the particular landowners, but generally, since the early 80s many more rods fish the river. As an example the Gordon Castle water which fishes around 40 rods would have fished with around 8 when the fishing was good. Tulchan 24 right now, would have been 8. It all changed when estates began to sell their rods. The lower numbers earlier will have been friends of the owners only.
What a lovely piece of water Ian. I would prefer a wee bit more of a current through it but as you say make the most of the conditions you are presented with. My first Salmon was on a day like that on the Don. When we stopped at Sloan's in Inverurie for that special fly that we would invariably be drawn to in any tackle shop that is designed for anglers not fish and adorns our tackle boxes until the next clear out we were told to forget fishing turn back for home a get a tan. What do they know about fishing!!! Bob Patterson aye used to say keep fishing as there is usually a stupid one that will take a fly and sometimes there is, in fact do we all just catch stupid fish. I wonder what it would be like to hook a clever one, maybe they are the ones that snap us or throw the hook or escape at the net. I always enjoy your content but especially from rivers I have wet a line on but you are on beats from a different part of the river. I have a question that has always intrigued me. How is it worked out how many rods can fish a beat?
Another lovely video Ian full of great tips and advice. Such a pleasure to see you being so courteous to other rivers users. Too often I have seen fisher people rant and rave at canoeists …in my experience all it does it put there backs up and cause bad feeling. Best to be courteous like you were and hope they repay you by keeping as far to the edge of the pool as possible. Hope Kobe enjoyed the eel !😂
That looked like a "Bonnie" bit oh water that just looked fishy. Why is it the fish are always lying just off the far bank. I always wonder if the Ghillies on the other bank are saying the same thing "the fish are lying just off the far bank".
Was enjoying your video until your comment on Putin - you do realise that the war was initiated with a CIA coup in 2014 which armed Nazi militia and started a civil war in Donbas as part of the US plans to Balkanise Russia? It was Boris Johnson on behalf of the US and NATO who sabotaged peace talks in 2022 and are responsible for countless deaths?
I'm sorry that this spoiled the video for you Simon and apologise that it upset you. I can understand this given your views on whats happening. He was the first name that came to my head. I should have used Hitler instead. Apologies again. I will actually take this comment away when I get a moment.
Hi Ian & Andrew, Its all we have is memory's. and listening to your fishing memory's was fantastic. The statement Andy made that we only have 20 years left to fish for a salmon made me very mad. What has 40 years of pandering to these Biologists & scientist done for the salmon. Their achievement is putting the salmon on the red list of endanger species. You name one river that's full of fish. Ian you stated the riparian owners are hand cuffed and can't do anything, we have to be more active and get the hatcheries up and running. To finish, personal its not 20 years its more like 10 years if we are lucky. Alan Robinson
Please please please continue to chat to that very knowledgeable gentleman and put it out on RU-vid because I for one could listen to the two of you all day. The one thing I liked about Lewis & Harris albeit twenty years ago when I was a Director of The Stornoway Angling Assoc Ltd was that on every Saturday which was handover day on North Harris Estates incorporating Amhuinnsuidhe Castle the Stornoway Angling Assoc & Harris Angling club took it in turns to fish the water and I certainly made the most of those opportunities to fish Voshmid and some of the other lochs on the estate. This meant that the locals got to enjoy what the guests were enjoying for £10 each rather than the rumoured £20k a week or five days as they had. You know my thoughts on hatcheries and the pair of you I assume are erring to that way of thinking. My question to the two of you is if Atlantic Salmon are going to die out in our rivers within twenty years why are we not encouraging the Pinks to set up breeding stocks to continue the sport that we all love. If they are overcoming the obstacles to set up new colonies in our rivers could they get to the stage of population you guys enjoyed in past years longer ago than the twenty five of my Salmon fishing experience. I know I am going to take some heat for this but I am still asking the question.
Ho John, im glad you enjoyed our chat and that it spawned this interesting question. Personally I dont think salmon are heading for extinction but unless we adopt some radicle measures then we may not be angling for them 20 years from now. The Pink salmon will, in my opinion, colonise slowly anyway as we will not have the ability to stop them should they wish to do so. Good question. Thank you.
Good, interesting interview, comments on fish farming and effluent dumping spot on, politicians have abrogated their responsibilities and are a disgrace
I remember a gillie telling me of a lady who used to somehow tie her fly straight to the main line and still caught fish, since then I've been less bothered about what I use. Having said that, I still carry both clear and brown Maxima and use whichever feels right on the day.
I’ve heard stories like that too, had an acquaintance recently starting in fly fishing and he didn’t know you had to put a leader on so he just tied the fly to the line (idk how he managed to pass the line through the eye of the hook), and he still managed to catch fish, but I’ve also experienced rivers where if I don’t use a 15ft leader I’m not going to catch anything, I guess every inch of the river is different in all aspects 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t think that salmon are very leader shy, but since swapping from brown maxima to a long fluorocarbon one I’ve caught a lot more day time seatrout
No, Id say your 100% right. However, some would disagree and who’s to say whats right and wrong. As long as it works for you thats the main thing. I think one thing is sure, its good to use stealth when fishing for wild fish. Long leaders are generally a good thing. The only time I tend to go short is when im fishing sinking line.
@@IanGordonsalmonfishing What do you consider long or short here? I tend to use about 6' unless fishing smaller flies in summer and then it's more like 10'.
Hi Ian thank you for sharing. So today I start my journey. Learning about casting a double handed salmon rod. I have a feeling I will be binge watching every video you have made and some video's I will watch a number of times. I will set about purchasing a rod this week. Liked and subscribed. Thanks again Ian 👍
Hi Ian I am new to your channel. I have been fly fishing over 20 years mostly trout or sea trout ,recently even sea bass here in the north of Ireland. This year I am wanting to learn to cast a double handed Salmon rod and so I have enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing. Liked and subscribed too. 👍
Thanks Ian - I think I have misunderstood this move and been doing it wrong for years. I have been lifting the line off the water and sweeping the rod around to the anchor point by dipping my shoulders - rather than change the elevation using the plane of my wrist. I sense it is why I get stuck as I then try to lift the rod upwards and move into the forward stroke. I hope my explanation makes sense. Thanks again - really enjoy watching your video clips.
I was going to ask about using just a 15ft sinking tip, however your friend mentioned it! I’m aware about getting the weight of line and fly up to the surface. Which I then proceed to do the roll cast, the part where you mentioned about not stopping as soon as you have made the roll cast, has just answered a lot of my head scratching 😂 for me! Thanks Ian , another great tutorial video, tight lines
Some very nice fish there. Anytime when I am allowed to watch fishing on TV and the wife is in attendance she always comments that she is waiting for an ugly one to be caught as they are all belters, crackers or nice.
Yep hopefully Ian.. fished D beat 17 March for the 4 days.. I know it’s early but like I say 6 rods per day you would think somebody would have connected with one.. hoping get up later on back end of spring so hopefully few more fish in the system 🎣🤞👍
Aye, if you could get just a week later its always better. That said, sometimes conditions will play into your hand the week before. I remember doing a casting course there that week and having a couple of fish. The luck of the draw, but for sure, over time the last week in March will be better.
Almost all the pools can be fished from the bank although the boat is really handy to follow those big ones when they take off. I'd say we fish from the boat 50% of the time but " "Most" pools can be fished from the bank.
Its one of the most breathtaking places imaginable which is why I wanted to share it in this way and not simply of someone standing playing another big fish. I really is an awe inspiring place and I'm so lucky to ahve had the chance to fish and appreciate it.
Some of the biggest Atlantic Salmon on the planet. It really is the most amazing of places and Im very lucky to have a friend who has taken me here sharing his rod a few times. Extremely privileged.
Would you say that was your No 1 bucket list destination. Mine was North Harris Estates Loch Voshmid and after being lucky enough to fish that amazing loch and a few of their other lochs one of which we had fifty Sea Trout to the boat on a spectacular Saturday. I have ticked that off my list. I would say Patagonia and their famed Sea trout would be next if I won the lottery. I would need a decent Ghillie as my eyesight & hand tremor make it increasingly difficult for tying flies onto leaders. Anyone in mind?@@IanGordonsalmonfishing
What a great interview Ian, enjoyed listening in the workshop this afternoon....better than the radio 🙂 So pleased to have found your channel. All the best.
