I'm sorry, but John Lurie is one of the greatest talents of the present age, and shamefully unacknowledged and underappreciated. Brilliant guy, mad skills in so many areas.
He has fans and the respect of many people in the art and music community. Maybe he is not as popular but I don't think he is underrated. Perhaps underrepresented.

Matt had just finished filming Cameron Crowes' film "Singles" about relationships among Generation X'ers in Seattle. (released in April 1992 & featuring members of Pearl Jam & Soundgarden) This was the "calm before the Grunge hyped storm".

John Lurie originally wanted to use his friend Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea for the episode filmed in Costa Rica instead of actor Matt Dillon. But the Japanese producers that financed the series pressured Lurie into using Dillon because he was a bigger name celebrity. According to the audio commentary on the Criterion DVD, Lurie had only met Dillon once or twice before filming which explains why they are not as talkative with each other as Lurie is with the other guests. （From IMDB）
Loved the series. They anchored from the stern of the boat, which can sink and kill you quickly in a heavy current. No doubt the producers knew nothing about fishing while doing this series.
1:45 This young Japanese woman is Kazu Makino and, according to the end credits and the IMDb, she provided vocals to the soundtrack; she's likely seen also at 1:40. A couple of years later Kazu Makino founded noise rock band Blonde Redhead with Italian twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace. They still record and tour after more than thirty years. I once read a Facebook post by Kazu Makino saying that she met John Lurie in Japan. Judging from the tone of that post I had the feeling that they were in a relationship and he brought her to New York where she later met the Pace brothers. This TV series is produced by a Japanese broadcaster by the way.
I just watched the episode with John and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch last night. Now I’m hooked. No pun intended. I hope those horses lived a good full life
As I recall renting some of these videos a long time ago, unless I missed it, this seems to be an edited version where they leave out that they ate Mushrooms before the magical dance.
“Painting with John,” currently running on HBO... last episode of the hopefully first season airs Friday. Great stuff. Wonderful stories. Amazing paintings.
It's said Lurie'd preferred to have the Chilli Peppers guitarist as a guest, but for some unknown reason the japanese producers insisted for hosting Dillon.
Did you know Flea is not the guitarist you fool it was John Frusciante and he wacked out on the junk badly at this point in time so unfortunately I doubt he would have rocked up if I know smack heads but if he had it would have been genius
