I like x5 and X7 better, they are thinner towards the edge, this one is thicker so it would be more suitable for cracking, but the weight doesn't help it because it is very light. I would have preferred it thinner towards the edge.
It would have been nice to have a x5 or x7 in the video for comparison unfortunately I didn't. I do think the x7 is a better choice than this one for a trekking hatchet. Much more useful and still very light. Thanks for watching mate.
Big fan of fiskers I see. Man I'll tell you what a absolutely love. Council tools. I don't know if it's being an ol country boy or what but I love a good hickory handle. In the woods I've been using the boys axe and the 16 inch flying fox which I absolutely love if I'm walking alot fine for crafting as well. I think you would enjoy them to
I am sure I would love council tools axes, the thing is they are super expensive over here. I too prefer hickory handles, or ash or elm. The good thing about Fiskars is they are cheap and bomb proof. I also have various other axes and hatchets that I use. I like Hultasfors a lot and also some of the older Finnish axes. Thanks for watching mate.
Yep, your into winter now for the next 6 months. I don't have a FISKARS axe, I just never got pass the hollow composite Fiber handle on them. I see lots of makers are using them types of handles now days. I may have to get one at a yard sale next Spring and give it a try.
The hollow fiber comp handles really arnt to people's tastes. But they are bloody tough. They are pretty decent working tools. I just kind of hate that fiskars killed the old Finnish collared axes. Yes it's winter now for the next half a year 😂. Going to be getting dark and cold now.

Knee jerk reaction is to reject 'the plastic axe'. But it s an intriguing idea! Like an axe with a rat tang .. I would have to hold one and take a good look at the profile.
The fibre comp handles are kind of off putting. Fiskars make pretty good working tools. The issue with this one though is it is so light. Normally worth carrying a little more weight I think and having a more effective axe.

I would have thought that you would have hated this😂. I know you like knives more for your hiking trips. This kind of takes the place of a big knife. Obviously you can smash this thing with a batton really hard. It's nice for spoon carving and fatwood processing. I do think I prefer something a bit heavier. The thing is it is so light you don't notice it. But if you have enough things that are so light you don't notice them you notice them😂. Thanks for watching mate.

It seems to work fine for limbing, considering that it weighs about as much as a feather. It's definitely very different. I think maybe the x7 is probably a bit of a better size weight compramise. Thanks for watching Trev.
I quite like the X13... But i also *REALLY* like the X18. The X18 is Fiskars full blown attempt at making a full blown pack axe. I'd have preferred it to be a wee bit longer, but the curved handle makes up for my minor complaints about the length.

I have tried x5 earlier, today x13. And imho ... that x13 is useless on trekking (even lesser than x5, which was at least somehow usable), better to take something like big knife ... But imho x14 is improvement over x7, which is really usefull trekking/camping axe.
The X 14 does look good. Never seen it before, just looked it up. I think the x7 is a compramise of usability vs weight. The X5 I like for spoon carving ect I don't think I have ever taken it trekking. I have with the X13 and it seemed fairly useful at least for me. I do have trekking axes that I prefer, but generally heavier. As for the X13 compared to a large knife. That sounds like a good idea for a video. Thanks for watching the video.
I agree with you on the weight subject! A light axe is great to carry but feels like a contradiction somewhat, as it is then limited by design to the size of wood that can be processed and therefore brings it into the realm of a heavy duty knife or machete. Still a good quality looking tool though! 👍🏻👍🏻😎
It is really well made. Doesn't do much that a Leuku can't though there are however some benefits to the thickness over a large knife, when it comes to splitting and also not getting stuck in the wood while chopping. Thanks for stopping by Andy. Have a fantastic weekend mate.
Reducing the steel and extending the plastic on the bit is a big warning to me. I like the design of the poll on this one over my other Fiskars but it appears they are trying to make a tomahawk here and may have missed the boat.

Great review, if you havent tried out, check out roselli hatchet, its really good splitter, not as good as a carver though. Holy hell are they expensive now, haha
Roselli are getting to be very expensive. This is no doubt due to demand. We have had a Roselli hatchet at work so I have used that one quite a lot. Not so long ago I bought myself one. It was second hand and a good price. I have been lucky with Roselli that way, for a couple of second hand bargains. I like their hatchets, they are rather weird in that they are super thick for something that small. They do seem to punch above their weight. Great for splitting even if they do sometimes bounce. Great for removing branches but pretty bad at carving. Also really excellent at small saddle notch joints due to the curvature. But to be honest that is not something that I do every day. Looking for a small hatchet that would also act as a tent peg hammer. Noticed the "hammer head" feature, which X5 doesn't really have. Would the X5 do that or am I better off waiting for X13 to appear in stores (Australia)?
I have used regular fiskars axes for this in the past with the same shaped poll as the x5 but I think the X13 works a lot better. Probably best to wait or possibly consider something else. The Cold Steel Trail Hawk for example works great as a hammer. It does however come with a seriously dull cutting edge wich requires some work. Thanks for watching mate.

A very nice hatchet, but 480g is a bit too light for my linking. Event my favourite X7, which is 640g, is sometimes too light for me. A hatchet is not a knife, it's meant for heavier work, so it needs to have a certain weight to make tasks like chopping easier.
I really do prefer the x7 and x5 in general. Much better compramise between usability and weight for carrying over distance. A small hatchet is good for certain things (spoon carving springs to mind) but this one is a little light for even that. You really don't notice the weight though, it's better than not having an axe. Hiking for long distance when you probably don't need an axe anyway, then it is worth having.
@@KuukkeliBushcraft A bit expensive indeed both brands. There are better ways to spend that money. Also, 340 gramms is a bit light for a hatchet. I will use my Esee 6 instead, much more versatile.
I had a Fiskars axe.. sadly it was stolen ..lol.. so I never got to use it much !! 😁 Since then I have just used my old wooden helved axes. Great review Tim bro ! .. shame about the missing steel !! ..probably needs Saphire !! 😉(you'll be too young to remember that telly show !! lol)
Saphire? Your right I don't remember that. That is proper old telly was it in black and white? We actually didn't have a telly when I was little. Everyone in class wrote to Jim'l fix it. I thought he fixed broken stuff. Anyway the less said about him the better. Shame your axe got pinched, I kind of like the wooden handled old ones better anyway. Not that I actually think they are better. I just like them more.

I use a Fiskars splittingax that belongs to the owner of the house. It is a good ax but I don't like these modern things. My own Gränfors splittingax and Gränfors hunting ax look much better. When the handle breaks down I can buy a new one in the red house shop.
The Fiskars splitting axes work really great, we have a couple at work (you probably saw on the video). I don't really worry about breaking those fibre comp handles, they are bloody tough. For a lightweight trekking axe the Gransfors Brucks outdoor axe is probably about as good as you can get. I think most of us prefer the more traditional axes and the fact of the matter is there are far better axes than fiskars. But for a good value working tool they are pretty good. When it comes to this particular model it is maybe a little too light. I actually think I prefer my Cold steel trail hawk even if it isn't much heavier. The outdoor axe would be a much better option I believe, but very much more money. Thanks for watching mate.
They should have made it in way the steel goes all the way around, and maybe even little bit to the handle kinda like tang. Well i prefer axes, and hatchets with proper eye anyways
Plenty of room for some metal in that hollow tang. Obviously though the selling point is that it weighs so little. I think it would be better if it did weigh a little more. i dont like it i think it would pick the x7 instead something about splitting the axe head in half bothers me,if i wanted superlightweight i would just go with a cold steel trail hawk that weighs nothing,the only user i can see for it is for people with custom expensive knives they dont want to baton,but the x5 can baton and would be more solid...maybe for ultralight hikers? its just weird not sure who the target is...old fishermen with a bad back? ultra light bugout bag? older hunters? for splitting up elk maybe? i dont know...the head on the x5 and x7 is secure because it gets locked in from both front and end..this design its only locked in one way...
I think the x7 is a better compramise between weight and usability. It is quite effective at breaking up fatwood stumps (my Cold steel trail hawk is better at that). I think it is aimed at people who are walking long distances and prioratize other things than cutting tools when it comes to weight. The attachment to the cover seems pretty secure. As for the strength of the head I guess it should be OK, not 100 per cent convinced. I hae certainly come across much worse trekking hatchets. It's just about where you draw the line between weight and usability. The one long hike I did with it it did come in quite handy. To be honest I didn't particularly need an axe. At that weight it didn't bother me to have one either.
