Uranium-238 is fissionable but not fissile meaning it can't sustain a chain reaction but can be induced to fission. Uranium-235 is fissile and is the fuel required for a nuclear power station to work.
Ohhh get a life. Energy isn't a physical thing, only a concept. To say that "kinetic energy is made" is no less correct than saying "an object's kinetic energy increases". The only thing that matters is how it related to the values.

Why use water that has a boiling point of 100C when you can use ethanol with a lower bp. Wouldn't that save more energy?? (I know alcohol is flammable.)
If mass of fissionable material falls below critical mass chain reaction cannot be sustained (critical mass is minimum mass of fissionable material required to start and sustain a chain reaction)
I guess you don't care anymore but for anyone else reading this... The other reason for fuel rods still containing uranium being 'used up' is that the fission products produced can be good neutron absorbers themselves and this reduces the number of neutrons available for fission. Chemically removing them can make the fuel viable again. It is processes like this that are referred to as fuel reprocessing. An analogy for this might be the 'poisoning' of a catalyst in chemistry.
