Flying Warriors is definitely one of those games that I haven't seen covered much by retro reviewers, so I really appreciate this review! I feel lucky to have memories with this one when I compare notes with other kids from the time who didn't bump in to this obscure game. I bought it late in the NES lifecycle for $20 at Toys”R”Us when having enough money to buy a game was a big deal, and most were still expensive, so you know I was playing it to completion, haha! I loved the one-on-one fighting and superhero transformations, which always made me hyped for battle, but also appreciated the overall aesthetic and RPG battles. The tournament mode was another cool addition that spoke to my pro wrestling fandom, even if it was limited. There's at least two songs, one of which you played early in the video, that desperately need a rock cover! I'm glad to have more folks know about a game that I felt I was one of the few that was aware of...just remember that I was there before it was cool, lol! P.S. Don't forget the Ultimate Fighter sequel on the SNES!

I wasn't aware that Flying Dragon on N64 (which I own) was part of a series of Famicom /NES games. The fact that none of those was released here in Europe certainly didn't help

Same! For the longest time. But that goes for metal gear solid in PlayStation 🤷🏻‍♂️🤯

This is one of those series I'm always surprised how vast it is. Flying Warriors is interesting for being a hybrid of Japanese games from a mostly Japan-only series that never came out in Japan. It kinda reminds me of Robotech

I also dig the Super Nintendo entry: Ultimate Fighter. It’s ostensibly more of the same, but the character sprites are HUGE and the tokusatsu-esque one on one fights are goofy fun.

I bought Ultimate Fighter for the SNES when I was young & still enjoy playing it occasionally. It plays similar to Flying Warriors but without the platforming. You still have the fights with the Mind's Eye system, with straightforward beat em up segments in between. All of these games are pretty ambitious but brought down by the clunky gameplay.

I played so much flying dragon as a kid. It’s not the best NES game out there but was fairly unique. The standout feature was always the fighting; Travis highlighted it pretty well. I imagine they could have used the same fighting mechanics to make a matrix-style martial arts game today and it would be pretty good.

Who does Rick Stalker stalk? Why does Rick Stalker stalk? Gotta love the low budget super heroes box art look for Flying Warriors. There was also Fighting Simulator 2 in 1 Flying Warriors for the Gameboy. Also called Kiryu no Ken Gaiden.

I saw the names and never played these, assuming they were just vertical scrolling shmups. Now that my assumptions have been proven wrong, I kinda want to track them down. This series actually looks really fun, and I LOVE Culture Brain games.

Great review! Growing up, i played both games. I heard you mentioned you only get the true ending for Flying Warriors if you finish it in expert mode, but I don't see a difference. Am I missing something?

What a fascinating series you've found, NES Friend. I'll have to give these games a try some time. The first FC/NES game is actually the second in the series, with the original game being the 1985 arcade hit "Shanghai Kid" (aka 北派少林 飛龍の拳 or romanized as "Hokuha Shyourin - Hiryuu no Ken", meaning "North Faction Shaolin - Fist of the Flying Dragon") ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A42vs5pKuT0.html While searching for the Japanese titles I was only able to find a pdf copy of the first Famicom game manual, but I did find a few sites that featured hand-typed instructions for the second and third Famicom games. The adventurous can copy the following text along with the Japanese title of a game to attempt to search for manuals (or at least second-hand explanations): ファミコン 説明書 (Famicom instruction manuals) Hmmm... I was thinking how "SNES Drunk" sometimes uses the "SEGA Drunk" moniker when reviewing SEGA games, but I have the feeling people would get the wrong impression if you switched to "FC Friend" when reviewing Famicom games...
