Thank you for this! Would love more videos on fitting tack correctly. Anything from halter to saddle to boots. Showing everything when it has the wrong fit and why would also be great to have in a video😇
I recently had my eventer fitted for a dressage and jumping bit with Tara. She was amazing to work with and we all learned a lot. We found 2 new bits that my horse went very well in. Really happy with the experience and glad I signed up for it. As mentioned in this video, I am one of the guilty ones who had the wrong sized bit on my horse and had it adjusted too loose 😅
When I was getting certified as an instructor, I was taught that two finger widths should fit between the bridge of the nose and the cavesson or noseband. This is FEI regulation I believe, page 9 of the FEI eventing guidelines.
This was really good! For me what I enjoyed was learning the physiology between the horse and the bridle fit. I intend to watch this video again when tacking up to compare what my setup is. THANK YOU!
Thank you for sharing this. I had not realized the TMJ affect on bridle fit. It also made me check my horses' halter fit. I keep halters on during turn out, and that means 12 hrs a day. Never really considered their fit beyond not too loose/ tight, and I have owned horses 40+ years!
Fantastic, thankyou that was so informative and i took a few things away to check on my horse and I am happy to say that a few things I think i'm doing wright :)
thanks Amelia this was unbeleivably helfull been riding all my life never knew this AT ALL! I HAVE MADE SOME RATHER EXPENSIVE ADJUSTMENTS BUT WOW what a differnce those changes made, i hope my mare feels so much better from these changes
Yes I too was curious as to her opinion on how tight the noseband and the flash should be. And what is the purpose of the flash. With 3 different dressage trainers I hear 3 very different things :). Ahhh, horses!
Please do tell what your 3 trainers say, I'm very interested! Basic line for me is the horse LOOKS comfortable and happy in it's demeanour and should be able to open it's mouth and move the tongue. If it has to strapped shut then there is something terribly wrong with either the bit/and/or the rider. My own mare happily reaches for the bit when putting bridle on and we do not use a flash. Sadly I see some riders with flash so tight the poor horse can barely breathe! And we have the Blue Tongue scenario too. Sorry to go on!
This was super helpful! I always kind of worried that my browband was too tight on my mare and bought the next size up which is way too big. M I’m going to try an old schooling bridle I have just to see if it sits clear of the bones better. Never thought about the buckles before!
Great question. You want to make sure that your horse can move their jaw and chew like they can with their bridle off. You can test by giving your horse a cookie with their bridle on. About 2 stacked fingers is usually a good place to start.
Fabulous content, thankyou. For giving physiological rationale to all the important aspects, was invaluable. I'll be assessing closely next time I'm bridling! ❤
