Thank you for promoting controlled light sparring. I say that as someone that was almost knocked out my 1st time sparring. Learned a lot more doing tap sparring with experienced amateurs than I did from people beating me up.

100% those early spars are where most damage can be picked up If a much more experienced boxer is just using the new person as fodder

great insight to boxing sparring and the different between sparring and actual fights. Many clubs dont understand sparring and its just warfare. trust me lol.

Yes as a trainer it’s great to get in there with the boxers and correct faults but there would be little point in me just smashing them to bits I’m training them to be better it’s not about boosting my ego it’s about improving their boxing I dont really throw full bloodied shots you can still have effective shots just hitting them in the right places I absolutely love sparring

@@Fit2Box brother I’ll be honest with you. You have technical ability but your an older guy. Any young man in his prime with a year of training would get you out of there pretty quick. Don’t act like your some prime Mike Tyson who’s holding back to save lives.

Please can you advise. My last head guard had suede on the inside which absorbed sweat and had more friction from the material, this made it look less tidy from sweat stains over the 17years I’ve had it, but it never moved around whilst sparring. I recently bought a new head guard which is leather on the inside. Felt a good fit, as soon as I started sweating, the none absorbing leather meant the head guard became slippy on the inside, no matter how tight I adjusted it. The slightest jab would make it slide around. How can this be avoided without going back to a suede like material on the inside?
@Fit2Box
@Fit2Box 2 года назад
Well if you have had a headguard for 17 years I would seriously consider getting the same model My leather ones don’t slip but suede does have more of a gripping effect although as you rightly say the sweat stains do build up As long as the headguard is correctly fastened in all areas then slipping should be minimal You may have to readjust every so often to maintain the correct size

If you were only able to use one face bar headgear and one cheek protector headgear, which would they be? I like the details in your comparison videos. I used to have the big gray Rival facebar, looking to get something much lighter. Never tried on any others of quality

Damn Simon you move great still! 1. I can see your a good coach as you intentionally try to give your guy's chances to hit you, or let them take advantage of a pattern you're doing on purpose, etc. I would love to have a coach like this, no ego involved. 2. you also change up your guard and show different looks which is essential. I think every boxer should be able to use two guards. 3. The tall kid around 16 minutes was very hesitant and you urged him on to come forward, thats great! As he gets better Im sure you'll start telling him to go to your left and your right. I agree we cant always hard spar. But what I notice a-lot from people that only light spar, such as this, is they tend to "admire" their punches instead of bringing them back - especially the cross. It comes out and then drops as it comes back for most beginners trying to light spar. It's very hard to control the punch and bring it back for beginners. So they end up leaving openings or developing habits that are hard to break. You on the other hand are still bringing your punches back. So maybe theres a way beginners can light spar but still try to bring those punches back asap. Do you have any advice on that? Maybe just keep the hand open and throw fast but not hard. Its kind of an oxymoron but if youve sparred you understand. I tend to only have a problem in light sparring when someone runs into my punch as theres not much you can do, but if i see an opening I throw and basically hit them in the shoulder or chest sometimes instead so I dont develop that bad habit. Plus if there real green theirs no point in starching them it will only make them not want to go with you etc. Thats my only critique otherwise this just shows me I can trust your reviews that much more! have a great week!

Thankyou I appreciate the comments Well I’m quite happy for the boxers to go harder with their power if they get the technique right I don’t need to go big power to match theirs ( you can really see this in the spar against the lady boxer) My defence is there so hopefully I will block most For me this type of sparring prepares them for harder spars which everyone does need I’m trying to improve my boxers I don’t give them free shots (my head is valuable too) so if they land they have either done well or I have made a mistake Which happens no one is perfect Especially in the ever changing situation of a spar As you can see in the video if I hit 70% power it’s still enough Me hitting 100% power is just damaging and discouraging my boxers Totally pointless as they are building there confidence to fight not me A trainer should be wanting there boxers to be way better than they were Otherwise the trainers ego is blocking their progress I love sparring always have And my defence means I don’t take that many But even I am aware of the fact I’ve been doing this many years I still feel good and enjoy it so for now I will carry on sparring Thanks again for taking the time to comment

@@Fit2Box yea I’m just speaking on light sparring in general. I agree there’s no reason to hit 100% as it would discourage them Usually the higher the caliber of fighter, the more hard sparring is going to take place. For instance professionals need some hard sparring for timing and getting ready for a specific style, but their defense is so good plus their wearing gloves twice the size of their actual fight glove. But for someone learning and building confidence this is not the best. Often times emotions get the best of beginners, forget to breathe, lack defensive responsibility, etc. So it makes more sense to turn the intensity down until they can safely defend themselves at more of an intermediate level and block, slip, parry etc through force of habit or second nature. I personally watch more defense than offense, I love watching videos of Pernel Whittaker and guys that mastered defense. However most boxing gyms I’ve been too I’d say defense was usually 1/4 of the training when I think it should be worked as much as offense. You have great defense. I think you misunderstood - my fault, I said I admired where you would show someone an opening while sparring but then block it so they can be more aware the next time. I didn’t mean carelessly letting them hit you lol although that may build their confidence too haha I don’t think it would be very healthy
@Fit2Box
@Fit2Box 2 года назад
@@bobbyCruiser I think like you defence is the key to boxing Too often neglected I don’t like getting punched so I worked on my defence loads Trouble is some people don’t mind getting punched so neglect defence but that will catch up on them down the line Great comment 🙌🏼👍🏼

@@lapincheriatota punished? What if they are a month in? We don’t have any context. I was making a general point. I’ve used this channel for all my decisions to buy gloves, Simon has incredible attention to detail. My point was not about this sparring session, it’s about light sparring as a whole. People tend to make defensive errors at light sparring but at least they get used to movement and timing they won’t get on a bag. Don’t punch down shit ain’t cool

Hi Simon. Thanks for the great video. Controlled and sometimes light sparring is the way to go. I've sparred and still spar with females. I'm currently sparring with a female that just started boxing training back last spring. The first time we got in the ring and sparred, she told me afterwards that that was the first time she had ever thrown a punch at another person!
