There is a lot of stories about fitting a Ford 4000 starter on the hard to start FE35 4 cylinder diesel engine. In this video I have a look and see if it is worth it.
Hello, I'm Lance (aka Bundy Bear), and doing these videos is my hobby. I do own Queensland Tractor Spares in Australia where I sell parts and offer technical advice to customers.
Parts seen in our videos can be purchased from www.queenslandt...
We have a lot more than we can offer on our web site available to us and in our store. If you don't see what you would like please email info@queenslandtractorspares.com.au or call 1300 850 097 and we will help where we can.
I do try and help with technical advice at bundybearsshed@gmail.com if you have a question or are having trouble with your project.

There's a whole list of things you can do to the 23C to make it start better. I think each one adds about 10%, it all adds up in the end! The best advice I got was just park it at the top of a hill 😉.

I was told once from a MF mechanic that did his time on FE35, when they were new. They would remove the thermostart plug from the manifold. Attach the wire and fuel pipe. Turn the key to heat position and Count how long it takes to burn the diesel. Each thermostart will burn at different times. Reinstall the thermostart and Count down the seconds to when it starts burning, then engage the starter. They found that people woulding used the thermostart for too long before trying starting. This would used up all the oxygen in the manifold and when it came to starting, only smoke would be drawn into the engine. He said it worked well

Lance I cut my eye teeth on one of these in country that would freeze up the hot water system in the house quite regular during winter and we ran 2 6 volt batteries and made sure the heaters on the fuel worked properly..They still gave problems but the tractor itself which was bought in 1958 never gave problems--they were mighty--did 10-12 thousand hours did not touch the motor or running gear except the thrust bearing on the clutch--square balers were a mongrel...

I think they are a nice old engine and do run sweet, I think a lot of starters are ruined from cranking for so long and getting hot.

Thanks for the video, I have an FE 35 that has just done a fair harvest powering and moving around a field bin. On our last dayI think the starter motor has packed up ; your video is a good starting point for our diagnosis and repair.

We rebuilt a 4 cylinder, with a full rebuild kit, some years ago and once the tractor was finished, with a little bit of heat it would start fine on a Scottish winters day. That said, I'd be tempted to fit the ford starter if we were to do it again, as we normally send starter for a recondition anyway.. The big plus for me for a 4 cylinder is that they are cheaper given that folks want an easy starting 3 cylinder. As long as it has good compression, the fuel squirts at the right time and a bit of heat, she is going to start. Those photo RPM counters are great. I set up my pals tandem engined Dexta using one to get the Revs matching....having the right tools makes the job easy

This is good to know - We have just bought a 1959 4 Cyl - when we went to view it was 4C/40F and it started after on the second attempt after winding over for about 10s on the first attempt. Having looked it over, the heater plug is disconnected, so I hope this may make a difference, once its is working....

I’ve got a French MF30. A 4 cylinder Perkins engine. A bugger to start cold. I let the water out of the motor and pour in some hot water until I feel the warm water coming through. Starts first pop. This tractor has a fair amount of ware in it.

Hello mate , in winter here the off - road blokes use these kenlowe cooling system heaters , you plumb them in & leave them , just plug them into mains electricity ( I,d use a timer ) , heat the coolant up & it should start . Just check you can still get them , that the Kenlowe company didn,t get shut ! ( I,m in bloody england , driven by money , sickening ) same company used to make electrically controlled thermostatic engine fans , these stop a cold blast hitting your engine when you really don,t need it . Best regs.

I see a David Brown one may fit straight on as well, without drilling Im thinking. This tractor started well with the Ford starter but it wasnt too bad with the original either.

A lot of guys in sweden have rhe "cold Climate" head, which has four glow plugs rated at 1,7v each, series coupled (one out, all out lol) and these were a bit daft. they have an M14 thread, which makes finding 12 glow plugs a little difficult. But Land rover used this engine in early series landrovers, and they had good quality glow plugs rated at something over 11v, and they're called GAM 100 or 101. I fitted these, removed the ballast resistor, and have had absolutely no problem starting my 23c in very cold conditions...Minus 20c.@@BundyBearsShed

@iainmel1
@iainmel1 8 месяцев назад
Getting the head drilled in each cylinder is not a difficult or expensive undertaking, so if you ever have the head off, get it done! My fe35 starts on the button even in the middle of the Swedish winter, at least down to -20deg. celcius. I use my tractor mainly for snow clearance and it never fails to start easily. If you do fit glowplugs, use a common car plug, so theyre cheap and easy to get. The Originals fitted were 1.7v each, fitted in series, so they were prone to burning out, and if one was out, then none of them worked! The Original glow plugs had a thread size of M14, and there is only one plug Ive found with that size..... used in the same engine on early series Land Rovers. Theyre not cheap, or easy to find....
@tridbant

@@iainmel1 I’ve heard about that modification. But also you have to be very careful as there is not a lot of space to drill into. Also I have a Perkins FE35 so do not have that problem. Thank goodness.

Hiya lance. I have just rebuilt a 23c engine on a 35. With a brand new battery and spotless diesel it runs well. However, upon starting it is very slow winding, but when we jump it off a pickup truck with some revs, it turns over quicker and starts up no bother. Will this starter motor you show here solve that? Also, where else can I get this starter motor, I don’t have a trade account with sparex so I can’t order off there i don’t think? Thanks in advance mate

How old was the original starter, myself when I was young …..I started my days much quicker. 10% with new bushes/bearings, seems very minor. maybe that Ford Starter is actually weaker?

The original statrer had been serviced in town here so Im presuming it would be around normal. The Ford starter is new off the shelf but an aftermarket one but they seem to work well on the Fords so Im presuming everything is ok.

Hi bundy, I was hoping for a little help, I have a mf35 with 23c engine and just undertook a rebuild on it, your videos on tearing it down were invaluable through the process, so thanks. I had a question about the protective caps on top of valves. I ordered these from dealer here in Scotland but they sent me a pack of 4, and said the caps should only go on top of the exhaust valves before setting clearances. Is this correct ? I thought it was strange that the caps would only go on exhaust and not inlet valves ?

I think they are correct, have a look at Kevs vintage tractor restorations he has a video on them as well.
