Fitting a Heads Up Display (HUD) and Hardwiring a Dash Cam in Ducato based campervan

In this episode, I install a Heads Up Display (HUD) and a Garmin Dashcam in our Elddis CV20 Fiat Ducato based campervan. This is fairly generic for any Ducato van, campervan or motorhome.
Firstly, I install the heads up display and then the parking mode cable or hard wiring kit for the dashcam with some fuse taps.

If you decide to do this yourself, this video is just a guide on how I have gone about it to suit my specific purposes and may not be the best way of going about it. Any mods you undertake you need to personally assess the risk before going ahead and whether it’s needed or right for you.

Nice update David, I still have the HUD to install and like you got it before we had the van. Also ike you, fitted a dashcam (another brand) but they all basically do the same thing.

Thanks Tim - slowly getting through the jobs - definitely made a difference - the HUD was very easy to install which was great the dash cam took longer because of the need to make up the connections. Appreciate the comment - thank you - David 👍

You don’t need to remove the big panel under the steering wheel. Just remove the fuse box cover and there’s plenty of room to feed the cable through.

Hi are there any instances of a connected HUD display causing a problem with the ECU as my Ducato has been remapped cheers

Hi Carl, I’ve not had any problems with it but there’s always a chance if for example the device played up or the CAN bus wiring shorted or connected to the ground or supply could certainly cause issues - again though I’ve had no problems with this particular one to date and it’s been really helpful to keep an eye on the speed whilst keeping an eye on the road. We have a Kenwood DVR 301 dashcam fitted to our Mini Countryman that is wired to a permanent live in the fuse box for the parking sensor setting to used, never had a problem with battery drain, It turns off after a few minutes anyway and the current draw is minute. Only thing i don't like is that everytime you open and close a door it sets it off recording and self protects file, so every few days you have to reformat the SD card to erase all the recordings. As for the Heads up display David, how did you fit it to the dash, and does it work ?? Another video maybe :-)

Great work..pity I only wanted the hud and not sure how you wired that in , it sounded like the dash cam wiring explained but not hud or am I missing something? Cheers

It’s really easy install for the HUD - it comes with a OBD connector which plugs into the port where the fuse box is in the Ducato (or similar) and the wire will route through no problem - I think I did another video which showed that - will check, really easy install though nothing fiddly with it 👍 all the best, David

Hi David I am not very confident re electric things but I will buy as in France it's so hard to keep looking down at dash so many speed adjustments in towns .. I want to connect without using the usb port and wires trailing. Will give it a go and look for your other helpful video thanks

How is the HUD performing after all this time ? would you still recommend it ?

It’s working well still, I was just saying to Rachel last weekend that it’s really helped given my height to keep an eye on your speed without being distracted looking right down. I would defiantly recommend - only wish would have been that it was powered off when ignition was off but I get why it doesn’t do that due to connecting into OBD port but as a driving aid, excellent. Hi David I was surprised when I was fitting the head up display to my van, that the OBDC port is permanently live. The unit has a pretty flimsy on/off switch. Are you intending leaving unit permanently fitted and switching on and off with this switch?

Hi Robert, thanks for the comment - it seems to go onto sleep mode so I haven’t been switching it off - I will check it tomorrow and see how much power it consumes - I did wonder also but so many had fitted them I thought it just be fine - let me have a look in more detail - thanks again - David 👍

@@LeisureBit Hi David, that would be really useful info. My van is kept in storage yard, and with alarm and tracker fitted I am finding that the vehicle battery is struggling to stay charged. I have just fitted a Van Bitz Battery Master, and removed the HUD until I’ve seen if this new kit helps. Look forward to an update. Thanks.

I’ve managed to measure roughly by pulling a fuse and measuring with it plugged in and unplugged. Once the display has gone off the consumption seems to drop to around 30mA but then after a minute or two it dropped to about 5mA but periodically peaked. I’m not 100% as maybe other things on the circuit. I am looking a bit further to work out how to turn it off completely with ignition off automatically as whilst looks low current draw, none would be better - hope that helps

Hi David Thanks for update. I really appreciate the time you are spending with this. Like you, I would prefer no battery draw when not in use. There is the on/off switch, which is a bit flimsy, difficult to access, and something else you have to remember to switch off.

Not that helpful, I thought you would show how to connect the HUD. The camera work on the Garmin was not too clear and what are fuse taps? A complete novice like me will have no idea what or how it’s done.

Thanks for the comment. It’s not the best video that one is it. I had planned to follow up and was tentative with the dash cam. As it happens I’ve just bought a replacement dashcam. Will redo the HUD when I get chance and cover the new dashcam and reason for change separately. All the best, David 👍
