5MV-20 - Fitting a Tight Tyre - without tyre levers
--------------------------------------
In this video, I show you a 'trick' that will help you fit a tight tyre (tire) on to a wheel rim when the fit is very tight. The trick will allow you to avoid using tyre levers and hence avoid the potential for puncturing your inner tube by trapping it between the tyre and rim or tyre and lever.
====================
About the 5MV channel
--------------------------------------
My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will last no longer than five minutes, many will be much shorter. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.
I am new to posting videos on RU-vid (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.
There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

I rarely make comments, but this time I felt compelled to. This tip is one of the most useful time-saving, stress-reducing, finger-saving, swear-eliminating tire seating tricks I have ever encountered. Worked in seconds bare foot. Bravo, Terry!

I looked at all the tips to fit a tyre on many sites including GCN, but I still couldn't fit my new Continental Gator Hardshells. I resisted the temptation to use tyre levers as there is a good chance of puncturing your tube if you do. Luckily I stumbled across your site and the tip to use your shoes to force the tyre on did the job. Thanks Terry. I'm going to subscribe now.

@FiveMinuteVelo
@FiveMinuteVelo Год назад
You are correct in raising this issue. That and a few other variables can affect how well the technique works. However, generally I find a hard surface is better. Another detail that I didn't really go into was the type of footwear. I usually use flatfish SPD touring shoes; however, recent experience with race type shoes (Shimano RX8) has been, well let's say, a little more frustrating.

Are you able to get enough contact on the tire with road bike shoes and cleats as you are with the shoes you are wearing in your video? I'm concerned that only making contact with one tip on the side of the cleat might not be enough. Changing tires on my Reynolds Strikes is a nightmare so I'm hoping your technique will be a game-changer. Thanks for the great idea.

Tried every tip on you tube, used so many varied lubricants and now. Thrown wheel across road into bush and giving up .who the f made changing a Raleigh racer inner tube such an impossible task for average Jo bike rider..cone back my og Raleigh racer..when you lasted longer and everything was so much simpler..probably.the same twat that made fixing and refitting any new mountain bike complicated gear problems and fitting,attempting to fit a new chain onto. How is it that a car is now so much easier to fix and maintain that a simple bycycle..and I'm a girl! I took my old mini engine apart cleaned and reassembled in less time than the hours I've spent trying to figure out the complexities of gear cogs and rearranging and changing a simple inner tube . ..jokes!

I'm not sure what to say other to say that I have also been there. I'm not sure if you have a question but my advice is to get a belt-drive single speed with solid tyres - not very helpful advice but it is the best I can do. However, I tend to look at these issues as a challenge rather than a problem. Although I must admit, 'challenges' by the road side are not always welcome.

I haven't used this technique for tyres that are run tubeless. I have used this with Schwalbe Pro Ones which are both tubeless and very tight fitting; however I was using tubes. @FiveMinuteVelo
@FiveMinuteVelo Год назад
Yes you are correct, the tyre I used in the demo was not super tight. It was what I had for the demo. I have however had very tight tyres, one so tight I put on with the method I showed but when I punctured I had to resort to cutting the tyre off the rim. You point to Schwalbe tyres, they do seem to cause more trouble than some other brands. However the rim and rim profile are also factors that need to be taken into account. Regards Terry

This is real easy to do without a tube in it guy BUT....I think the whole reason you would have to change the tire on the first place would be to ummmmm, idk...MAYBE TO REPLACE THE TUBE IN IT!!! try doing this with a tube in it and I'll be impressed (kind of) until then quit putting out videos where your just taking shortcuts. For all the amateur or beginner bike riders out there, please use levers or find another video,...this guy is only going to teach you shortcuts instead of the proper way. Now that being said, shortcuts are indeed awesome, however you need to learn the correct way first and then you can develop your own shortcuts that suits your strengths or abilities. Thanks
@FiveMinuteVelo
@FiveMinuteVelo 2 года назад
Dear Jeremy, I'm sorry that my video doesn't meet your standards. However thank you for your constructive feedback. I will try to do better in the future. As for the technique I demonstrated, I assure you that I have used it many times with tyres with tubes in them. I see that leaving the tubes out for the demonstration was not my best decision. As for the proper way to install a tyre, I'm not sure there is one. I do know however, that using tyre levers to install a tyre is not recommended; this is because you can pinch the tube between the tyre lever and the rim or tyre which can result in puncturing the tube. I know this to be true because I have done this in the past. Overall I would recommend putting the tire on just using your hands, even then you need to make sure that the tube doesn't get trapped. I suggest the technique I demonstrated only for those very hard to fit tyres. I should have emphasised this in the video. Regards Terry
