We'll look at some different ways to take a hard puck of shaving soap and make it work in a container that is larger than the puck.

Nice shaving soap for the nice shaving mug

First 😃 Nice video; informative and relaxing to watch. Cutting that curl of soap from the bottom is clever.

Another practical video with plenty of alternative options. Mitchell's probably won't fit as well in that '50s OldSpice mug in your video. It will though fit better in an OSpice mug from the '70s & '80s. But even in those later mugs, Mitchell's won't touch the bottom of the mug. I positively know that for I have tried it. Don't get me wrong, Mitchell's will be contained inside the OSpice mug but no contact with the bottom without tampering with the Mitchell's soap. The Fine pucks, as you comment in your video, one could say they have almost been made to fit v. well inside OSpice mugs. Cheerio!

Thanks man. Yeah I have seen some of those old mugs with concave bottoms. Fine Acc. pucks would have a problem with them too. I guess you could put some shreds down there first to level off the bottom. One idea is to shave around the sides with a vegetable peeler (which I've done on an SV soap puck) and maybe that will reduce its diameter enough to go all the way down. Cheerio, K!

if you don't have a vice , simple cut the puck in small pieces and then put the soap in the bowl, so simple it is

yep. But a hard soap like this, I think shredding is best, because this soap would resist being pressed if the chunks were too large.

@@sgrdddyshaves correct , if the soap is very hard a vice will not transfor the shape of the puck, in that case shredding is maybe the only way ,and it works , since that is what i do with my fine shave soap pucks ( fine from holland )

when de soap is not very hard I put the soap in a vice and make the diameter bigger between two píeces of wood, in case the puck is very hard , I warm up the puck in my microoven , and then press it to the correct diameter in my vice, now if the diameter must be smaller , well then with a knife I cut of what is not needed and put it again on top of the puck

The vice idea is creative and I'll bet perfect for some soaps!

Has anyone used tallow to fill in around the puck?

I don't think that would actually work. I've read a few conversations that soap makers have put out and I think that you have to cook the Tallow along with something like lye to make the Tallow become a soap.

With repeated use, the puck will expand back out. You can also take shavings off of the top of the puck and shove them down around the sides if you really want to fix the problem in the short-term.

I render beef and lamb suet that a friend uses to make shaving soap with. The rendered tallow is run through a coffee filter to remove as much of the non oil residuals as possible. It is then poured into a ceramic baking dish to cool down. The rendering process takes place between 100-120 celsius. I melt the hardened tallow and finished soap in a double boiler at 100 celsius. My soap lady says this is fine and will not harm any of the components of the soap making process. Thanks for posting several passive options.
