Great job James, Coming together very nicely Many staircase companies now use that new method of construction because of modern glues as your stair guy did, nothing wrong with it. Roger PVA is fine for stairs there’s no worries of brittleness it just down to the guy who fitted the stairs. Most issues come from bad prices on big sites i personally think all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

Nice to see someone taking the time to work out equal spacing, The amount of people who use Burbridge pre cut infills and have an uneven gap at one end really grates me! But I can't agree with your views on wedges v polyurethane glue and screws. Polyurethane glue is an aerated product, in time it will compress and the screws will break or squeak. Would you only use expanding foam under a door cill without packings? If you have to rely on screws and PU glue, wouldn't it be better to screw from the top holding down to a solid base? (Plus the fact that wedges in staircase factories are cut from waste material, saving money and reducing waste.) Wedges are a time proven method. Now let's look at draw boring towels and glue blocks.....

Hello Roger I see a comment on here why would you house the handrail in. Well you might because if the newel shrinks in it's with which timber does shrink more in it's with than length you won't see a gap also some times strings are housed into the newel also. Everyone has their ways of working the journey make take a different route but if you end up at the destination it's a gooden. Well done James😊👍🍷

@ilijadjujic5911
@ilijadjujic5911 3 года назад
I haven't got a problem with there being no wedges as I agree that the polyurethane glues really hold well but I've got to say whenever I come across a creaking staircase pretty much all of the time the creak is where the tread and riser meet roughly around the middle of the tread. This is usually caused by the glue breaking away from the riser on the glue block. To get over this I cut a new riser out of 6mm ply really tight to the top of one tread and the bottom of the other over the full width of the original riser then glue and screw it to the original riser and this stops the creaks. If the issue was with the wedge then this wouldn't stop it

@@SkillBuilder Hi Roger, When you say James bridge the gap by sitting the second layer of plasterboard onto the string, won't this just leave a crack as well?
@Feeney20091
@Feeney20091 3 года назад
Rake out the crack using a Scraper or decorators 5 in 1 multi tool. Lightly spray the crack with water and apply expanding foam down into the gap all the way along it. Once dry, take off the excess foam and using the corner of your Scraper or folded sandpaper, score or sand a v into the foam. Stabilise the repair with a very diluted mix of pva and water. Once dry, apply a neat bead of powdered filler with your finger, sand nice and smooth when dry. Stabilise once more and then paint. The importance of using foam and not just caulk is that you have to stop the movement between the wall and the timber and foam will help with this. If something moves, it will crack. Simples. Hope this helps. Stay safe everyone.

All the spindles will move up and down side to side forwards backwards as the heating kicks in everything will shrink and no glue makes the problem 10 times worse, those 18 gauge nails fired into the spacers and spindles without glue will become pointless in a few months.
