Its quite ok to change your mind. I changed my mind too! My reasons for going for RR would be the strength of mounting points and the fact you can jack the bike up using a scissor stand underneath the belly plate and it would take the weight of the bike no problem. Therefore you don't really need a centre stand. Thanks for the heads up. Hope you get it sorted.

Difficult to say what’s best, all down to road v trail use and light trail v heavy trail. I’m really happy with the RR guard I eventually fitted and it’s been thumped a few times now 😆

Hello, so it wasn't just me then, I knew I was getting some vibration resonance also. I even asked SW Motech if they've had reports of that, they said no last year. I removed mine for the same reason. If you made a Rally Raid video of the install, I'll check that out

It was doing my head in Wayne 😂 I’ve also seen some videos of the SW one being used in the US where the the whole guard was pushed back in a cantilever way and this is because it hangs from all four connection points ! Yes, there’s a RR fitting video..can link here: Rally Raid Engine Guard fitting to Honda CB500X ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9NDX-WDAq1Y.html

Buyers remorse! I went back and forth between this and the RR. I ended up going for the SW motech guard which I fitted without too much difficulty. HOWEVER, the resonance problem is a big negative, you mentioned that you had seen some solutions using sound deadening material. First ride out with it fitted today and it drones continually even at idle. it amplifies the sounds of the engine (not in a nice way) and creates a very distracting whining noise. If I can’t stop the noise problem I am going to have to remove it and sell it or drill loads of holes in it! Wish I had listened to your advice. Any suggestions on how to stop the resonance noise gratefully received.

Try some thin rubber matting or dense foam and cut to shape sticking on upper side of guard…old BMWs had similar to this so I guess it should help!

I to didn’t like the look of the sump guard as there was just so much space above it, Would also say the RR guard does give a bit of side protection too. At least you managed to sell them and good on you letting us know right away.

Hi Andy. A quick update. I've now got my 2021 CB500X. It's early days but so far so great. I note that you've taken the SW Mototech skid plate and centre stand off because you weren't happy with the skid plate but what did you reckon to the stand? Cheers Mike

MrDazza64 unfortunately it’s not possible as the RR guard uses the centre stand fixing tube on the bike...I’ve sold them both anyhow, no messing about when my mind is made up 😂 I’ll use a small bike scissor type lift for garage and find a suitable small trail bike stick lift for traveling 👍🏻

Can you say which, RR or Motech has more clearance to the ground? Seems like RR cuts clearance a bit, is Motech better in that regard? I am thinking if it is the best not to have any guard at all, that way there is the most clearance, you won't be hitting things that RR/Motech guard would hit (since they reduce clearance). Only concern is Oil Filter damage from rocks, but to plant it on the ground, that should not happen ever, so to expect the guard to withstand strong hit is too much for this bike...
@thecampingbiker791
@thecampingbiker791 Год назад
There’s not a lot in it, I ultimately removed the Motech and put the RR one on as didn’t really like the way it was fitted on the bike. The Motech had a slight better clearance but if going anywhere with rocks I wouldn’t be comfortable using the Motech as it could easily push backwards and upwards as it is only really hanging from the bike whereas the RR can take a better knock as it is more firmly fixed and very solid. My bike has the level 2 RR suspension which lifted the bike up giving slightly better ground clearance anyhow. My personal view is if using mostly on rocky tracks I’d go for RR but if mostly gravel the Motech would do the job fine. Hope that’s useful 👍🏻
@jutjub22
@jutjub22 Год назад
@@thecampingbiker791 thanks, yes you helped a bit. I will mostly do gravel, I do not like the sound of rocks underneath when going faster :). I am careful not to actually hit the bike from the bottom, so I need guard to deflect stuff mostly, not protection from actual hard hit/planting. I heard your issue with resonant tone with Motech, now that confused me even more 🙂…
@thecampingbiker791
@thecampingbiker791 Год назад
@@jutjub22 ah, yes the resonating sound..only at slower speeds (sun 30) or at least couldn’t hear when higher but I believe there is a way to fix that by sticking rubber matting on the top part of the guard! Some oem aluminium guards on bikes have the matting already stuck on so I presume that’s the reason!
@thecampingbiker791
@thecampingbiker791 Год назад
@@jutjub22 to be honest just on gravel I think chances of damage is fairly low

You’re better off without a sump guard than a centre stand for touring Think about punctures, chain lubing, basic maintenance etc How about modifying the Rally Raid guard to fit around the stand?
@thecampingbiker791
@thecampingbiker791 4 года назад
briantheminer hi Brian, both sold and RR has been delivered..I’ll get a small scissor stand for garage maintenance and possibly a small stick lift for traveling. To be honest, I don’t know how both centre stand and RR guard could fit as both use the centre stand tube on bottom of bike, but anyhow they’ve gone and RR stand will be fitted in next few days 😆 👍🏻

Zero front protection on the Rally Raid apart from stone deflection,the RR looks better tho.The downside of the CB design,no frame to mount a bash plate and not many options available.
@thecampingbiker791
@thecampingbiker791 4 года назад
The RR is the stronger of the two but as you say bike design makes it a bit difficult, for most of my riding the RR will be just fine as I’ve found out from a 14 mile trail done in last couple of days..it did take a bit of a bashing and without it the sump would have got the bashing (and I fell off 😂)Haven’t posted the video but will be doing so soon 👍🏻

I disagree. My 500X is used as a touring bike so the centre stand is a necessity. The 500X is not the sort of off-road bike that needs anything stronger. Your money, your choice.

I’ve seen the off-road riding you for and for the SW Mototech product that’s a walk in the park. As I said, your money, your choice but for my money a very good skid plate and the centre stand are what the 500X needs to make the most of its touring ability. Your viewers need to hear that before they make 5heir own decision.

I change my mind quite a lot- your sump guard doesn't look right and would be totally useless if banged - the RR means I cant have a centre stand - but I use mine a lot- so what's the alternative? Thanks for sharing.

@thecampingbiker791 3 года назад
Hi Michael, I dropped out for the Rally Raid one and therefore ditched the centre stand, but a few thousand miles later I don’t regret changing and have managed well without the centre stand using a small bike lift at home. There doesn’t seem to be any other options out there and I’ve been doing a bit more trail riding than originally planned with the RR guard more than paying for itself with the bangs underneath I hear 😆
