Fitting The Extra Little Drawer: VW California Ocean

The time has finally come to fit our special little drawer and for us to become part of the now infamous “Little Draw Club”!
Watch the trials and tribulations of this simple task, made difficult by Will.
More importantly, let us know in the comments below if you already have the little drawer, and if you do, what you keep in it.
If you’re looking to fit this to your VW California Ocean or Coast, here are the parts you’ll need. If you need any help or advice, just drop us a message.
1x Drawer - 7E7 068 041 NA2 Complete Drawer (Palladium Grey - T6.1) - £257.14
OR
1x Drawer - 7E7 068 041 30T Complete Drawer (Moonrock Grey - T6) - £148.67
2 x Drawer Runners* - 7H7 067 470 - £161.57 (for both)
8 x Screw - N907 750 01 - £11.33 (for 8)
2 x Screw - N905 624 01 - £2.71 (for 2)
* If you want to try what I did and save a load of money on the rails, I bought mine from here: bit.ly/33i1KyV - 450mm version. You need two pairs of rails and just use the left handed rails from the pairs. £46.76 for both pairs, so over £100 cheaper than the VW ones!

Once again many thanks for the video. We also bought the kit from CEAutomotive. Unfortunately the wrong screws for fitting the runners were supplied. The holes for the runner screws are 5mm while the screws provided were 4.55mm. We sourced alternative screws from B&Q. I would make on suggestion wear thin work gloves when fitting the draw to the runners prior to screwing the two small holding screws ( which by the way are a pain ) in order to avoid getting any cuts to your fingers. Yes unfortunately l didn't and got a cut on each index finger.

100% right! So much stuff! We managed to fit a small 1.5kg bag of dry food, some wet food cans, Lucy's medications and some dentastix, rodeos etc all in there no problem at all.

Yes not cheap. Interestingly, I found out today that you can buy the palladium grey (T6.1) coloured front panel on it's own (£38 quid) and then fit it to the cheaper Moonrock coloured full drawer - all in for cheaper than buying the Palladium drawer ! Crazy!!

Great Video, after seeing it I bought the drawer set from CEAutomotive. They even recommended using your video as a good guide to fitting. Have to say it was a great help - especially the part about trying the screws in the holes first before trying to fit the rails etc... made life much easier. Very happy with the extra storage it gives. Thanks for the video.

Great video again! Now I have a quandary....didn't know that little panel pulled off, so now I can load through some fishing rods for cheeky sessions while away....unless SWMBO sees this video and decides we need more storage....

So many hidden surprises with the California! Well remember if you do fit the drawer you can always remove it easily and temporarily if you need to...

Yep we did too but found that they kept moving around as we were driving and we found it tricky to get the table out and then back in. We’ve adopted our new little drawer as the dog drawer now. She needs it for her meds as she’s so old!!

We used to do the same but I was always getting really annoyed with them catching on the table when trying to put it away. Which levellers do you have?

This is a fantastic video but I thought I’d add a price update (February 2022). My local VW dealer just charged me £202 for the drawer and the screws (no runners) 😬

Hello, Thans you for sharing . For info, I found in the Netherlands a box that fits perfectly in the empty space under the rear seat. It’s like the drawer but not made in metal. It costed me 71€ Sorry, I wanted to post some photos but I think it’s not possible here.

We don't have any roof bars for the Cali but from what we have heard, the Thule ones are decent and work well. I know if you ring Campervanbits then they can advise.

Thanks for the video. Will try DIY soon. Do you know the part number of the bolt with a plastic cap that catches the drawer? It seems some sellers are not shipping with the drawer.

Hi Will The link for the drawer runners only gives options for 400mm and 480mm but your description says 450mm, could you let me know which one is correct thanks 🙏

Ahh, I wonder if they are out of stock then. You might have to buy the genuine VW ones in that case. I am sure they are 450mm.

They are genuine VW parts, you can order from any dealer or CE Automotive with discount. Take a look at our video description for details. Remember this won't fit a beach though!

Oooo, good question. We haven't owned a beach and it's been quite a while since we saw one in person with a two seat bench. BUT, having just looked at a few videos online I can see you are more than likely right! Great news!

Having now got our Cali, I realised we should have specced the little drawer..😢 So, I am looking at the various parts needed and wondered if it was possible to use the cheaper Moonrock drawer and transplant the front panel from the existing Palladium cover. Are the two drawers physically the same apart from the colour of the cover..?

I think they are the same, yes, although I've never seen them side by side specifically. I think the part numbers for the individual parts are the same apart from the drawer front plastic cover, so that would say yes it should work.

I guess the existing front panel doesn’t have the cutout for the handle, so maybe swapping it wouldn’t work without some fettling…

can't find the screw N905 624 01 somewhere.. does anyone know the dimensions of that screw?

This gives you a picture - www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/screw/n90562401/ but essentially it is very slightly larger than 3mm diameter - ie, if you drill a 3mm hole you won’t be able to get the screw through it, quite, so needs tapping or very slowly easing through the metal to cut a path.
