Fitting Wax Foundation to Cleaned Honey Frames #Beekeeping Basics - The Norfolk Honey Co.
Fitting new foundation into recently cleaned beehive frames is an essential task for early Spring. It's something that needs to be done once the weather starts to warm up, I don't like to start too early or the wax losses some of it's new wax smell and I'm sure the bees prefer it as fresh as possible.

Hello Stewart. Just wondered if you'd do a video on different frames for supers and their benefits please for example Manleys versus SN1 SN2 SN4 SN5 - all very complicated!

Another handy vid, I wonder if I could ask a favor, on my channel, I have decided to film myself doing my inspections, being a bit of a noob, was hoping that people who have more experience, could maybe comment and say if they see any silly mistakes. The people I know locally have basically told me a load of rubbish,and my first year (last year ) was a fiasco. I want to improve and will weekly get better at filming the process. If too busy no probs its just a thought. Good luck.

That sounds like a great idea. Could I suggest posting the request in the Facebook group where lots of people will see it and I will happily endorse your request. Stewart

Hi Stewart, just a question on moving hives , i have two hives close to a hedge and they don't get any sun at all they also seam to be getting damp so was thinking moving them about 8feet forward so they will be out of the shadows, can i move them ?? maybe a bit per day ? i would hate to loose them from damp hives after getting them through the winter .. kindest regards Tim

Hi Tim, Yes you can move them, keep the entrance pointing in the same direction and move them about 2-3ft every few days. Watch the bees and confirm to yourself they have all found the new entrance before moving the hive again, all should be fine. Stewart

Do you ever trim the edges of the new foundation. I find somethines that the foundation is slightly wider than needed and causes warping!

Hi 170221dn, Yes I sometimes find I need to trim the edges of foundation sheets to keep them flat. The worse possible outcome is wonky foundation as the bees just go from there and you end up with wonky brood! Stewart

I heard pigeons. Do u raise them also mr stewart ?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 лет назад
The pigeons are a nesting pair in the tree above my head in the video. They are currently making a real mess beneath the tree but I don't have the heart to chase them away! Stewart

how many time will you reuse this frame before redoing the foundation?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 лет назад
Hi Joe, As part of my integrated pest management plan the frames will usually be replaced after approx. three years. I try to replace around 1/3rd of all brood frames each year. Enevitably this sometimes drifts to four years in some cases! Stewart
@troypierce3967
@troypierce3967 7 лет назад
replace just the foundation or the entire frame?
@joepearson1000
@joepearson1000 7 лет назад
foundation was the question. this replacement was for honey super. So you are saying you replace the honey super foundation every three years as well as the brood foundation?( I am thinking you are spinning the frames to get the honey.)
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 лет назад
Hi Joe, Sorry, trying to answer questions whilst at the Spring Convention. So, I swap out both brood and super wax approx. every three years. Not the frames. The frames get boiled, cleaned and reused. A range of nasties can get trampled through onto super wax so it is good practice to replace super wax regularly too. You will get a reduction in honey but I'll take this over spreading disease. Does that clear up my previous rather confusing message. Sorry again Stewart

Do you ever use plastic foundation
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 лет назад
Hi Troy, I've never used plastic foundation, I guess because I've always been happy with the wax foundation I've never felt the need to try it. Perhaps it's a experiment to add to the list for a future video. Do you use plastic foundation Troy? Stewart
@troypierce3967
@troypierce3967 7 лет назад
yes sir. but I'm only into my second year so i don't know very much. i have some solid plastic frames that came in some nucs i bought. i plan on this year to cut the center out of these and checkerboard them in to get some comb honey. people seem to be crazy over the novelty of comb honey

I saw a vid once where they said one of the benefits of plastic frames is they can make spotting fresh laid eggs easier to spot due to the dark frames, never tried it myself.

What is the OSR grown for?
@mal1857
@mal1857 7 лет назад
OSR seeds are crushed to extract the oil which is a edible vegetable oil. it can also be used a biofuel. The crushed seeds are then used as livestock feed.

Hi Conor, Exactly as MaL says. We also have some local producers of artisan Rapeseed Oil who rate it's taste alongside Olive Oil. Mostly I think you will find it on supermarket shelves as vegetable oil. Stewart

Thanks Stewart. I was just curious because there is a lot of it near me and next year I might try and put a hive there when I find out who owns it
