One reason why cable viewership is declining is because of channel drift. The basic cable networks that were once known for quality documentary programming quickly adopted the broadcast networks fad of fake reality trash TV programming.

ALL of these services, both cable and streaming, carry a ton of garbage channels that hardly anyone watch, but we are FORCED to pay for them anyway. They are there strictly for add revenue.

@@spaceghost4474 They are there because the media companies in order to allow the broadcasting of the cable channel the people actually want, require the cable companies to carry channels people don’t watch (and pay a per subscriber fee for the channels people do not watch). Also the media companies will only agree to a contract if their channels are considered part of the lowest level basic cable package.

The one channel that I am surprised hasn’t shutdown is BBC America. Almost all it broadcasts is American made movie and reruns. All of the British made programming has been transferred to pay services Britbox and AMC+/

Yep, MTV, IFC, Sundance and many others have similarly lost the plot and air NOTHING related to their original reason for existing, and a huge percentage of it is mainstream back catalog stuff, the same old shows and movies you can find on FAST except these networks repeat them on a loop throughout the day, or other assorted lowest common denominator crapola. Idiocracy has come to life.

@@stephenb3348 I agree. You can add channels like TLC and the Travel Channel to the list. The streamer providers are now creating the original content that cable media providers use to provide. Cable now has no original content and the content that is there are network show reruns, old movies, or shows that originally shown by streaming providers a year or two ago. Right now the only original content are news and sports channels, and that could be going away soon where you need to pay a streamer to watch that content.

The problem with BET is it strayed too far away from its original method and tried to be too commercialized. It was the place to be when I was growing up in the 80s, 90s, and maybe early 2000s. I'm just trying to figure out what the real reason they haven't tried to let Tyler Perry or Byron Allen buy it?🤔 Is it because they don't want to buy it all broken up like that or something else? We aren't getting real answers.😒

My first thought was Tyler Perry buying it. I think one of the problems Bet faces was when it was founded,content featuring blacks prominently was rare. These days content featuring black focus are all over networks and steaming.

Tyler Perry and I believe some others made offers for bet and they declined it. I don't understand why they won't accept an offer that was reasonable instead of just shutting it down for nothing. It's like someone selling a car for $5,000 when it's worth $1,000 and it just deteriorates in the yard.

@@donhenry7930 Sometimes there are believe it or not tax reasons and such where shutting it down actually makes them more ( I am not an accountant) back. Would seem a natural fit given Perry's production capability and properties /back catalog.

Realistically it would make sense to sell the BET networks to Byron Allen or maybe Tyler Perry as a co-owner. One of the reasons BET is losing viewership is because they show reruns of older Black skewing programs that are available on other channels and streaming. Byron Allen already bought the Weather Channel from NBC Universal a few years ago, and I believe his company is third in the number of local TV stations owned behind Nextstar and Sinclair.

Programming is not as good as it was before. There's too many watered down meh shows so people rather watch reruns of older TV that was better. They can get it for free. That's the issue. Why I'm a sports watcher. It's never the same old boring programming. It's true live TV.

I have Choice Direct TV package. I watch sports and local TV for weather and traffic reports. Mainstream media is broken. It is preaching messages that are politically oriented that I will not waste my time on. Cop shows and murder shows are boring. Old reruns of Law and Order make more sense then Hawaii CIS. Times have changed and not for the better.

Boomerang would have done better if it were on basic cable instead of expanded. More people would have watched it. That is why MeTV Toon is taken over the spot that Boomerang missed. A lot of people are watching classic shows than they are with the new stuff like the Reality shows.

⁠@@Chris24Adamnot because of being objective, but because it’s is well researched and the audience has already been bombarded with headlines that are not researched, and the audience is too fatigued to read more about it. The WaPo wrote a lengthy piece on the Opioid crisis, including how several Republican Congress people from Pennsylvania stopped the DEA from prosecuting pharma companies pushing pain killers. The series was outstanding, but I doubt enough people read it after other headlines. Case in point, Helene devastated North Carolina. I think I received about 10 headlines in 2 days from WaPo and NYT, and read most of it. I won’t be reading anymore even when more interesting developments occur, like about people’s lives, rebuilding, etc.

I do hate the idea of Boomerang shutting down but (IMO) David Zaslav has made it clear he hates animation. Not to mention they play more Scooby Doo with occasional Looney Tunes and Yogi Bear sprinkled in. I could see Freeform stick around for a bit. Disney could use them as a way to remind people about Hulu and Disney Plus. Paramount is failing with all their channels. Every channel only plays their number one show on repeat. MTV with Ridiculousness, Nick with Spongebob, the list goes on.

It may be better but it's not available everywhere. It's supposedly on in my area but the channel is so weak, you need to be within a mile of the tower. Nobody else can see it. But because this shows up as A station in this market, no other stronger station can decide to carry it. The station nobody can see has a lock on it. Awesome

No it didn’t but it’s been on life support ever since Christina miller’s rebranding of Cartoon Network and boomerang cause she was brought over from the internet side of Cartoon Network to run the whole thing ultimately a big mistake cause she essentially did a whole rebranding of the channels and turned what we already loved about boomerang and made it an expensive app minus the cool bumpers

One of the main cable channels I watch is RFD-TV, especially for the country music shows, as unless I subscribe to their streaming service or Sling, cable/satellite is the only way to watch it and its sister networks.

Yeah it seems like he does hate them but I don't know. All I do know is that cable companies have lost customers but he also reports that most of these streaming services are losing money all the time and have never made a profit. So honestly I don't think it's going good for anybody.

A question for Luke A little off topic. Optimum/Altice cable in the New York/New Jersey area is forcing people to upgrade to fiber. They are giving ultimatums switch or be terminated. I have the old copper wire cable and am perfectly happy. And I am sure that fiber includes an increase on your bill. As soon as they try that with me I am cutting the cord and going with one of the 5G wireless internet options I have. What do you think of this?

We have had fiber in my neighborhood for years and not used at all !! Everything is through Spectrum!! Very expensive!!! My bill to date is 260 month ,I do enjoy the record programs aspect 6 show at the same time !!! There going to be adding more services, but I all taped out ,I already got rid of some services ,trying to save money !!

Good plan. If it were me I'd probably overlap the two services for a few days at least, to test the 5G service and make sure it's going to work out before telling Optimum to get lost.

Midco communications is doing this in our area. I refused. It took them at least 4 hours to do what they needed to do inside & outside my neighbor’s house. That is absolutely ridiculous. If you are in the change area, you have to ‘upgrade’ or lose services. I only had internet through Midcontinent & discontinued services with them completely.

Hre's the big problem with these cable TV networks, all they seem to show is either reality TV or run a treadmill of reruns of old shows you can mostly get for free on some streaming services or as part of other paid streaming services. For example why would i pay a cabe TV provider to watch an endless lppo of the Andy Griffin Show wien I can either watch it for free on Pluto or if I have Paramount+. Also, networks like the History Channel not only pretty much stopped doing actual history programs in lieu of reality TV but when they do air an actual history program it's inaccurate as hell. The same goes for A&E which has totally given up on the Arts part and the Entertainment is questionable at best. I can keep going but I'd be here for ever listing all the trash that they want people to pay for so why pay when I can get 70-80% of it for free.

Yeah years ago I loved watching the history channel. Sometimes I'll still check to see what's on cuz there is a couple shows I enjoy but for the most part it's always Ancient Aliens or Skinwalker Ranch bull crap. Oh I almost forgot about them and The Money Pit that's been on for years.

Agreed, it's shocking to see how many cable channels just program 4 hour blocks of Law & Order, random sitcom #1 from 2015, random sitcom #2 from 2005, etc, regardless of the alleged name/branding of the network, ALL DAY LONG. That's acceptable for FAST or the nostalgia OTA channels I guess -- but this is pay TV! They stopped trying years ago, and any original programming they have is low-brow reality slop at best.

I have had WOW for a long time. They recently quit cable, now pushing RU-vid Tv and stayed with internet. Now the internet portion is soon to be taken over by Breezeline. I have been very satisfied with WOW for over 11 years. Sorry to see them go.

I miss WOW so much! They were super reliable. Internet outages were extremely rare with them. Maybe one brief outage every 4 or 5 years. I was a longtime subscriber to their cable/internet services. But several years ago, they sold their Ohio operations to a company called Breezeline. I've had zero issues with Breezeline, they are very reliable, too. But I still miss WOW!

basic cable has shows that broadcast networks don't have. plus you could pay more for movie channels and a few other shows.

The only way cable/satellite will end is when Regional Sports Networks get their own subscription apps. And if regular ESPN networks can be watched on ESPN+

The only people who may want and or need cable TV is older folks (non technical), parents for kids or business that don't want to deal with APPS. Not sure if there is enough of that population will be able to keep cable TV going though.

All I can predict is that as the number of cable subscriptions continue to plummet, the remaining customers will get gouged more and more to keep the whole thing alive. That's what has happened in the AT&T residential landline business. I will say, the 70+ population can navigate apps just fine, I know a lot that do. And for those that don't, if their TV package balloons to $200+/month, many will have increasing incentive to learn apps in a hurry.

@@glynnetolar4423MSNBC requires all news and opinion reporters to follow journalistic standards under NBC News rules. They cannot endorse or contribute to political candidates. Also all their news stories must be double sourced and vetted by producers before they go on air. Keith Olbermann was suspended (and almost fired) for breaking those rules. Can the Fox News mouthpieces say the same?

Everyone wants to make a buck !! Network are a over the place . Trying to discover how to screw over the consumer !!! Our cable company's are doing a pretty good job ! Between transportation and communications, the price of freedom is quite expensive !!! Now !!!!
