Hello folks, in this video I share five of the tips & techniques that I use to help make my garage a cool year-round hangout spot. Be sure to use caution, common sense, observe all established safety protocols and adhere to all manufacturer instructions if you choose to take advantage of any of these tips.
1. Add a Garage Fresh Air Screen.
a. They come in all sizes and are available as simple or as fancy as your budget will allow. They are fantastic for keeping out flying critters of all sizes; allowing the dog to roam freely in the garage and not ease out into the street and they create a measured level of privacy. While you can find these in all of the usual locations like Lowe’s, Menards, Home Depot, ebay and Amazon, I found the largest selection with the widest price spread on Amazon. Now, since I am a strong advocate for buying local which supports vendors in your community, this is not an endorsement for Amazon. Just stating facts. You can realistically spend anywhere from $45 to several thousands.
2. Household ceiling fans.
a. These are great tools for creating a cool breeze in the warmer months and circulating warm air in the cooler months. An added bonus derived from using household ceiling fans is that you can easily find models that move a lot of air and are rated as “whisper quiet.” You need a quiet fan when you are trying to entertain, simply watching sports or you want some alone time. Bonus, they are easy to install. I found the flush mount 42” fans shown in the video at Menards for $24 each (currently $27 when you factor in their 11% rebate). Sure, you can spend more, but why?

3. Propane Convection Heater.
a. Just like the ceiling fan, you want a unit that is relatively quiet and has the ability to heat up your garage in a short time frame. I found a portable unit that puts out 80,000 BTU’s for approximately $80 at Menards.

4. Slightly bruised and reduced smart televisions.
a. Budget friendly deals on ‘garage’ televisions aren’t hard to find. My recommend is to definitely shoot for a smart TV with a few built-in apps like Netflix, Amazon Movies, Screen Mirroring and a music app like Pandora. For these deals be sure to check out consignment stores, and definitely don’t be afraid to go into your local Best Buy in search of a display unit with a few scratches. I found a brand new 42” Insignia television at a consignment store for $70 because it didn’t have a remote. In fact, it still had the plastic and all stickers on it. I got a replacement remote on Ebay for about $10.00. I also found a 40” Sony smart television at Best Buy that was used as a display model. It needed a stand and remote which were nonissues for me since I had planned to hang the television on the wall. My other televisions are Sony so a remote is a mute issue.
5. Cheap over the air HD antenna. Not hard to find and super easy to mount in or outside of your garage and attach to your television.
6. Bonus tips:
a. Consider adding outlets in your garage (and around your home?) that have built in USB for charging multiple phones/tablets simultaneously.
b. Find comfortable folding chairs that can be hung on your wall and out of the way when bringing your car inside of your garage
c. Consider a ‘Block Rocker’ or some other Bluetooth music transmitting device that allows you to listen to music or podcasts when you don’t want your television on. You can easily stream content from your cell phone to the device. These work great on warm summer nights when you simply want to sit in your garage and enjoy a breeze with all lights off. Sure you could just play music from your cell phone but for me I like a little oomph with my music.
