You don't need a rocket science degree to test melting ice, just use the same amount of ice in each cooler, that's all. Ever hear of a BTU? Any cooler that has more ice than others has an advantage over those with less. It really isn't that complicated....

As a Registered Maine Guide leading 10 day canoe trips on the Allagash River, I use the Cabela's Polar Cap® Equalizer Cooler and routinely will have ice (starting with block ice) after 7 -9 days on the water. I have found nothing that compares. They are heavy and expensive, but fit perfectly across the gunnels of Old Town XL Tripper Canoes and hold ice for the duration, which is a game changer for diet options on long trips. Great video, thanks....

Protip: Instead of buying bags of ice, fill a few Ziploc bags with water and leave them in your freezer. They will last far longer than cubes and won't get your food all wet. Also, they will take up space in your freezer so you'll save energy during the year as the otherwise empty space won't have to be cooled down every time you open the door. Plus, if your power ever goes out, they will save the rest of your food. One time, I was at a 3 day concert with a girl who was hot so I gave her one of the bags of water with the huge ice cube still in it and she loved it. She put her feet on it and it cooled her right down! This could actually save a life if you have a friend who's overheated! Protip #2: I knew a guy who put a couple pieces of aluminum foil over the top of his cooler before he closed it. It supposedly kept the cold air in better so you could just open the cover then pull up a corner to grab what you wanted. Also, I imagine it would also work as a radiant barrier if your cooler is going to be sitting in the sun for any length of time. You should buy two different color coolers of the exact same brand and test if having a light color that reflects more light actually makes the ice last longer.

I love these cooler tests, but one thing I never see tested/tried is something I used to do years ago with a Yeti 160qt (back when it was basically Yeti or nothing). I traveled extensively and I'd leave my Yeti in the back of my Ford Explorer all the time through heat/cold/etc. One of my tricks was to stop off at Publix and buy a block of Dry Ice and toss it in the bottom of the cooler, close the lid and give it an hour. After that, I'd hit up Sam's Club and toss in about 120lbs of ice (these were 30lb bags they sold) and I'd wait an hour. After my ice was sufficiently frozen as hard as it was going to get from the dry ice I'd load in a couple of cases worth of water and all of my food. Dry ice obviously pre-cools the cooler drastically. Ice on top is insulated underneath by the dry ice but the cooler doesn't get cold enough to freeze your food and drinks, because the ice itself is insulating your food/drinks from -109F temps. That Yeti would hold ice for 2-3 weeks in the winter and 7-10 days in the summer, sometimes sitting in the back of that SUV baking in 120F-130F temps. I'm a HUGE fan of pre chilling coolers and the contents that go into them, but if you have a large cooler, it's cheaper to buy dry ice from Publix @1.50/lb than it is to buy a bunch of ice, drain and then fill up with more ice. If you need to get as much longevity out of your ice as possible, buy a large cooler, pre-chill with ample dry ice and pack it with as much ice and pre-chilled products as possible. These days, almost all of these coolers are close enough to being the same as each other. If you're worried about day 5 vs day 6, buy the cheaper cooler and buy a chunk of dry ice. You don't need an entire block, I just went that route because mine was so large, and the temps so extreme.

I find it funny that you had to bring them inside each night, to keep someone from stealing them I assume. In my opinion this makes the igloo a clear winner. I'd like to see a test where you put the coolers out on the street overnight and see which one last the longest.

About fifteen or twenty years ago when I was a Scout leader, one of the assistant Scoutmaster in my son's troop had a Coleman cooler that he'd take to summer camp filled with ice and soda for the adults. At the end of the week, that thing still had a ton of ice in it. Cost much less than a Yeti too.

I recently purchased a Tundra 65 and filled it up with beer and ice for Super bowl. Cooler was inside at room temperature (68-70). What was left of the beer remained ice cold for over a week and there was plenty of ice left too. Aside from the price I've been a very happy camper with all my Yeti stuff!

Pro tip, when using ANY cooler with beverages. 1st, place the beverages the bottom of said cooler. 2nd, place ice on top of beverages to cover. 3rd, fill cooler with as much water to bring water level within an inch of cooler top rail. This procedure ensures ice cold beverages, probably not for 5 days but how often do you need beverages cold for 5 days in a row

Thanks for the test. Because the price of these things are usually outrageous, I bought an Engel AC/DC Portable Tri-Voltage Fridge/Freezer for about $650 on sale. I never have to buy ice again. I turn the dial a little more, it'll make ice. My primary use is for camping, but it also is our emergency fridge during power outages caused by tropical storms and hurricanes. Just another alternative to a $$ cooler and ice.

I have a 50 QT K2 cooler here in Dubai UAE. It has been in my car for 3 full days in temperatures never less than 95 Deg up to 125 Deg. I opened it up 3 times a day. My sodas and fruit stayed ice cold even though the ice almost failed at the end. Did not pre cool it and put everything in it warm from the supermarket shelf. Pretty happy with it. At the temperatures you are showing on the ground i think the K2 would stay cold for 5 Days. Key thing for me is even though the ice has almost melted the product is still ice cold. Cold enough to stop me holding the can for a long time in my hand. Plus it was around 200 USD.

I have one of those Igloo "Ice Cube"coolers, hold up to 90 cans, whatever quartage that makes... I drilled several holes in the bottom rim of the lid and the top rim of the base, as well as drilled holes in the bottom of the cooler and filled the holes with spray foam. I agitated the foam as I sprayed it in by vibrating the cooler and lid with a palm sander in hopes of more even distribution. After the foam set I cut off the excess. I took very thin rubber weather striping(self adhesive) and used that as a barrier between the lid and base to help airproof it. In total I spent $25 for the cooler(and it has an extension handle and wheels) $8 for the spray foam, and less than $10 for the rubber striping. My cooler will hold ice for 3-5 days depending on how often it's opened. This for under $45 works for my broke ass. Maybe I'll modify it further in the future, but for now I'm content. Great video by the way. 👍

Hey LeeROBD ,I'm trying to understand your logic here. We Bro's in Oz like a Beer or Three and I can tell you now when you are 500 miles from the nearest Ice joint in any direction these suckers are all useless. On 120 degree summer days in less than 36 hours you'd be drinking Sahara conditioned Brews. We roll 20 beers a day on average so as soon as the Hot replacements go in that Ice is Shagged.

My results with grizzly coolers have been great! In addition to keeping ice longer than my buddy’s yeti my grizzly has a LIFETIME warranty with replaceable latches for when the rubber rips. All rubber exposed to the sun will eventually wear out, I had a set to wear out and grizzly sent me five latches free of charge. The rubber feet on the bottom prevents it from sliding all over the back of my truck too. To each their own but I’ll be a grizzly customer for life since my cooler will keep ice for a week straight with no problem!
@Joe_Blo
@Joe_Blo 6 лет назад
High end coolers with lid seals and strap latches are for mounting on top of vehicles or in back of pickup trucks. The seals prevent air circulation and melted ice water from sloshing out. They might also prevent food odors from attracting critters. Otherwise, a the red rubbermaid is good enough for most situations. Cover it with a $1 space blanket to keep ice a day longer. As an aside, surprised Tesla has not yet marketed a limited edition $1000 red cooler for their fan boys.

We have a 45qt rotomolded cooler straight from China that cost a fraction of a Yeti, has 2 bottle openers, cutting board, tray for food items, a drink holder for the outside, and a lock. The ice lasts about the same in both, nice colors also. I think Yeti is overhyped by far!!!

I’m an OTR trucker which is the only reason I was even interested in coolers. I’d been wanting a Yeti for roughly a year and finally my gf got me one as a gift.....honestly it’s great and keeps the temp very cold but the ice melts as fast if not faster than the Coleman I got for free off a job or the $20 Rubbermaid I had before that. It starts to melt after 1 day and day 2 there is quite a bit of water in the bottom.

This is really useful and for those that point out lack of perfection, do bear in mind this review given FOR FREE. The review is a great start to discussion on coolers. For example, what about the other features? I think WHEELS is a huge part of the deal, and many, maybe most do not have wheels. Watch your back without wheels and I don't care how strong you are, or think you are, carrying one of these fully loaded is not way to prove it, just a good way to get hurt. How about trays and partitions? That can matter a whole lot. And empty weight, let's say you are only going out for the day, any cooler can handle that so why not use the lightest cooler, with wheels? And don't forget price, why pay for more than you need?

Couple questions: did you ever record the temperatures of the exteriors of the ice chests and how much difference the color makes? It seems to me that although nice appearing a dark colored cooler would be defeating the purpose? Have you compared the Cabelas brand ice chests? Also anyone tested a plane non plastic Styrofoam ice chest? When I was a kid we took an 18 day private airplane trip from Seattle clear to the Arctic Ocean and Yukon Territories along with two other private planes. Weight was of course of paramount concern so my father bought two (likely) 50qt plain Styrofoam coolers, pre-froze everything, put down some newspaper and 5lbs of dry ice (frozen Co2) and sealed them with duct tape and never opened the second cooler until day 11. Everything was still frozen solid! As we used up the food we just gave the coolers to some of the local people. Over the years I saw my father do this many times on different trips and once the cooler had served it's purpose he always gifted them to someone along the way. So yes YETI'S are really nice quality, along with most of these new generation of ice chests. But $400-800 for a plastic molded, Styrofoam injected ice chest. Seems a tad excessive. Personally it seems to me a bit foolish to waste your money on things like this when you can more wisely invest your money in wine, woman, and song!

I have a Siberian cooler. It works fantastic. But keep this in mind. If the weather is hot and your family is drinking a lot, and you have to add more drinks to the cooler that aren’t PRE-CHILLED (warm or room temp), you WILL be adding more ice. When you add in warm cans or bottles, you will be melting your ice at a much faster rate. If you can, add them early in the morning, when the drinks have cooled to the outside cooler temps. The more expensive coolers not only hold ice longer but they are built to be more durable.
@TylerD600
@TylerD600 8 лет назад
The larger the ice is the longer it keeps. Crushed ice is colder because it has a total higher surface area than cubed. However, crushed iced melts more quickly. This may be why the orca cooler seemed to keep so long as it looks like the ice cubes are larger

Good video. I use Igloo coolers. Truckstops have ice , and I don't need to have a cumbersome cooler to pick up and dump out. I recommend using a rubber mat underneath to insulate from floor heat caused by exhaust. They are all made of plastic and insulation, so I'm waiting for a cheaper version of the Yetti to come down to earth on their price... $40. Tops....they are not 14karat plastc...and I don't need a bottle opener for water/sodas...or a bear proof lock...

Just one time I want to see how an old steel Coleman does in one of these challenges against all these $500 coolers. You can get a brand new one in stainless for less than 1/3 of the price, I guarantee it will hold it's own, and it's got a bottle opener on the side.

I recently got a Kodi cooler, HEB's brand of coolers, made to compete against yeti, and I'm very impressed with it's performance. I put it up against my father in law's yeti cooler, both same size (20 oz) and it seemed that they did about the same, I think the Kodi did a bit better, in a 4 day challenge in the dead summer heat in Texas. Kodi cooler is actually about 100 dollars less each size than the Yeti. Take a look at it!

The real reason to buy Roto Molded coolers is for the versatility of being used as sturdy seat or platform with non slide rubber feet. Perfect for a boat or small skiff. Holding ice longer is just the icing on the cake. Buy second hand or get an Rtic.

Money is not the issue and 4 -5 days is nothing try 20 when it's over 100 ever day. Cold for as long as possible is the issue. Take an 18 day trip down the Colorado River in July when temps are 105 every single day. You need the best. Build the ice up in an ice house over 10 days before leaving. Load vacuum sealed foods, more water, you want a solid block of ice with sealed frozen foods in the block. Leave a small amount of space for dry ice on top. Seal the cooler. Some of our coolers don't get opened until the second week of the trip. Always drain the water off the ice. Water sloshing around in the cooler generates energy and will melt ice faster then the air that gets in when drained. Think this stuff doesn't matter, what's an ice cold beer worth with a steak dinner 2 weeks after launching when it's 105. We pay big money for these coolers and for good reason.

Well no, in reality you wont open your cooler just once a day and you wont be filling it strictly with prechilled items. What this test comes down to is that, assuming a linear model of melt vs time, the rotomolded coolers keep ice twice as long. That means that if youre in conditions where your ice may last just 6 hrs in a rubbermaid, itll go for 12 in one of the rotomolded coolers. May or may not be important for you.

I have 2 Igloo max cool 50 qt coolers that I use and they hold the cold pretty good. I put 2 - 10lb bags of ice in it on Friday morning and some water bottles. After it had cooled everything down for 24 hours I put another 2 bags in it on Saturday morning and drained the water off. It's now Monday night and there is still plenty of ice left. $60,00 and they keep cold for days. It will hold ice for a week if it's not to hot in the summer. The trick is to get everything cooled down and keep the water drained off and keep them out of the sun.

I’ve got the yeti 45, I can’t grab a bag of hollow ice at a gas station and throw in a hot cooler. It won’t last longer than lunch time. If I go to our high end ice box in town and out my cooler under the slot and let it fill it up rather than get a bag and poor myself I can get a weekend out of it. I’m in Alabama. I’d say the quality of the ice is a big thing. Also they recommend you get a sacrificial bag of ice to keep the cooler cool before your fishing trip or work day or what have you. I think for the price it shouldn’t take that much. It definitely a top of the line cooler compared but for the money it’s not worth it. Cool review👍🏻

Thing is, you are going to use up what ever food is in the cooler in less than 2 days. So you can just get more ice when you get more food. I would guess most people that buy Yetis don't use then more than a day, they just get them to show off.
@icedink87

Well if you use the cooler every day you save money in the long run. In theory you buy a bag of ice every 5 days instead of every day. My boring old colman lasts about 4 days and the yeti lasts 5 so if i save like $10 a month on ice it will take 2 years to pay for itself. Not worth it in my opinion

I had a pelican wheeled 80qt cooler and while it was a tough, durable, beast of a cooler, it was just waaay too heavy to use for beach runs or even 3 day camping trips. Loaded with food and ice, it became unbearably heavy. All of these rotomolded coolers are very heavy so I would just keep that in mind when making your purchase. I ended up using a normal igloo cooler which works PLENTY well for 3 day camping trips and is significantly lighter. My application for the cooler did not match what the cooler was intended for I guess. Just my 2 cents for those thinking about one of these Keep the weight of the cooler plus ice/food in mind when deciding. Happy researching!
@mikem1436
@mikem1436 8 лет назад
Not many people fill up a cooler with only 6 cans of soda. Not many people pre-chill their coolers. Here is how I would do the test. Exactly weigh 20 pounds of ice and put that ice in each cooler. Wait 24 hours, drain the water into a container, and weigh (with a good digital scale) how much the water weighs. That will give a good indication of how much ice melted per cooler at the test temperature. If only a few pounds melted, go another 24 hours and repeat. Based on that if I purchase XYZ cooler and I know I will need ice for X amount of time, I'll then know the minimum amount of ice that is needed. In the real world the cooler will be opened numerous times throughout the day so it will take more ice than under the test conditions.
@gerrymiles4278
@gerrymiles4278 8 лет назад

+gerry miles it was an interesting test. On top of what you mention not many people only open their cooler when out only once every 24 hours. Especially when you have kids that like pop. its hard to keep the cooler closed. But a good test anyway
@DustinBKerensky97
@DustinBKerensky97 8 лет назад
Well you have to have some control over the test. All foods and kids will throw things off. And yes I do always prechill my cooler. ;) You'd be surprised how many people who goto the outback carry a second "long term" cooler that rarely gets opened and mostly holds ice to recharge the main cooler.
@asmcriminaL
@asmcriminaL 7 лет назад
Your test won't matter. The volumes of the coolers are different. Whether someone chills the cooler or not, 6 sodas or not, it doesn't matter. The test was "constant" in comparison. Filled to capacity, that is what matters. A bigger cooler holds more ice, a smaller one holds less. Putting 20lbs in each cooler would not really show anything. There is more air in the cooler if you use a bigger cooler and less if you use a smaller cooler. Your test would not be constant. The test performed in the video is constant. If you want to use weight, you fill up the cooler to let's say 75% capacity. Thus a 20QT cooler would be 14QTs of ice. You can get the density of ice and figure out how much 14QT's would weigh and put that much in that cooler and do the same for the rest of the coolers(add 75% of the volume of ice).

That's a great test to show how they stack up against each other with the same conditions but it's really not real world where you're opening and closing multiple times a day and adding warm beverages during the day so I doubt any of those would make it 3 days but for comparison on what's colder and what doesn't cut it that was a great test of course they couldn't be marketed for lasting 5 days under real-world conditions

Went on a 3 day fishing trip and spent nearly $40 on ice refilling “cheap” coolers. The average weekender douche that “has to have” a yeti to keep their beer cold is well... a douche, but if used regularly for camping, fishing, and keeping other game cold I could see the practicality of spending up for a cooler. It would eventually pay for itself.
