A $5.00 can of "great stuff" low expansion spray foam, makes any cheap cooler perform 4 times better. Just drill a few holes on the inside, insert the tube, and spray away. Extra $10 on materials. The rest is design and marketing value.
@Bound4Earth
@Bound4Earth 4 года назад
Except it is way more then $10 more, that amount of extra plastic alone adds up. The Igloo was on sale and probably cost 60-80 normally and had thin plastic all around compared to the thickness in the Yeti. I understand the price difference is large, but anyone that does long-term outdoors events and camping appreciate a cooler that can keep ice for upwards of a week. There are other brands that are cheaper but also overbuilt like the Yeti. Some also use it to keep elk or boar meat fresh on the trip home.

I own a couple of these yeti coolers. There is no cooler that can compare with its durability and length it keeps items cold. Even out in the sun all day at the beach it will keep ice all day. I can drop it off the back of my truck fully loaded and it won’t crack or open. This is cooler to keep. Those $50 you will most likely replace every year due to them breaking where as the yeti will last much longer. Mine are going on 5 years now. So in my opinion the realistic question is do you want to spend $400 once or spend $50 a year on coolers and spend more on ice

Nicolas San Roman I have bought my cheap Coleman cooler in 2008 and it's still perfect. I've been to deserts, mountains, hunting, beaches. I try not to abuse it and take care of it - no doubt the yeti could take more abuse but come on, 400$ are you kidding me. Not to count the much thicker walls is much less payload for the same external size - that is a huge deal breaker.

The obvious test is to determine how long each will keep the inside to 40 deg F. Then, you decide which is more economical for your use. I suggest the most cost efficient solution is have a smaller cooler inside a larger cooler. Insert additional foam insulation between the two. Now, you have more than double the insulation which will keep your inside temperature to 40 deg F much much longer.

I’ve done that, and it makes all the difference in the world. It’s all about the top being insulated. In my cheaper, Coleman coolers I’m actually thrown a layer of plastic and a small poly blanket over the top and that makes all the difference in the world too. So buying a cheaper cooler and doing expandable foam into the hollow top will turn it. Almost into a yeti. Not quite but good enough.

It always depends on what you are using a cooler for. With me, I got a cooler because we have had power outages that have lasted 10 days and an expensive cooler is already paid for the first time you don't have to throw out all of the food in the fridge. I also wanted it for long car trips. I have driven cross country 5 times and being able to really trust that the food will still be good at the end of a week is important. Also for longer camping trips. That versus people who just bought a cooler for drives to the beach. When I was younger, I always bought the cheap ones. But I have ended up buying multiple cheap ones and losing multiple refrigerator loads of food and at my age, I look back and would say to myself, "Get a good cooler the first time" It doesn't have to be a Yeti, but one that will hold ice for 10 days.

Never personally owned a Yeti cooler. I have friends who have them and they swear they can go a week without loosing ice. Of course...IT ALL DEPENDS on how often you access the cooler though. If you have beer in the cooler the ice wont last because it will be opened constantly until the beer is gone...then you have to add beer, etc. If you put vitamin water in it, it will never be opened and it will last much longer...regardless of the cooler brand ------

Yeti is for people who want others to know they have money to burn. It has more plastic. Plastic is incredibly cheap. The price is an insult.....but if they can fool people into paying it, well, there's one born every minute. I have been using a Rubbermaid cooler for my lunches at work for 25 years. I can put warm cans of water in it with an ice pack and about 45 minutes later it's like it came out of the fridge. It will keep ice for a couple days, sometimes 3 days. I paid $14 for it 25 years ago. If there are more people who will pay that kind of money for cheap plastic and insulation.....I am in the wrong business. The profit margin is astounding!I also have a couple large Igloo coolers for fishing trips. They are very large coolers, and I paid maybe $35 for each of them. They will keep fish packed in ice for a couple days. Don't need to pay "too much" to get what I need. People have to realize a lot of brands are this way......not really different for the amount of price they have.

PS there is no plastic in my cup. I would pay more for a quality coole r but not that much, I'll wait for prices to come down.

My igloo cooler keeps ice and fish for over 2 nights, and there is still ice. That is a BIG cooler and it cost only about $45. My Rubbermaid that I've used for lunch for 25 years easily keeps things cold for over 24 hours. It cost about $14 then, about $18 - $20 now. I can see no way why anyone would pay over $50 to get the same performance.

Contacted lifetime because it has a lifetime warranty and they sent me a brand new one at no cost to me! With that kind of customer service, I will definitely buy lifetime products again.

The fact is that the yeti is way more efficient. People have tested yetis vs knock off brands and the yeti wins every time.

I agree..... for most people. If you need something really rugged the Yeti or a knockoff might be worth the investment. Average family camping or day at the beach a cheap cooler is just fine. I drive truck and see a number of trucks that have a Yeti secured to the catwalk behind the cab. Something facing that abuse needs to be solid and robust. Me, I have a cooler sized (65 qt) portable freezer/refrigerator in my truck that runs on either 12vdc or 120vac and adjusts from -6° to 50° and uses very little power..... and no ice. Cost me about $600 but has saved me more than that in bags of ice over the last two years.

Never had any other cooler make it past lunch on those sweltering days unless I did a 3/1 ice to drink ratio which just made us refill it more and melt the ice faster. Plus with the yeti ice packs and our freezer making some ice as well I haven’t had to buy ice in years now. I think $400 Is a little steep but it’s certainly worth $250-300 based on performance and durability alone

Igloo is made in USA. 🇺🇸 I can leave my igloo cooler at the campsite without worrying someone will steal it. Drinks and ice in the yeti turn it into a two person chore just to lift it. Empty, the 65qt yeti weighs as much as a case of bottled water. The igloo is super light. The other couple camping with us still had to buy ice for their yeti, but we did have to re-ice once more than them. No big deal. The igloo lid is hollow. Drill holes in the outside of the lid and fill it with expanding insulation. Yeti is about image.

@@Jawsjawsjawsrg The handful of ppl needing to meet bear-proof campsite requirements isn’t what’s keeping Yeti in business. Nor is it the even smaller number of ppl who need 4 days of ice because of how far off the grid they’re going. Ice isn’t some rare, expensive commodity.

Spend $400 to keep $2 worth of ice for a few extra days... If that ain't murica I don't know what is.

Riot wtf is "Murica".. you mean "America," with an A and an E.

Really....yeah, a couple days is pretty important if your food is in there, and there is no more ice. I'll take ice cold meat over warm 2 day cooler meat I think.

Lonnie Walker you can do the same thing with a $100 cooler. Yeti is just flat out overpriced.
@lonniewalker4441
@lonniewalker4441 6 лет назад
Riot I agree they are overpriced, but you can't show me a comparison where a $100 cooler outperforms the yetis. Yes they are overpriced, but they do work. I work on the road, in South MS, and LA, and nothing keeps ice in my trunk like the yeti. Not really worth it if you occasionally use a cooler, but if you actually need to use a cooler every day, it gets to be a pain emptying, filling & dealing with it everyday....the yeti makes a big difference. Sure, there's other options, but the people saying their playmates, or igloos are the same are delusional.

You should do an ice melt time test.

I use to work at a production facility that made Yeti coolers. I literally had to sign a NDA agreement to fill those with the special foam they invented. Quite cool.

A $20 Coleman will do just fine for me. Drill a few holes in the lid and fill with Great Stuff. Thanx for sharing.

I've done this before and it actually works great. But I drilled one hole and used an extension tube for the great stuff spray foam

lid and hinges still would have no comparison to the rotomold coolers....still egg carton durability. RTIC is similar to Yeti but much less in price. I have Coleman, YETI and RTIC....coleman is no comparison when it lives in truck bed for durability or ice retention

yeti has about $4.87 worth of more material, that somehow equals 700% increase in price. GTFO.

Overpriced for what it does. But I guess a yuppie needs something to stash in the back of the Range Rover to keep up the pretense.

Great team! Lincoln, I'm with you...I think I would put a cheap cooler inside a plastic box with extra space all around...then fill with expanding foam. That would be a fun test...
