Five Great Post Apocalyptic CRPGs You Should Play (That Aren't Fallout) 

Wasteland 3 might be the most underrated game ever.

I kinda like "Mutant Year Zero" & "Miasma Chronicles." The games really give a more pronounce feeling for that mutant powers in post apocalyptic setting.

Previous games of Iron Tower Studio, Age of Decadence and Dungeon Rats are on post-apocalyptic setting with Roman empire coat of paint.

_Wasteland_ is a strong contender for my favorite game of all time. The first one. I've been through it literally hundreds of times since 1989.

Those who like ATOM RPG will like Trudograd, its sequel It’s a huge step up from its predecessor

Personally I want more sci fi CRPGs. Colony ship, Rouge Trader, encased...I find these settings and their lore way more interesting than a wasteland most of the time.

Good picks, played them all and enjoyed them to varying degrees. Colony ship definitely deserved honorable mention, I really enjoyed it (just finished it a few weeks ago).

For me, I really want to warmly recommend Encased. It was a game I enjoyed immensly for 3-4 playthroughs.

Thanks to the Fallout TV show, the postapocalypse is on my mind as well. I've reinstalled New Vegas and Fallout 2, and I'm observing the massive Fallout London mod for Fallout 4 again. They had a release date, but Bethesda managed to nuke that with their next gen update for FO4 releasing just 2 days later. Bethesda. Bethesda never changes.

It should be mentioned that Fallout was basically a spiritual followup to Wasteland with involvement of some of the same developers (Brian Fargo for example was the producer of Wasteland then president of Interplay). EA held the rights to Wasteland so Interplay/Black Isle made Fallout then after Bethesda took control of Fallout, inXile (made of up of ex Interplaly & Black Isle staff) managed to get the rights to Wasteland back. The tone difference between the Wasteland series and Fallout is due to the different writers. Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas were heavily influenced by Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Chris Avellone of BlackIsle/Troika/Obsidian fame while Wasteland was written by Ken St Andre and Michael Stackpole, 2 prominent figures in tabletop gaming during the 80s and 90s. Both series are awesome in their own regard but I feel the Wasteland games have more of the 80s over-the-top sci-fi vibe while Fallout has more of a 90s edge that has remained across both series.

Colony Ship is definitely post-apocalypse, more than once in fact (it is implied that the ship is the Last Best Hope to avoid Earth's impending doom, and then the Mutiny is an apocalypse moment for the ship). I harp on about it but Dead State (even if it is only half-finished) is a nice CRPG take on a zombie post-apocalypse, and one which refreshingly isn't an XBox pad button-masher like the entire rest of said genre.

Nice package. Still have to play Trudograd (from AtomRPG team) siting on my ssd. There's also Tunguska Visiation that's like "Isometric STALKER" highly recommended.

Underrail is truly a gem. It can be very hard to get into, but if you persist, maybe restart after you’ve played a while (say five hours or so?) and have an idea how things work, it’s truly an amazing, very deep experience. It’s also much bigger (especially nowadays) than you might expect.

God Underrail is so good. W2/3, ATOM, and Encased are also good .

In wasteland 3 When I happened upon upon some religious zealots keeping alive a begrudging Ronald Reagan robot as their leader. I knew the only thing to do in that moment was to pour a glass of Kentucky bourbon.

Fallen Earth (still being worked by a group of independent mods/etc) was still up and running a couple months ago.

The makers of Atom RPG are currently doing a kickstarter for their next game, Swordhaven. Although it’s more fantasy / Baldur’s Gate 1&2 inspired rather than post apocalypse / Fallout. Looks promising and a demo out on Steam

more a traditional roguelike than a cRPG but Caves of Qud is one of my favorite post-apocalypses there's also Kenshi but Kenshi is its own weird thing

Wasteland 3 was special suprise for me how much i did enjoyed that title. Glad I still have ti play ATOM RPG and Trudograd.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that Wasteland is actually a spritual predecessor to Fallout with Interplay developing Wasteland 1 then later the early Fallout games. I would put Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader in the honorable mentions category since the entire Warhammer 40,000 setting is an interstellar post apocalypse dark age with the damage inflicted bloodiest war in the Imperium's history considered puny compared to the ancient pre-Imperium wars that brought down the old Human interstellar states.

Jupiter hell, quasimorph and subterranean missions of titans are all 3 really good

I completely forgot about Underrail. Thanks for reminding me, I was just looking for a game to play. As usual, you're the best. By the way, will you do a review of Fallout: London? It's supposed to be released on April 24th, unless it's delayed. I have high hopes for this mod.

Space wreck was very fun!! Bought it early access. Definitely recommend for those who like og fallout

Encased might be one of my favorite RPGs. Only full RPG I know where you can sneak through the whole game skipping talking to people entirely and have no clue whats going on in the game.

I'm a huge fan of the ATOM RPG, but the first one was way better than the sequel. This game called "Tunguska: The Visitation" is also worth trying if anyone's into ATOM RPG. Now I'm off to play Space Wreck!

Can anyone tell me what is the game displayed during the wrap up? I tried to google clues like chat 0 matic, Oksana Timchenko and Crump Yet nothing related to the game comes up. It doesn't look like any of the other games mentioned previously. It looks incredibly familiar tho, I just have no idea what it is.

While not a CRPG, one game with this theme that stuck with me was The Surge 1. That game takes place a bit into the future and the world is just about to become a post apocalypse due to climate issues that have reached a boiling point and it being too late to fix it. I don't know why but seeing a world ending rather than the aftermath really is haunting.

Maybe with further patching and expansions (especially as regards the companions and combat), Broken Roads could be one to play after all of these.

One of my favorite indie post apocalyptic game is Neo Scavenger.

I've found that I prefer post-apocalyptic fantasy over alt history or scifi. One of my favorite D&D settings is Dark Sun. It's so sad they're all in on the Forgettable Realms these days, but I digress. Grim Dawn, Elden Ring, the Diablo series, etc. All are really fun for me to play, and I like the aesthetic too. I think a big part of it is that I just prefer 'magic' over real world-like firearms and explosives, even though I know they're essentially the same thing from a game-y combat standpoint.

Dustwind is an amazing original Fallout game-like made by an indie German development team.

Thanks for the video. Post apocalyptic is good and all, but why can't we get an apocalyptic CRPG? Maybe it's nihilistic, but it would be interesting to play on a doomed land. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.

As ARPG maybe The Ascent can be mentioned. Also I got some Fallout vibes from The Outer Worlds although the setting and premise is a bit different the world and colonies are well beyond the thriving happy stage...

Wasteland 3 is really good. Hopefully they can get a bigger budget.

Two things. One, Orphans of the Sky. Heinlein? Can't remember for sure, tho' I know I read it years ago. And 2) aren't the Torment games worthy of an honourable mention? Or do we not consider them to be post apocalyptic? In ant case, good vid

I loved Fallout3, I put a lot of time into it, completed it and immediately rolled a new toon and started again. Fast forward 10 years or so and I got the itch to play it again. The original ran rock solid and rarely crashed, but the GotY edition that I got was buggy as hell, play for an hour and it exits, play for 5 minutes and it exits, tried all the usual stuff... drivers, compatibility mode, shouting at it etc and all to no avail. During this period I was still trying to play it, but doing a LOT of saving

Underrail is just awesome, don't look at the graphics, the game, the story, the mechanics are just incredible and very difficult, I finished 3 years ago and I recommend it a lot , just listen to me 😄

ATOM RPG Trudograd should be mentioned along the original game. The sequel stands head and shoulders above with enhanced visuals, more main quest variativity, better progression system and interesting story with hidden discoveries, albeit a bit short. If anyone reading this played the game and found the power armor rotary machinegun, please reply here.

WL3 was terrific. It is a tough call for me between 2 or 3, as 3 is the better and more complete game with much more to offer [and polish], but 2 [director's cut] has a more old-school feel, a more horror / desperate tone, feels more focused... I'm torn betwen 2[DC] / 3 the same way I am torn between F1 and F2.
