In this lesson, Rujeko teaches how to use a clock to practice dance steps. You'll get a real work-out when she moves into double-double time! For more on music and dancing, visit artsedge.kennedy-center.org.
I’m almost 70 years old and I have lost 8 stone 5 pounds and at my goal for almost 3 years I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis and I was in a wheelchair and now I walk miles and workout every day. This dance class is my favourite I love it it’s absolutely brilliant thank you so much Rujeko
Hey! I'm 30 and have osteonecrosis in my hips and knees and probably more joints. I was wondering how this affects (if it does) your knees? I see there's a slight bend in the knee and occasional squats here. I was wondering if you're able to take that strain? I'm on a wheelchair too, but I hope to start this when i recover, whenever that may be (or if lol hopefully)
I am 63 yrs old and I am going to start💃dancing African.. I love it... you and the talented young man playing the congas..I am Spanish so I still have some hip actions..thank you for helping and sharing your Beautiful culture with us. To be continued..God bless you all..PS...THE TWO YOUNG GUYS WERE PRETTY GREAT..YOU HAVE A GREAT TEACHER..❤🎶🎵🥁
I'm nearly 70 and haven't been dancing in about 10 years, though I did African dances from West Africa in my 30s. I started this and can only do 5 minutes before I'm breathing heavily. But I'll be doing it until I can do the whole routine. Love this, love your teaching methodology, and if I were still dancing, I'd dance over to the drummer and touch the ground in tribute. Ashe. Thank you for this. Perfection.
She is so cute and has the most beautiful giggle 😃 I will definitely include this routine into my exercise... and the drum guy is so happy to see her dancing African style! ❤
I am a teacher and this video is by far my favorite for teaching kids simple African Dance movements. The clock analogy is priceless with helping them keep the beat, remembering the clock and telling time but most importantly....having fun learning African Dance.
Think my phone can read my mind. I saw this video about 2 or more years ago and wanted to recreate it, for a long time for the children. Low and behold, here it is. I can't believe it. Guess what, I'm saving it this time. Thank you very much. 😍
At uni a white former classical ballerina got into African/Cuban type dance and gathered a troup of dancers who loved all these African inspired rhythms and just watching them enjoy dancing and all these unusual rhythms got me hooked too, and when invited to join in, I jumped at the opportunity. I had never experienced anything like this before. It felt like a nature force owns and commands your body, not you or your mind and the rhythm tells it what move to do next. It is very liberating, emotionally and, of course, keeps you very fit. I would have done it forever but, sadly, that troupe wandered around a lot and soon moved on. And there was nowhere to do this sort of dancing. With dance, I thought no you really do need to feel inspired and motivated by the music. Some dance music is just so boring and uninspiring. It needs a good rhythm, some sort of grace or excitement etc, whether it be fast or slow, traditional or modern. African music has very good rhythms and actually is the basis for our western rock style music, with its distinctive driving beat. I think it hot in via the earlier negro blues musicians descended from Africa, which then gave us jazz which eventually gave us the basis for earlier rock music styles. And, listening to some African music, I was surprised and how it sometimes sounded like our western jazz and rock styles, even though it was traditional African folkloric style music. It sounded strangely and pleasantly modern, though the songs and dances were very old ones passed down through tr ibal generations.
Thank you so much for making this. My husband and I just did this and it was a great way to start with the basics with your wonderful energy and clear guidance. Great fun - we’re off!,, 🙏🦋
Oh my goodness, this was so much fun! I can't believe I am sweating within five minutes! Love, love, love this segments, thank you so very much for posting them. I am a HUGE fan, and you have a great personality which makes these lessons fun! Please keep them coming!
You are a true teacher because you break down the steps slowly and then speed them up. I just went on a Salsa dance site that said it was beginner, but the instructor just assumed you knew how to do all the steps and then sped them up. Not good! So thank you! Fun dance...looking forward to more.
That all depends on the dance. as no one is naturally able to dance eveeyone is taught to dance from perants, tribes, tv or some where as no matter who u are or where u come from u are taught to dance.
Thank you very much beautiful Lady 🌹 The energy of the sun and nature comes from you! I really love African culture and God willing, I will learn to perform the dances of the peoples of Great Africa🌹With love from Moscow🇷🇺🌹🤗
Thank you SO much! I have a learning difficulty & everything about your dance video is a great help: the visual clock, your vocal direction of 'left to 6 ...etc'. & the two camera view are amazing! Best wishes to you.
I'm generally not into dancing, it feels uncomfortable. However, this was great and fun. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Rujeko. Hearts to you. :)
It is awesome ma'am.. I am from India working as a teacher. I wanted to introduce African dance to my students. This video is really helpful for me. I promise in next annual day, I will present the same. Thanks a lot..
Thank you. Excellent. i got to experience african dance as an 18 year old and have returned as a 62 year old. Have been unsure what areas of dance I learned. This is close...I remember many flat footed, flat hand pushing type movements
I LOVE IT!!!!!! One of my extracurriculars was AFRICAN DANCE and this is exactly how I trained a long time ago back in my academic school days at St. Augustine's. BRAVO GIRL Thumbs Up!!!!
Awesome African sauce!!!! LOL This was so much fun. I love the light hearted attitude of the instructor when she misses a step, she moves on without missing a beat on teaching.
I am going to draw the clock in my living and learn how to danse on my own while using this video as I guide. I am shy, but I think that I will be alright!
I just discovered you...You are just wonderful, congratulations! I love not only your wonderful system with the clock, which allows to follow you easier but your charming smile and clear way to explain the steps! Congratulations to your companions and to the percussionist! Thank your for sharing!
