Meant to say I like the new intro. 🙂 I like the short format, too, but I hope we haven’t seen the last of your longer episodes. You guys inspire me! 🥰

Love the small sessions. My mistake was I would get excited about pre-made covers. I always thought ‘I have a great story for that cover’, which wasn’t written. I now own 13 covers that I never used. 🤪😆

I know this pain too Teresa 😆 I justify it by telling myself I'll get stories written for them "one day" ! ~ Shar

Part B to geting professional editing: accept most of the editor’s suggested changes. BE a professional and don’t let feelings get in the way of improving your work.😎

I still see a couple channels telling first time authors to get their family and friends to review their books. I left a comment on channel 'life of a writer' saying not to do that and the channel owner removed my comment. She is still advising people to do this, then I see new authors complaining that their reviews are being removed and they wonder why. Or worse they get no more reviews and only have a small handful of 5 star reviews from relatives.

I've read family and friends can throw off the algorithm. I have no idea how that works. Family and friends aren't going to going to give you the proper feedback. Being an author means being professional. You should want a professional product before putting it out into the marketplace. Editing, formatting, cover design and the rest of it are vital. Good for you for pointing it out to the person giving bad advice. Those will be the ones saturating the market with bad books and giving indie authors a bad name.

@@agl5132 thank you. I think it's better to get honest and organic reviews from strangers. Readers who read your book and leave an honest opinion. I don't like to see people giving bad advice and getting inexperienced new authors in hot water.

You're both absolutely right - far better to get honest, independent reviews from genuine readers! ~ Shar

First mistake: Nope. I see it realistic. Second: I will DEFINETELY let it get edited. Mistakes happen and they need attention. Three: I will contact a freelance artist tell him what the book is about and let him PAINT my cover. Four: I am aiming for other people to read it. Nothing better than people who are actually LOOKING for your book genre than family and friends who get misleaded. Five: Thats how it works today. Mingeling with the stream of news landscape. Im a newbie, but not naive or.stupid. I guess another mistake newbies make is being very impatient. But I am someone who either gets it right the first time, while absorbing all the advice from as many authors I can get, or I will screw up. This has been a dream of mine when I was a kid. I lost that dream in the following 25 years and a literal dream set my inner author soul on fire. It gave me the idea and the urge to write it down RIGHTAWAY. Literally. And I dont, dont, dont want to screw this up by letting my ego or stupidity ruin it. And yes, after my first draft for my first book was done I started to write my second book righatway. And as soon as Im done with that, I will edit the first one. And after the first os published, I will start the third one. And so on.

AWESOME MINI SESSION 🤍 Great list of mistakes to avoid. What angle or hook would you recommend to use to attract subscribers when starting an email list before your book is published? It seems like it might be difficult to do without being a published author.

Clarice, we like the bonus giveaway in return for an email signup - something like a free prequel, or a glimpse inside the fictional world you're going to be publishing. It can be slow going at first, but well worth doing. Have a listen/watch of our Bookfunnel episode with Damon Courtney www.selfpublishingauthorspodcast.com/spa-girls-podcast-ep424-bookfunnel-tips-for-authors/ ~ Shar x
