Just discovered your videos they're great,my mam was from Northumberland, and my daughter lives in Gateshead I visited her in September and was blown away by how nice, everything and everyone was a beautiful city and such friendly people. I will share your videos with my daughter
Eddie, you're the David Starkey of Newcastle history! I didnt know this stuff so please keep it up. I think that you should wear a morta board in future videos as a demonstration of you academic Geordie knowledge.
Interesting Eddy, I've learnt a few things from the latest 2 I've watched. Great to bring up Tiffany's unfortunately I knew it as the "Oxford" before that. Great Times, we used to parade around the upper balcony. 😊
Class, again!! Am proud to be Geordie from Benwell but I learn from this...I used to gan to Tiffany's 😀I tell everyone ootside the Toon aboot the Toon moor and they don't believe me so will share your ace video with them!! Keep them coming Eddy
NGL i'm a Teessider studying in newcastle and have been here for 3 years, i would of never knew this stuff without you, great content really enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!
As someone who's not from the North East but lived here for 26 years I've always been interested in the history of Newcastle / North East, I knew some of the stuff you've mentioned but you've certainly added to that. Great video's keep them up, really enjoying them.
Watch till the end…Father Christmas was obviously a Geordie too!! 🎅🏼 😀 I’m proud to be a Geordie and love our city for lots of reasons….you keep giving me more and more reasons! Great content on your channel, your research and delivery is much appreciated!
Something I've never considered until I watched this video, with you discussing the town moor being protected land. As diesel engines etc are being phased out, I wonder how it will affect the the Hoppings and travelling fares in particular?
Really enjoyed these history video's keep up the good work. A video showing the many vinyl record stores & venues in Newcastle would be great as the city is also famous for its music scene
Just discovered your channel and have enjoyed the videos I've seen so far and look forward to going through your back catalogue. I hope you do more of these videos and in time expand across the whole north east area. Living not too far over the other side of the wall, its an easy option for a wee short stay and I try and visit some part of the area at least once a year. Also great to see the much maligned T Dan Smith get a mention, an interesting character I learned about from watching the great Our Friends In The North. Keep up the good work and all the best.
hey eddie i told you about the gateshead queys arena! a few weeks later i hear about it in your vid. what a great guy and youtuber you are, really enjoyed this.
It great listening to your videos. I must be the same age as you as I went to the Tiffanys under 18 discos. I also joined the RAF but I was sent to Gibraltar for three years in the early 90's unlike you going to Hong Kong then. I'm sure our paths must have crossed more than once 🙂
I remember this, Eddy. I wasn't promoting your channel earlier. Haven't really paid attention to the social media for the most part for most of a decade 2013-2023.
Discovered your channel last night, as you know from our chat about the angel this morning. Really enjoyed these two history vlogs, which I have to say, you have researched well. Not really into football that much so I’ll most likely skip those but looking forward to hearing more about the history of the North East so I hope you can tolerate another subscriber tagging along.
I just love these videos, keep being original and yourself, no need for a script! One of my favourite parts is the information you shared in a previous video on the Bigg Market and the detail that went into renovating the whole square with the barley and all 🙂 It’s also great to learn about any future plans and developments!
Hi Eddy. Just a quick reply to say thanks for these videos. Really fascinating to hear more about the history of our city. I’ve also went back and watched some of your older videos, which are equally as interesting. Thanks for being so candid in them.
Oh wow! I feel a bit embarrassed about those now and although I’m still on a steep learning curve, I cringe at those now 😅 Glad you’re enjoying the content 👊🏻
Wow Ed so much information there man .I really enjoyed that ,your a natural in front of the camera.Excellent vid mate ,your like a roving reporter.Keep them coming .Fancy a win on saturday?
Loving these videos mate. My grandad used to walk me around Newcastle as a kid telling me of all the history, he was the caretaker at the old Newgate shopping centre. Theres a nice bit of the old city wall just along from there near that big art deco building, I forget the name
Feel like I’m back home while I sit here watching! ( that’s pretty special as I left Geordie-Land more years ago than I want to mention, typical woman stuff!! ) The changes are Astounding, I’d never know where I was if I visited again, so it’s just the ticket taking a long distance nosey. Love it 😍 👍🏼 💖
@@TynesideLife I’m loving every single minute ! From being born in the General Hospital, way back …till leaving in my early teens, the thoughts are flooding back. I must share these with my family and friends, there’s never a dull moment in a Geordie household, they’ll really get the stotties oot wi this un ! 🎄🎅🏼🎄👌🏼
@@christinethornhill haha! Brilliant! Where are you living now? I’m actually out in Newcastle today filming for another video about what people love about Newcastle 😃
@@TynesideLife At the moment I’m in Suffolk, but have traveled many a Mile before settling ! ( still helping my South Korean son- in - law to translate our special ‘sayings’ , he loves them ! ) Looking forward to your next episode 😊
Cheers Archie 👍🏻 I’ve got two and love them to bits. James I links in nicely to my story about Charles I in the Part I video. It’s all fascinating stuff 👍🏻
Do well bonny lad, I'm a Geordie by blood and I love all the history of Newcastle good and bad it's all part of my heritage and I've learnt thing's I didn't know thank you.
I’m not suggesting they didn’t. My point was that a kind of ‘Geordie Mania’ swept the nation during those years I mention, that hadn’t been seen before. Also it ignited a fierce local pride that had rarely been seen. Just my opinion Thanks for reaching out 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife I've been to Jesmond many times (wife is from there) and I always wondered what that huge piece of natural moorland was doing in the middle of the City. Well, now I know. Cheers!!
Another enjoyable video on our great city although I'm perhaps one of the few Geordies that doesn't care much for the night life and the drink. :) Well done. :)
Born in Benwell, Strathmore Cres. I reckon that makes me a Geordie....... Lived in Scotland for 28yrs but hey ho, gotta go out there and teach all nations
More great content Eddie, I like that you recap the essential points before moving on - it helps with understanding. What about digging a big hole at St James's to put the stadium in, when you go through the turnstile you would be in the upper tier and make your way down to your seat? Onwards and Upwards.
Cheers Peter 👊🏻 I’m not a structural engineer or architect but I can’t see how the trigonometry would allow that without expanding the outside area of the stands. I’ve covered this in other videos and it would appear a non starter
Earned a sub lad, born in Gateshead and have lived in North East my whole life, so great stuff to hear about the history of one of my favourite places. Side note I will have to ask him but I think my da went to that club
Brilliant videos love but a little bit of history I learnt on a recent Nufc stadium tour apparently some of the witches they were hung on the Town Moor were actually buried under the pitch at St James Park obviously long before things we're developed around that area ,keep up the great work
6:40 used to go there with my mate do admire the graffiti and walk along that walkway all the time and its pretty cool how there is some history about it, this channel is amazing
Hi Eddie I hope your well, I was born in Kettering but raised in Gateshead from the age of 3. I always find your videos very interesting, my Mam was born in Shieldfield, I just wondered about the history from around that part of the city. A little information would be much appreciated. Many thanks
Best to try and increase the capacity of the Gallowgate end I'm sure I've read it could increase to 60k for the stadium. It's unique in the city where it is and personally I want to stay at SJP
It can’t be extended unfortunately. I’ve done a couple of videos on this topic and you may like to check out my ‘St James’ Redevelopment’ video. In fact the stadium can’t be extended at all, without a significant rebuild. I hope we stay too. It just needs a clean up and capacity will increase when we have designated standing areas. Thanks for your message👊🏻
@@geegee3826 the Gallowgate can’t be extended as there’s no land to extend it onto. I’ve had a few suggestions about lowering the pitch but it was explained to me by an architect that to lower the pitch you would need the extra trigonometry angle by extending the stands out. Again, back to the same problem 🤷🏻♂️
Always remember my grandad.. called George being referred to as Alreet geordie. Great vid loving the channel Any thoughts on visiting more local areas ? Old mining towns even in North Durham etc ?
Glad you’re enjoying them bud 👍🏻 I am planning on doing more videos on other areas of Tyneside and there’s so many places to do so maybe later in the year I can hopefully spread out a bit 👍🏻
Hi Justin, have you see my video I did about South Shields? I can’t remember if I covered this but I did do some research and I could only find 2 or 3 half baked theories. Maybe I’ll do a bit more digging and do a video about things we probably don’t know about in South Tyneside 👊🏻
The name Sandancer originally came from the influx of foreign workers in the late 19th century. Seaman from the Far East would stay in South Shields awaiting work on the ships as stokers. Many boarding homes wouldn’t take them so there would gather on the beaches in makeshift tents living there until work was available. At night they would sing and dance there traditional songs around there camp fires. The locals started to call the them sandancers, it’s sort of stuck with people coming from South Shields mainly as a derogatory term used by peoples from Newcastle.
@@zulu3621 that’s one theory. I’ve also read about the process of removing lumps from sand with their feet that was later transported to a nearby glass factory (back in the day). I’ve heard this from local town folk too 🤷🏻♂️ I couldn’t find anything definitive, unless you can point me to the historical reference you’re referring to? It’s all very interesting stuff! 👊🏻
@@TynesideLife This story was passed down from my great grandfather who lived and worked in South Shields back in those days . He said he remembers the men of the town would go down to the beach to sell them alcohol even though most of them were Muslims and they referred to them as the Sandancers. I don’t think your going to find and literal evidence anywhere as these where just local events.
@@zulu3621 fascinating stuff! It sounds very plausible that this could be the origin of the term and I’m certainly not in a position to say it’s not. I’m not in a position in a video to state as fact though either, as there are 1 or 2 other plausible origins. I’ll keep digging to see if I can corroborate it. Thanks for sharing this Malcolm 👊🏻
Try that again, fat fingers. We were talking about the St. James' extension and thinking laws were there to be changed with doing back so many years. I know when you did the video with Adam that the light issue at the Leasses Terrace stop that stand from being build up. Just hope that can change in time and possibly be the answer. More pressing issues are a win tomorrow, here's hoping.
Great message Ian cheers. Personally, I can’t identify any wriggle room that wouldn’t cost a fortune and a very long time to sort out. Having said that, I’m not on authority on the matter, I’m just piecing together the evidence as it stands and presenting the likely outcome. The capacity can increase when standing is allowed in certain sections. Other than that, unless they build 4/5 miles outside the city centre, I think we’ll stick with what we’ve got. The city centre stadium is integral to the community and the local economy.
Being part of "Geordie Folklore" My mother used to babysit Alan Hull of Lindisfarne fame my mothers brother gave Jimmy Bradford his name Jimmy Nail ! And Mary Bell knocked on my mothers door when I was a bairn to take me for a walk! How lucky was I ?
Another belta 👍 Was that bloke who built the walkway the same guy who knocked down a bunch of listed buildings to errect eldon Square around the green next to monument?
He he was. He also knocked down some slum areas and built the high rise flats. I knew he’d cleared the way for Eldon Square to be built but there must have been some high level permission granted in order to knock down listed buildings. It’s something I haven’t researched yet but I will and maybe mention it in a future video 👍🏻
Mad fact for you regarding T Dan Smith, the Amber Films production; T Dan SMITH: A funny thing happened on the way to Utopia DOCU/DRAMA co-starred my best mate and another friend at school, Paul Heslop and Lee Ross. He Got £50 odd quid for it in about 1985/6 ish.... we got hammered on Olde English cider for a fortnight.... I fricken hated cider, but it was a poond a bottle, and you got 10 pence back for the empty lololol ................... By the way Eddie, on TTR tonight you got plugged left ,right and centre, I brought up the mackem vid up and everyone joined in saying how great your vids are, expect a few subs in the next few days. Also, yes defo do those walks, there's a million mysteries in our wonderful city, and surrounding areas. I'd love you to do a vid on some of our film stars like Stan Laurel and Alan Young from Mr Ed (the talking horse, both brought up in my home town, North Shields), I'm a friend of a Professor of Nottingham University that has wrote numerous books on Stan Laurel and his family (born in Ulverston), but came to Shields aged 6 months and left at about 15 to be Charlie Chaplin's understudy in Scotland before they travelled together to the States. Locals would love to find out about some of those stories.
Neil, you’re a mine of brilliant information and stories! Thanks for letting me know about the TTR and bringing up my Mackem Video 🙏🏻 I’m actually planning to do a video soon about North Shields and Tynemouth. I never knew Stan Laurel spent his childhood in NS so I’ll add that thank you!
@@TynesideLife You've got my email address, I've tonnes of info on Shields and Tynemouth. I'll keep it to emails so no spoilers for your followers. ........ and not kidding about TTR, I'll watch it again and let you know the times you were mentioned to save you watching the whole thing.
Check your email's I've got some GREAT news for you regarding Stan Laurel. Probably the most knowledgeable man in the world on Stan Laurel and North Tyneside history is happy to help. 👌
Eddy, I have heard he Oxford (Tiffany's) is going to be regenerated. Any news on that front? Also, the Oxford was the home of architect; John Dobson, who designed it.
Great stuff. Why not build the new Toon stadium in Durham? According the aweful Roger Whittaker song, "Durham Town", Durham stands by the Tyne. I think he needed to check his map. To any non geographers, Durham stands by the River Wear, and is 18 miles south of Newcastle. Joking aside, I love your Border Collie. Great dog. He wanted you to crack on with your walk on the Town Moor, and not mess with video recording.
Love history myself mate and it’s so interesting to learn about the history of the north east !! A curious connection to Ireland, the Northumberland fusiliers were originally formed as a battalion in king William of oranges army for the battle of the boyne in the 1690 in Ireland, a very famous battle at that still celebrated to this day . It’s a great tour to do just outside Dublin , about 30 minutes drive and can head on to Belfast if you wish ! I wasn’t aware of the connection til I read up on the Tyneside Irish brigade of the First World War and how far back the Northumberland fusiliers date back to 😃
