00:08 OK today, I am going to be showing you the
00:09 five most common problems with vertical blinds
00:13 one of the most common problems
00:16 is simply a blind slat being out of step
00:19 something as simple as this
00:21 where it is just going to hang up
00:22 and now your blinds are not going to turn and open up so first thing is your going to want to
00:27 go along and make sure
00:29 that all of your blinds are in a row and
00:32 that's one of the most common problems.
00:35 Another most common problem is a
00:38 broken blind slat itself
00:39 often they will break off right here
00:42 and
00:43 what you can do is flip your blind slat over
00:46 and use a holes punch and punch some new holes
00:48 and than re hang it up. If you want to you can trim it off straight or you can get
00:52 replacement slats and trim them down. I have a video on
00:57 those repairs, video on that repair and I will try to put the link on this video so you can click over to it.
01:02 The Third most often repair that's needed
01:05 is a stripped master gear now as I
showed you if one of the deals was hanging up or the blinds
01:09 were hanging up
01:10 and someone continued to try to force it
01:14 it can strip the master gear
01:16 And there is a couple of different types of
master gears this one is a
01:19 self aligning master gear
01:21 it links underneath the first slat
01:25 this one you can take out these screws
and link it to the first carrier
01:30 I've got a video on that also so I will try to put the link on here.
01:35 Fourth most common type of repair that is needed
01:36 is where you have an individual blind that is not turning
01:39 all the other ones are turning just fine
01:42 and that one individual
01:43 blind is not turning
01:46 what's needed is either the
01:48 head the uh... the gear here
01:50 has got some broken teeth on it
01:52 or the comb gear itself
01:55 has broken off
01:56 and these can be replaced.
01:58 I also have a video on that
02:00 I will put the link on this video it is for the stem
02:03 and comb gear.
02:05 And the Fifth most common problem with
02:07 vertical blinds
02:08 is that the blinds are hard to open. Now, this one is not so bad, it slides pretty easy, but if you had a set that was hard to open
02:18 what you want to do is lube it with silicone spray.
02:20 Apply it to the entire length inside the track.
02:24 And it is not the best smelling stuff in the world but it really does a good job in lubing the blinds
02:29 because what it does silicone lube dries
02:32 and it still maintains its lubricant qualities
02:35 and because it dries it is not going to collect as much dust and dirt and debris
02:39 and than clog up. Anyway once you put it on go ahead and work the blinds in
02:47 and you are good to go.
02:49 And that is the five most common problems with vertical blinds.
02:52 There's a few others.
02:53 I will try to add them on later but
02:56 that's about the five most common.

The material ones are very expensive. Mine were dirty and off-white so I just painted them right on the rail. Not as much of a pain as I imagined.

A common hole puncher (for paper) works fine for creating a new hole to attach blind. Easily re-sized to others with a pair of scissors.

If you do a quick RU-vid search "Master Blind Gear Kung Fu Maintenance" It should come up. You may not need to replace the master gear however. Sometimes you can gently click each and every individual stem over a notch (or two if needed) to get full closure as shown in my other video "How To Repair Vertical Blinds Stems Or Slats Out Of Step Kung Fu Maintenance Style". Unfortunately sometimes individual stem gears do break but if the blinds are not working anyway it is probably worth the risk.

My problem is a gap when you slide the blinds closed. I can see outside and people can see inside through that gap. The blinds are pulled all the way but there is a 3 to 4 inch gap between the wall and the blinds. What can I use to cover that gap?

I agree! I hate hate these blinds. Ugh. I have them in my apartment and one day I closed the blinds and 5 fell off. 🙄. I guess I'm going to try the hole puncher or the Amazon kit.

Thanks for the video. I have a problem that if pull the string to move it from left to right, every thing goes fine but the last 3 blinds could not move (the string is hard to pull anymore). I looked it carefully, the first one which stop move actually moves quarter of a inch, hand could move it easily but only within the quarter of a inch range. (Other than that, everything else seems fine.)

Hello, First Thanks for the video Now I know the names of everything. Second please try to focus..I can't see the heads you are talking about. And 3rd. I need to change the orientation of the blind. Mine opens to the left..and the window opens to the right so if it ' s windy It will end with all my blinds flying away and broke and I am tired to replace them.

I found out that each blind holder had popped off the track completely on the side closest to the window and the weight/pressure was all on the gear-rod! I only discovered it after breaking out some silicone spray to lube it up. Works great now.

What about the chain that controls opening and closing of the slats? Our chain is now longer at one end than the other and we cannot open the blinds

Just moved into a new apartment and of course one room has vertical blinds. They work OK., but a few of the slats seem slightly out of alignment and therefore don't close entirely. There are no missing slats. Anyone with ideas how to get slats to 'straighten up' ? Thank you!

Alrighty, I hope I get some advice.. BUT I live in sunny Queensland! and well I went to soak the blinds in the bathtub with some detergent and bicarb and vinegar, I am not sure what was happening but all points to some form of Oxidation and it is the sun doing it. When I soaked the blinds white stuff was coming off the blinds and turning them white, I have googled and asked everyone possible to let me know if I should continue soaking or not.. I am not sure what they are made of but they feel sort of plastic so possibly polyester type thing.

My question... The chain on my vertical blinds slips, not turning the blinds.. Feels like the chain slips on the sprocket... Like a chain on a bike... Master gear for chain? How is that replaced?

+Ben O There are several different types of chained vertical blinds. I have a few videos showing resetting the chain slso a few vids showing how to convert the chain to a wand control. Most chained vertical blind control replacement procedure is somewhat as follows. Unscrew the end cap where the control is. Slide out the old control. Lift off the chain. Set the chain on the new control and slip into the headrail. Reset the end bracket. Secure and test.

I was just told by the repairmen from the vertical blinds company come "fix" my blinds and told me that the "head rail is bent" and the cause as to why something fell off the track and thus, cause the vertical blinds to only run down half way and get stuck. The repairmen said he wasn't sure how a head rail could get bent but that it would have to eventually need to be replaced. The repairmen was contracted my landlord and so I believe that the repairmen was purposely refraining from answering my questions.... I just want to know the truth, how does a head rail get bent? is it from forceful motion? or was it from wear and tear? or was it potentially installed crooked? PLEASE HELP

Vertical blinds because they are so long often get bent during shipping. When I order them I usually order two of them together so that when they package it the package is a bit bulkier and helps lend support so that they are less likely to get bent.

That makes sense. So it is likely what happen then. In your professional experience, it that a pretty common re-occurance more so than it being bent by simply pulling it back and forth to open and close? The vertical blinds aren't even a year old and I am petite women who doesn't mishandle any objects.

Yes happens during shipping often. Less often during installation but is possible. Really not at all from regular use unless there are items in the way. Sometimes a small ding or bend does not show up that much. Just a small hickup during use. But eventually that hanging up causes the parts to wear out and fail. Sometimes the carriers break connections or sometimes the end caps break out. Sometimes if someone has decorations or furniture that block or get tangled up in the blinds that could cause breakage during operation.

Good video. Where is your video about replacing the master gear ? I have a set of vertical blinds with the wand to open/close. They open/close fine about 80% of the way from side to side, but the last 20% it starts popping and wont' close any further. Do I need to replace the master gear?

Our BIG issue occurred when we bought new windows and got tilt and turn. A roller bling DOESN'T work with tilt and turn windows. 😭😭😭😭

Problem:. Mine have a string that opens and closes them. They open easier than they close, but both directions are binding all of a sudden. They worked great and then something with the string seems to bind. Lube doesn't solve the problem.

We have had vertical blinds in a lot of places we've lived in but it's the first time we've encountered constant dirt particles falling onto the window ledge every time the blinds get opened or closed. I have tried vacuuming and dusting the gear several times a day but to no avail. Please, can you give me any advice how to stop this from happening before it drives me insane...

If you have to replace those thingy's you talked about, the main gear that opens and shuts and the gears that turn each slat (I have both problems to fix), is it pretty easy to do, or do you need someone who really knows what they're doing? I haven't watched the other videos yet.

i have the problem of 5 of the running carriages not parting so 5 of the blinds are bunched together, i have the string pull type,slimline rail. any sugestions?

stilletoe Sounds like one of the carriers has come unlinked from the others. The linkage can sometimes be reset though not always. Sometimes you can devise a creative way to tie or link the carrier to the last moving carrier so that things still perform as desired.

My buddy's vertical blinds stick/snag in the middle when pulling them all the way open to the left. Just silicone spray to lube it? Anything else?

Silicone spray should do it. Sometimes you will need to examine the head rail. Longer head rails sometimes get bent or nicked in shipping. Sometimes all it takes is a slight squeeze in the right area of an all the way opened blind set to remedy a bent head rail. Sometimes a slight unbending with pliers. I would carefully examine the place where the hang up is occurring and act accordingly. If nothing is visible. Silicone spray ought to do it or at least improve the operation.

Although this is an old video, I'll risk it and ask my question as I see you (the video maker) are very knowledgeable on vertical blinds. I have a set that I removed from an older business. They are quite new and I would like to use them now in my new office. I have to cut the slats which isn't a problem but - here my question- is it possible to find a system that fits my blinds with new wall / window measures? Does this system need to be made specially for my blinds with the new measures or is there in the market a kind of cheap standard that could be used? Thanks for your assistance.

Sometimes you can somewhat bend them back but most times you just need a new blind wand.

Too bad you did not show how to fix rollers that slip off the track. When this happens it makes sliding open or closed very difficult. Instead of the rollers rolling on the track the rollers have slipped downward a tiny bit and are rubbing along the edge of the track creating a lot of friction. This is common in cheap blinds using flimsy materials for construction that bend or warp easily, usually near the middle of a long track and can be temporarily corrected by pushing up on each roller assembly to pop it back into place. This will have to be done for each roller not in place. At this time I have no idea how to prevent rollers from coming off the tracks other than replacing key parts of the blind. Replacing parts may be more costly in terms of time and money than simply purchasing a new blind made of stronger materials. Note: Cheap blinds also commonly have problems with vinyl shades breaking at the attachment tabs and falling off due to weakening from bad batches of vinyl they are manufactured from. I have seen this several times with some Chinese blind manufacturers.

My blinds got miffed somehow and a piece flew off the end, the track came down, and it took everything I had to keep them all from sliding out of the track frame. But I was able to keep it all together, stuck the pieces back on the ends, etc., and ever since they don't slide smoothly at all (have to hold the actual gear box and push/pull it from there to slide them), and you have to really crank the gear box with a lot of torque to open and close them now... like with both hands... and there's a whole lot of creaking and crackling going on every time. I can't for the life of me figure out what went wrong, what could possibly be missing, etc. All the parts are accounted for as far as I can tell, and nothing is bent. Any ideas?

108's Computing It's likely the end cap or guide was put in or on upside down. This would put extra pressure on the center gear and give the symptoms you described.

I have a problem with some new vertical blinds I just had installed. They all turn just fine, I have no issues with one going out of line or anything, but at the furthest point I can go to close the blinds (I have the balled-string type hanging string one rather than the twist turn), the blinds are not fully closed. There is a gap of about a few millimeters. From an angle you can still see through them outside (same applies looking in from outside at an angle). The string is at its end and won't go anymore to cover at that few millimeters of gap. Suggestions?

If you had them installed perhaps there is a warranty of some kind. I'm not sure I fully understand the question. Is it that all the blinds won't rotate all the way closed or that the blinds won't slide all the way closed? If it is slide and they are outside mount blinds you can just slide the whole head rail over a little bit to get full window coverage. If inside mount you may need to re position the back anchoring clip to get a little more reach. If they are not fully rotating closed you might check my vids on chained blinds (Chainage). Sometimes the chain needs to be re positioned as when the clip is too close to the gear so you can't get full rotation.

For stringed blinds that open one direction the knots are usually one on either side of the front carrier. Sometimes the length of the string can be adjusted for desired closure. A bit tricky.

Very Tedious and Time Consuming. I have Levolor Blinds and We had to adjust Each steam gear. I will have a problem with Levolor if we have to do this Often. I was Not Told this when I bought these Blinds and had them professionally installed that I would have to do maintenance on them.

Why people have these in their homes I don't know - they are awful unless you want an 80's office look, Save up and get shutters instead - more expensive but far classier and never date.

+abhard6 Vertical blinds are beneficial to dust allergy sufferers. The vertical vanes that have smooth surfaces, not a fancy embossed finish, collect less dust than shutters, vertical blinds, or fabric draperies.

+abhard6 Yes but shutters are bulky and are almost a wall with shutters it seems like all you need is drywall and you have a wall. Plus they are heavy.

dude you have some decent material on here. but holy cow, please have you ever tried watching it on even a modest size tv with a decent sound system? you're opening music is horrible, way to loud, and unnecessary.That I could get past , then YOU CAN'T HEAD YOU unless you crank the volume. all you hear are the blinds. please if you want to be of some real help. update these with a decent camera and do some audio work
