Stumpy, you are perhaps the best instructional woodworking channel on RU-vid. I love your no-nonsense tutorials and they are helping me VERY much in my shop. Thank you!

James, on the Rockler bench wheels, I bolted a piece of square tubing between the wheel lifts, it makes it much easier to get the bench up on the wheels and to release them. I saw a video on RU-vid where someone did this, I don't remember who it was.

Hi James. If you bolt a piece of 3/4 X 3/4 square steel tube stock between the tab ends of the flip-up casters, you have a handy step bar that allows you to raise and lower each side with one motion, and the weight of the bar keeps it out away from the leg, making it easier to step on to raise and lower the bench.

The mobile bases are great! I have a very small shop. To cut full sheet material before the mobile base was very hard if not impossible. Now I can roll my saw onto my patio and I have ample space to make safe cuts! Plus it allows me to make better use of my limited square footage!!

This is the first video of yours I've seen and am impressed with your tool collection behind you in your wall/cabinets. I recognize many of the planes, saws and chisels from Dad's shop/collection but your's are substantially larger in number. Very impressive. I did also like your review of mobile bases, thanks for sharing.

For your workbench casters, I've seen some guys attach a bar between the two on each end of the bench, so they can flip up or down the caster with one move.

The Laser Pyrometer is excellent for checking the alignment of your vehicle's suspension, if the inside edges of your tires are hotter than the outside then you have too much negative camber, conversely if the outside edge is hotter then you have too much positive camber. In addition, if your tires are overinflated then the center of your tires will be hotter than both edges.

THIS COMMENTARY IS A MUST READ FOR ALL WHO ARE IN THE MARKET TO PURCHASE MOBILE BASES ! The main issue with most all mobile bases on the market is that they have two fixed wheels and two swiveling wheels, which makes for better control in steering, and that's great if you have room to steer, that is. Having all four wheels swivel is actually better in most shops where space is limited . Most all woodworkers I know have smaller shops and it's frustrating when you want to use one tool , and have to move the other tools out of the way and can't because you don't have enough room to maneuver because of the two fixed wheels. Having all four wheels swivel makes it easy to push the machinery a few inches or feet in any direction so you can have enough room to operate the one you want to use safely and easily. This is why most all the mobile bases in my shop are made by me, since there aren't any on the market designed to accommodate four wheels that swivel. And I agree the larger wheels are better for rolling over chords, cracks , mats etc. All my mobile bases have double locking wheels also which largely prevents the small movement you mentioned on some locking wheels.
@PENNA65000
@PENNA65000 4 месяца назад
How true. There are a few solutions to this issue. Grizzly makes a 4-wheel base where all 4 wheels rotate 360 degrees. Another option is to buy 2 of the bases and then use the parts with full wheel rotation (pricey but it gets the job done -- now .... what to do with the 4 non rotating wheels?!) I much prefer the locking mechanisms that don't use the side action to lock but rather the top-0f-the-wheel lockiing action. Side action ones are difficult and not always effective. Most top action ones also lock both rotations - the wheel AND the ball bearing lateral rotation. That solves the 'sloppiness' James references in this video.

Have you heard any feedback of someone using the second HD mobile base and tbar extension with the sawstop and 36" and larger extension?

Are you aware of any mobile bases that would give 3.5” of clearance? I store my tools inside but have to use them in the backyard so I have to go over the threshold of a sliding glass door. I tried strapping my bandsaw to a hand truck, but that didn’t work well. Love these videos!

👍Thanks for the recommendation, I will watch Carls vidio after this Frank. My two cents worth is most of us watching this are maker woodworkers, so why not just buy the castor wheels separately (the're pretty cheap) and build the base to our own exact spec.

Surprised you didn't cover the Harbor Freight mobile kit, since you supply your own wooden rails, it is among the most cost effective. And it does have a stationary setting that seems to work well, and then there's coupons 😊
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 6 лет назад
The Harbor Freight one isn't all that unique, which was our focus in this video. The ones we showed are unique, one for it's ability to roll over stuff, the other for it's strength and expand-ability.
@sgf13
@sgf13 6 лет назад
I think the downside to the harbor freight models, at least to me, are that they have thumb screws instead of locking levers that you can use your foot on instead of getting down on your knees or bending over to turn the screws.

Thanks for this review. A few notes from an overseas woodworker, if I may: I'm not a fan of mobile bases because they're heavy and cost too much to ship. Today's shipping fees from the US are often more than whatever it is I'm buying. Rockler still ships overseas but can be expensive. Many companies like McMaster-Carr don't ship overseas at all (hint-hint M-C). Also, my shop is very small so I don't like casters that stick out and get in the way of my feet. Very dangerous and stubbing my toes while I'm working is not fun. I therefore prefer DIY retractable casters of the kind often seen in YT videos. The better ones are easy to make, stay out of the way when in use or not and allow the tool to stand on its own feet like it should.

James... I am contemplating putting a mobile base on my band saw. It is the Harvey Ambassador, and because of it's small footprint, I wonder about stability issues. Know that you have a Harvey and would appreciate any thoughts you have.
@NomoreAB
@NomoreAB Год назад
I have one as well and bought their mobile base. Instead of a 3/4” piece of plywood I incorporated the brackets into a 2x6 base with lap joints. I used the threaded anchor points in the bandsaw base to tie the saw, 2x6 base and brackets together. This minimizes the base and the machine does not slide around on the mobile base. If you like I can send pictures later
@twain3074
@twain3074 Год назад
@@NomoreAB ... yours is the first response I ever got to this post, so thanks for that. what I ended up doing was buying the Bora Portamate Mobile Base PM-3550 Industrial Strength with Swivel Wheels. not the least expensive solution, but it perfectly stable, and allows me to waltz my band saw wherever I like (within distance of the 220 outlet).

How does the "Shopfox" mobile base fare? I'm curious because I can get a good deal on them
@AutoClubResearch
@AutoClubResearch 6 лет назад
Terry Leigh I bought the Shop Fox for my Grizzly bandsaw a number of years ago, and one of the fixed tires came apart. I was able to find a replacement tire at a local tool store called Mr. Stuff. I think it cost me about 2 bucks. I only roll it across a smooth garage floor and a smooth concrete driveway, and it seems to work okay although it doesn't get moved very far each time.
@tekanger975
@tekanger975 5 лет назад
Love the videos. I must add that the laser "gun" does not read all surfaces accurately. It does a good job on most, but there are a few that almost completely mystify the gadget. I use mine a lot and certainly would replace it if ever lost. The "problem" I had was that it would not read the temperature of my gas grill cover accurately; however the grill cover (lid) has a thermometer, so it is really not a problem. If it won't work on the gas grill cover, I suspect there are other things that will confuse it as well. It does read the cooking surfaces accurately. It will read the cover of the charcoal grill accurately as well; just seems to dislike the highly polished and painted cover of the gas grill. Not much of a criticism overall, just something to be aware of.

That second mobile base looks very like the one that came with my Axminster tablesaw. It’s strong for sure. But I don’t like how wobbly the feet are when in stationary mode. There is too much slop to justify the price. It’s ironic considering the apparent solid design in every other aspect.

the 2 wheel sheet carrier (panel cart for the posh) for me the wheels are to small, for some reason they design them to use in doors, when most sheets are carried from the car/van/bike/lorry/donkey/elephant/child/dog/dragon/mother in law in to the building. BIGGER WHEELS FOR ALL.....what do we want....."BIGGER WHEELS...when do we want um..."well i bought mine all ready so it's to late" 8(
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 6 лет назад
Not sure what you're dealing with, but as you saw in the video, it worked just fine on the unpaved driveway. The key is to take a little of the weight off the front wheel, which is also how it's intended to be steered.
