Making a Heavy Duty Mobile Base
Build Article: bit.ly/2WXhvnS
I work in a relatively small space so I keep most of my tools pushed up against the wall when they aren't being used. I had recently gotten this table saw from a guy closing his shop and the base that came with it had limited mobility. This made it difficult to move the saw freely around the shop.
I had recently purchased a new Powermatic jointer and ran into the same issue so I had decided to weld my own base. This video is showing the same process I took for that base but on a smaller scale to accommodate the table saw.
This was one of my first welding projects and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to incorporating metal and other mediums into my future builds.

Helpful Hint. When you dont have gas, You MUST drag the torch not push. "If you have slag, you must drag" ...Nice Design.

I've done the same kind of base for my 350 kg SAMCO combined jointer-table saw, just a little bigger and heavier than yours. I've used automotive body filler too, but I closed the square holes of the iron profiles with polystyrene plugs and then used body filler to homogenize everything. Nice building btw , will serve you great for sure 💪🏽

Good job. I like the low profile design and will probably do this lowered shape on my future rolling projects. On a safety not, It's a little hard to tell in the video but it looks like those casters were zinc plated. It's best to grind that off the surface before welding as it both messes with the quality of the weld and produces zinc oxide fumes that are highly toxic.

Hey mate, first time viewer, enjoyed the whole process and the OCD part using body filler 😜, subbed from Tinonee AU

Your base and small shop ideas are great. As a construction worker for over 35 years and a father of 4 adult boys, I would advise you to wear a proper respirator for painting especially in an enclosed area. The one you are wearing is for dusts and does not stop the fumes.

Thank you! I appreciate the advice. I've since switched over to the canister type filters when painting.

It is always after the fact. When you are young you feel indestructible and don’t feel the need to use knee pads, hearing protection, lung protection, be cause I quit smoking very early I thought I was doing well... then the knees went, the back went, and now asthma and Tinnitus wish someone would have warned me then ...did not have a dad who was there for me. My boys (men now) did not have that problem. Btw could you send pics of your shop cabs?

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure how to send pictures of them through here, but I basically combined two miter saw stations. I followed Jay Bates' design for the top, and Bob Clagetts' for the bottom. That way I could still have storage on top but also wheel things underneath. I've linked both of their videos here. Hope this helps! What size did u use for the steel and thickness? I just picked up the same table saw and this is a great idea
@thespaltydog1039
@thespaltydog1039 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply! I used 1.5" x 3" with .125" wall thickness.

Nice job. Do the casters lock solid when using the saw, or do you get a bit of a wiggle? I'd like to do this for my 8" jointer
@thespaltydog1039
@thespaltydog1039 4 года назад
Thanks! Yeah, they will lock in place. I normally don't lock them though because there usually isn't enough force being pressed into the machine to make it wiggle. Especially for the jointer, that thing is so heavy. Lol

You can get swivel castors that lock in all directions,( rolling and swivel ) makes a huge difference.

I experienced scary cases where locking casters caused the machine to twist or move while I operated it, a dangerous situation. Rather use lifting casters like you can see in the video in the background on one of the work benches. When the casters are lifted, the machine stands on the base directly on the floor, so it helps against vibration, too. Push down on the levers to lift the machine and move it around. You weld the caster mount bar vertically instead of horizontally. Otherwise the base design is the same. I now have three Jet machines on such bases with lifting casters. I found that machines above 100kg will benefit from adding gas struts to ease the lifter movement. Look at Laguna's bases for inspiration. Not sure though if this design will hold when you move to machines in the 300kg to 700 kg range.

I have very heavy cast iron woodworking tools, and mobile bases are looking to be $120 each. Do you recall how much you were in for each of these moneywise?
@thespaltydog1039
@thespaltydog1039 3 года назад
I dont remember exactly. But steel is surprisingly cheap if you buy it from a metal supplier. Most often have remnant sections too for even better deals. I definitely didn't spent $120 on the steel for both of them so if you already have the tools to weld and don't care to put the time in making them you'd save a bit of money in the end.

Watch out welding the casters there galvanized I.E. Poison, drink milk it will help flush out the galvanized poison. Nice job ill be building me a set.

Good job. But that weld at 4:48 looks horrible. I think you need shielding gas, like 80/20 Argon-C02 mix.
@thespaltydog1039
@thespaltydog1039 4 года назад
Thanks! Yeah, this was my first welding project with my own welder. I bought a large tank of shielding gas but was sold a near empty tank and it ran out really quickly without me noticing. I got it swapped out and it seemed to help out a lot more!

If your welds were good they would look good and shouldnt need ground off.
@googleuser3714
@googleuser3714 3 месяца назад
Adding to this comment. if the welds are good and YOU DO GRIND, it should have no voids or pits. Grind off lumpy welds, re-weld, grind again. Try turning up the heat (voltage and wire speed for Amps).
