Yes, I agree totally! After using Nikon for years, I switched to M43 and the Lumix G9. I thought, that Nikons ergonomics are unbeatable ... but I was wrong! The handling of the G9 is just fantastic! The autofocus speed and accurracy is perfect an the image quality is very good. It is the perfect camera for travel and streetphotography. Easy and fast to use, reliable and robust.
I love it. Just acquired the Panasonic 100-400 in addition to the other lenses for wildlife photography. I was really astonished what I can do without a tripod just by using the stabilization. The 100-400 is huge compared to my other lenses. However: it's way smaller than any comparable Full Frame lens. As I always tell people: Now there is still some room for water in my backpack when out in the wilderness :)
I've bought one few days ago, fantastic camera for wildlife photography too, Image stabilization is awesome and allow to take pictures of birds even without tripod. Thanks for your advice!
Amazing camera, I love it, great specs and after the v 2.0 update it's nearly a gh5 with even some better stuff as autofocus and for photography plus great IS👌
I have the G9. Love this camera for the reasons you give. The lens choices are good, too. My primary purpose is photography, not video, and the G9 offers great photography configurable features without the weight and distraction of a video-first functionality focus.
Great video! I had purchased my first G9 (I have a second now for event photography/backup) about a month before this video. You nailed every factor. I'm incredibly pleased you discussed ergonomics. Too many beginners just look at specs. Using a camera you enjoy using makes a difference in the photos. It shows. Before moving to New York, I sold as much photography equipment I could. I sold my technically superior Canon 5D MKII over the 50D. Yes, I knew I would get more money for it. But I just loved, and still, love using my 50D. I shot with it for about a year before I switched to m43. 3 years later, the G9. The G9 feels much like my 50D ergonomically. With superhero abilities!
The G9 is almost undoubtedly the top stills camera for M43 currently. I only say almost for the Olympus users out there ;-) I tried the G9 in a shop and the grip is fantastic, the controls are in the right place, it feels great. But for me, no, it is too big. I like the range finder style more. The GX9 looks great.
Hi Matti. I bought a used G9 withe the Lumix/Leica 100-400mm lens and what a great combo. It feels really good in the hands. View finder is way better then the Olympus. I came from the Canon camp and have enjoyed the multistick for moving the focus point for over 10 years and was glad that the G9 had that. Oly finally did but just on the pro E-M1x. The only downside is the hair trigger shutter button. Lastly the top LCD is a great thing as well.
My Oly lenses are loving every second mounted on the G9. Just learned recently about using BBF with MF and that blew my mind. Basically you then get BBF with focus peaking.
I love my G9 too. Unfortunately it is in the camera shop now. I have taken 10,000 pics in 4 weeks. Hi speed shooting wildlife. After an hour shooting this way it created a hot dead pixel. That dead pixel takes out the whole row on the sensor so even single shot shooting gives a noticable line on every RAW file I take. This also happened on my GX80.
@@MrZombs123 I did not contact Panasonic directly. The camera shop said they've only ever had 1 other camera returned with a dead pixel. It is under warrenty yes. 2 years and option to extend to 4 years. The line can appear at first and then return to normal after a while. But I believe high speed shooting constantly will make the damage permanently. I will have to use the function sparingly. I don't want to test it just to see if the sensor breaks again.
Hi Matti, Thank you for another great video. Question, have you heard of Panasonic releasing a major update for the G9? I hope they can update it to also do Live Composite like Oly cameras and the G95.
Pricing error by Amazon. Curry's did a price match and some other local stores. Basically the store who did price match lost out on Amazon's mistake. If you managed to get the price match you made a once off great deal.
I've just bought one Matti and I absolutely love it, my Rangefinder GX9 now feels puny in comparison, the ergos & viewfinder of the G9 just wonderful. Don't know whether to keep the GX9 as a 2nd body or trade it in towards getting a Pana Leica 50-200 which would give me the trio of f2.8-4 zooms but the 50-200 is crazy expensive.
I own and love my G9 i looked at the S series and it felt like double the size so I've left it for now, But may consider a S series sports camera if they can release one or if they upgrade the megapixel count on the newer G9 as i shoot aircraft .
Even when I sold my G9 last week with all lenses 😭 to be able to buy a S1... the G9 was the best MFT and fastest Camera which I ever owned and I had many, many cameras / systems all brands and all sensor sizes. 19.11. Is a large update planned which will make the G9 even better. 👍😉
Matti, I really enjoy your videos and this one cemented even more so, my decision buying the G9! Question...for landscape...not video but photography...do you recommend the 15mm 7.1 or the 8x18mm ? I'm looking for a beautiful tack sharp (on a tripod) picture! I realize they are 2 different lens types but, I want something that will look good reprinted and or published in a book! I have the 35-100mm already. Look forward to your next video & Thank you in advance!!!
I own both the 8-18mm f2.8-4 and the 15mm f1.7. If you just want to do landscape photography I would recommand the 8-18 as it will give you way more flexibility. Stopped down to f4 it will be as sharp, if not even a little bit sharper than the 15mm. The 8-18 is also wheater sealed, so if your body is it's also a plus ! Do you own the 35-100 f2.8 ? What's your opinion about this lens ? I am considering trading my 14-140 for this one !
Thank you for that input antho! Now to find a bearable price! The 35-100 is a wonderful lens ...F2.8 throughout ! I chose it over the 100-400mm...Not enough difference in picture quality, and the OIS in both glass and my camera, G9, so I chose to save money until I see a need to make a difference. It has wonderful video qualities as well! Thanks again for sharing!
I bought a G9 yesterday and I love it so far!! I just discovered that the LCD screen has a little play when it’s faced out (not fully flipped out). It moves about 1-2mm up and down. I discovered that while using the touch screen. Normal behavior or should I be worried? I really enjoyed your video! Thanks!!
I sold a hostile Sony A7RIII for this photographer-friendly G9 and never regret it. Ergonomics and handling are a must. Olympus lenses are often exceptional. No other brand is able to make a so small, light and sharp 150mm F1.8 equivalent. And Pana only offers a compact 200-800 equivalent who weighs less than 1kg. At this day I have no reason to go back to FF.
I really like my Lumix G9, but it is a bit hard to find the right option in the menys! I try to find where I can get rid of the microphone indicator (L/R) in my display? Where to find it? Thanks...
amazing camera with a 1 MAJOR flaw - hot pixels with any exposure above 1 second with or without LENR. This happens even under winter temperatures. I had 2 copies of the G9 and both had this problem, all photography forums have pointed this out as well. Panasonic messed up big time and are not addressing this problem - this is the reason I cannot use this camera for long exposures or night photography. Removing them in post takes very long and there are way too many to remove. Matti, could you help send the message to the Lumix folks to see if they can do a "sensor replacement" program? Ergo, stabilization, and EVF on the G9 is superb. The Gh5 also suffers from hot pixels, but GH4 did not. The E-m1 mark ii doesn't have any until hitting past 1 min. I also have a Sony full frame and an older X-T1, dislike the ergo but they don't suffer from hot pixels (even with LENR off).
@@mattisulanto thanks Matti :) It's Long Exposure Noise Reduction. For non-long exposure genres (portraits, wildlife) this setting is irrelevant and the G9 nails them.
I am debating between the G9 and the Oly Om d em 1 Mark II. Trouble is I have a few Oly lenses and apparantly they don’t work that good on Pany bodies.
Should be the same image wise between GX9, G90, compared to G9. I don't want a overly sensitive shutter button going off when doing the auto-focusing before I want to full pull that trigger. Also want more compact size. The GX85 takes very good 16MP images, but true the 20MP sensor is better in low light situations. But the GX85 is a wonderful and inexpensive street-shooter camera -- nice!
Wow you have 3, I considering buy it instead of the gh5, if you can choose 2 lenses which ones they would be? sorry for my bad english, I see the 42.5mm is very cool for portrait and b roll
@ I forgot to mention I only shoot video with the g9s that I own. I use several Canon mount lenses with an adapter. The three native lenses that I like are the 12-32 f2.8, 42.5mm f1.8, and the 25mm f1.8.

@@jorgem50 thank you! if I get the g9 + Lumix 25mm f1.7, which other lens would you recommend me to compliment it for videos? Would the 42.5mm would be a good idea then? I would prefer to take advantage of the dual IBIS (on a budget lens and also another lens in a mid budget)
Yes, after the latest firmware update the slow motion got even better and now there is variable frame rate. You can choose several frame rates from 2 to 180fps. That is in FHD, of course. The max in 4k is 60p. The G9 can also do 4k 10-bit 422 30p internally and 4k 10-bit 422 60p externally.
...when you really love photography.....all cameras are good...the rest is bla..bla...bla.... ....This is what I think....and feel... .......your love is photography.... ....not the camera.....
I'm sure it takes great photos but first you have to get past the God awful Panasonic menu system! Why have 1 screen when 17 will do? That is the primary reason that drove me back to Olympus, The other reason which is more personal is that the size just wasted comfortable for me, grip was just slightly too chunky, didnt feel right for me. Personally I think the EM1 series is the perfect camera for me.
@@mattisulanto no I exaggerate a little, I think off the top of my head theres 2 or maybe 2.5 screens, each line has a sub screen and then maybe one or two options for each category, but compare to Panasonic there seems to be about 5 screens, each category has about 5 sub screens and each one on each subscreen another lod of pages, it honestly baffles me how people think Olympus menus are worse than pana
For me the stabilisation is essential on these cameras as I like to shoot long focal lengths handheld. Its also extremely useful for video and for just keeping iso low in stills.
