Before the list started I was like "The Nebulon B will be one of them", and then that was the first one on the list.

Interestingly, if you look back into Legend's Cannon it was actually Admiral Thrawn who used the Lancer's the most effectively. He would place them next to ISDs. In this manner the Lancer and the ISD form a sort of symbiotic relationship. The Lancer would keep the fighters off the larger ship while the larger ISD could use it's heavier weapons to defend the Lancer from larger threats it was never designed to deal with.

Ahhh, the Lancer. Always a fun one! More than twenty highly specialized anti-fighter weapons with highly accurate targeting systems.. The likes of which nearly half would be broken at any given point or having major systmes errors. In fleet engagements they would have to be stationed well forwards in the fleet to be able to effectively engage incoming fighters.. Which made them vulnerable to other capital ships which they couldn't run away from and with weak shields and hull. They were great at killing starfighters.. Provided they lived to face them.

I've always thought that the central spar on a Nebulon-B was a honey pot, that the armor there was actually very thick, maybe 10 times anywhere else on the vessel, and that the combination of thick armor and a hard to target section that seems venerable would draw enemy fire, but not necessarily cause damage.

I think I'd rather take my chances with the airlock than serve on any of these ships.

The Interdictor is a high value target that needs to be properly protected. In addition, by itself and against an equal opposing force, it can do pretty well. It just needs to be properly wielded.

I feel like a quasar fire carrier is a good fit. It’s huge, it’s slow, and lightly armed. It relies almost entirely on its extensive fighter compliment. Which, while not bad, once depleted, leaves this thing a big triangular target. Another I’d say is the gladiator. A well rounded imperial frigate. It doesn’t seem to excel at anything. While not a main line cruiser, it still lacks that big tonnage the Imperials like so much. Without all that firepower and fighter capacity like an ISD or some other bigger imperial warship, it’s kinda toast with a pass of some B wings and Y wings. There are my two contributions. Tell me what ya think!

So a normal Star Destroyer actually is safer then at least some ships. Though I guess Star Destroyers aren't so bad since they could fly in pairs and stuff.

As far as the Lancer is concerned, it isn't necessarily a bad ship to serve on, if it is in a fleet defence role. Certainly there is the possibility of being hit with a stray shot, but more often than not the larger capital ships would be the priority target for an enemy fleet. So let's be fair here, if a Lancer is pared with a larger warship, and both ships are being used to their best potential, it will most likely be just fine. There is always inherent risk during war.

Well, considering the recusant was used with the munificents in head to head fights against fcking venator, I'd say they did overperform.

If i was a Rebel Captain or served in one of these vessels, it would definitely be the Recusant-class, albeit with heavy modifications.

#1: Absolutely any super-weapon. After a single successful demonstration, that thing will be going up in a ball of flaming metal and corpses. And you will not have any warning beforehand.

If smaller ships counted, here's an honorable mention: Starfortresses. I'd hold a commanding officer at gunpoint not to serve on one!

Lancers suffered more from bad tactics and misapplication than bad design. Deploying them ahead of the ISDs made them cannon fodder for the opposing capital ships; however, if ISDs engaged first and Lancers were held back until the starfighters actually arrive, they could cause a lot of trouble for the Rebels, whose starfighters and pilots were far less disposable than the Imperial TIEs. Of course the Empire's tactics were always crippled by plot-induced stupidity and Rebels never leave home without Plot Armor.

Well, the Nebulon had that weird neck design for a very good reason. The engines and reactor were apparently somewhat... temperamental and would explode violently given the slightest provocation, so the neck was there to try and save much of the crew in the likely event of a catastrophic failure. Of course, the fact that this makes the Nebulon even more of a deathtrap and whoever signed off on producing that thing is probably evil.

Worst space going experience: Event Horizon v. Outbound Flight v. Nostromo v. Discovery One.

I love the nebulon B looking , one of my favorite star wars ship , but i have to agree , i would not be in one of them in front of star destroyer or battle cruiser

for the interdictor, your survivability would more likely come down to tactics. Thrawn made great use of interdictors. They would pull an enemy fleet out of hyperspace and then they would retreat behind the lines of their fleet and put the other imperial ships between them and the rebels, or even jump in first so they could position themselves swiftly and pull the rest of the fleet out at a predetermined spot with pinpoint precision and timing. the enemy would see an interdictor or 2 jump in and send a small interception force only to have that force swiftly wiped out when the main imperial fleet would land right on top of the interdictors and immediately commence their attack.

OK, if the empire can afford a moon sized battle station requiring 20 years of R&D and construction, they can afford to use not-out-of-date-3000-years-ago ships.

I'd say your best postings are on either dedicated customs ships or on serious cruisers. Either you get quiet patrol duty with big backup nearby to take over if things go bad, or you get a good chance at being the biggest guns in the fight.

Fun fact about the Nebulon-B Frigate. In Legends it was an Imperial ship used to counter the early Rebellion (the war in Legends had been raging for some time before Luke joined up and was a proper war against a well organized and equipped Rebellion, rather than the canon skirmishes against isolated rebel cells and the actual war beginning earlier that week). The Neb-B served as a sort of step below the use of a Victory Star Destroyer, itself a step below the use of an Imperial-class. You'd use them on the Empire's outlying border worlds or to escort the larger Star Destroyers. Despite being intended for use against the Rebels, the Rebellion found them incredibly easy to steal, be it through disabling them in combat or just by raiding the shipyards. As a result, the Nebulon-B became more associated with the very Rebellion it was intended to fight against, given there wound up being more of them in Rebel hands than in Imperial ones.

Sounds like most of them are just a case of being used wrongly. :)

Hey Eck, been a while since you did a Battle Breakdown; any chance we'll be seeing any of those anytime soon? I'd love to see you dig into some more 40k stuff, and a breakdown of the Battle of Gethsemane would be pretty amazing I think.

The lancer was often used effectively, enough so that they at least gained a reputation that made them as scary to rebel fighter pilots as an entire imperial class star destroyer and its own fighter compliment (even rogue squadron often seemed more frightened of lancers than they were of imperial star destroyers at times). That said, I could understand it being bad to be on one if all it was sent after were things bigger than a corvette. Also, the nebulon-b could be a formidable ship if used correctly (and it was often used correctly by both rebels and imperials in legends). The neck was vulnerable, but it also had decent shields for its size, and there actually was a good reason for its configuration. The idea was to separate the engines, powerplant, etc. etc. from the rest of the ship so that the destruction of an engine wouldn't be as crippling, this threat mainly coming from enemy fighters, bombers, and other faster/more maneuverable ships. It could be effective against a large range of enemies, from fighters to capital ships. The way it should be used depended on several things: what it was going up against, whether it was alone/what allies it had, and how it was configured (different nebulons were set up for different purposes). In general, a Nebulon-B actually made a decent strike ship against things such as space stations. In that scenario, it uses its fighter squadrons (assuming it was set up to carry them) to target the defenses of the station, and not move within gunnery range until the space station could no longer return fire. In a one on one slug fest, the nebulon b could actually go up against some large targets. It actually had a decent amount of fire focused in the front in specific cones of fire, so against other capital ships of similar armament and tonnage, it could do decently. The key was to never, never, show the neck. At longer ranges against enemy fighters, it was ok to show the neck to fire broadsides at incoming fighters and bombers and then when they started to get closer, to turn and show the bow while accelerating forward, or stand its ground if its shields were in good shape. In large fleets, it was a good skirmisher or distraction, as though not necessarily as threatening as a dedicated heavy cruiser, if given the opportunity it could seriously ruin even a star destroyers day. Its shields, by the way, were sufficient that it could run past a star destroyer going the other direction without being severely damaged. Basically, that neck was a vulnerability that was compensated for with good shields (possibly as good as mon cal).

The idea of point defence ships in space, you have them forward to intercept the fighters and torpedoes that come in the first wave, then you drop them back for when the capital ships get in range. During that part of the battle, they project their firepower forward to snipe fighters.

I remember reading somewhere in one of the books Aeran Crackens one re-occurring nightmare. Was Booster Terrick and his Mark II Imperial Star Destroyer rocking up to some planet or base and glassing it becasue they pissed him off. He begrudgingly let Booster have it after he captured it, but Aeran made damn well sure it was stripped to the bones. He didn't even think of Boosters wide network and his ability to resource all the missing gear. Not to mention later on he was forced to help Booster find enough bright red paint to cover the ship nearly completely (one thing Booster never managed to do, and the places that were not painted were used as billboards and advertisement spaces) for helping them yet again for the goodness of Boosters dear heart....( it was actually to help his daughter). But that would be one ship you would actually feel safe on.

As for me, I’d gladly serve on all of these. As the Klingons from Star Trek say, heghlu'meh qaq jajvam (Today is a good day to die)

Always liked the Lancer in SW: Rebellion. Used properly, it wreaks havoc with the rebels plans. Since it's there to handle fighters (more to the point, fighter/bombers) it's easy enough to just post behind the ISD, then bring it up to handle the problems and stay somewhat protected. Strategies used against it would be designed around keeping away from the ISD until you can stop *their* bombers and screen. Slugfest otherwise.

If you ever do one about sci-fi ships in general, you'll want to include the Yamato from Star Blazers, particularly getting stationed on the dreaded (often exploding) third bridge XD

I see what you're saying about the interdictor, but at the same time it will be one of the most heavily guarded ships for the same reason.

Being that the Lancer was made to counter Rebel tactics of relying on Star Fighters, I think this would be a relatively safe ship to serve on due to most of the Rebellion cruisers / capital ships were not spread out but concentrated at any given time.
