Hey Derby Jake - CONGRATULATIONS on getting a Newfie - especially a Landseer (which I think are just the best!). Thanks for the encouragement - and I make videos as I develop my girl's training and folks ask me questions, so I see where the interest lies. I just do this for fun and building the bond and trust with my dog - and I hope to share some of that enthusiasm and fun with others - will certainly be more to come.

They all, We all, had to start somewhere. Some good advice here but some bad execution in building or sizing a training cart starting at 1:21. The shafts are too narrow hitting the dog in front shoulders and rear quarters. I guess it would take a lot of encouragement for make me go anywhere when something is unnaturally poking me at every step.

Thanks - went through many iterations of "training-carts" (mock-carts) and shafts (various widths and lengths) as my girl grew and I learned. Still working the challenge and now on about shaft design number 5 which bends in from wide to fit dog and extends beyond dog's shoulders. As in all my videos, I do not heavily edit to make it look perfect and easy, showing only the final outcome - so - good observation. Am now working on a new cart I sit in, and dog wears a siwash harness - no shafts at all - with Ackerman steering (helps a lot with turns) and disc brakes - wait for the video. Look forward to seeing your cart and shaft designs. Thanks again for comment and happy dog training.

what kind of harness do you use
@RealDogs

Hi Cindy: I live in New South Wales, Australia - and so purchased the carting harness in this video from a company called "Windchill Dog Gear" (www.windchill.com.au/ - great quality and sensible price - lots of sites in USA and UK make them as well). Also if you look at my recent video on Dog Harnesses and their use (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_T0m3JLD_Qg.html) - towards the end of that I show all of the harnesses I use - including the carting one, as well as a newer siwash harness (for use without cart shafts - as is used in snow sled dog mushing) also from Windchill. Happy to provide further detail if required.

That rear girth strap is it attached to the rest of the harness? I’m having trouble understanding the set up

Hey - I agree it is quite confusing at first (I was challenged first fittings - and with the siwash I recently used I got it totally wrong in my first video - heh, heh!). So - looking at this video at 0.46 (Step 2); 1.02 (Step 3); 1.11 (different shaft designs) - the front belly strap attaches just behind front legs and this is the one that the shafts attach to (this attachment is tricky - in the first reference above I had a loop held by a purple carabiner ready to take shafts when my dog was ready for that; later shots with the actual cart rather than a "drag" I have stuck in a short piece of poly pipe that my shafts fit through (I used "shoe glue"for this as it is rubbery, flexible, doesnt crack or affect the straps - and yes its good for glueing the sole of your joggers back on!). These poly pipe "inventions" facilitate easy fitting rather than having to work out the loop for the shaft every time - may be a smarter way to do it - but works for me. By the way - the shafts have a "stop" fitted so that when the dog stops but the cart is still moving - but stops as the shaft "stop" bumps against the harness loop (in my case the poly pipe). The rear strap you are trying to figure out you attach last, once the harness is on - this goes around the dog about the rear of the rib cage (obviously firm but not restrictive tight) and it passes though the two short parts of the diagonal strap which attach the rings (that is, the strap is doubled just in front of the trace - the thin straps which pull the cart - ring attachment point creating a flat loop which the belly strap passes through). Its purpose is to hold those diagonals in a suitable rear position and not flop around. This strap is last to go on and first to take off. Hope this helps.

It does thank you! I’ll be reading it a few times 😂. I also need to buy a chain to help him drag something before his cart arrives! 😊
@MaximillianandRubyGrace
@MaximillianandRubyGrace Год назад
One more question.. how long is the chain you used for the log?
@RealDogs
@RealDogs Год назад
@@MaximillianandRubyGrace The chain is purely to add a little weight and some noise as the dog moves forward (the chain rattles over bumps or gravel) - so the dog gets used to some noise behind it (which eventually will come from the cart) and learns that the noise is nothing to worry about. I used about 2 meters of chain - but you could use something else - some folks use an old bicycle tyre tied by rope, etc, anything for moderate weight and a little noise. Some dogs just take to the cart no problem - my girl needed some convincing and coaching. As I say in the video, go at the pace your dog can handle without getting worried - some of my 5 Steps might be skipped for some dogs - others might need more gradual steps.

My male hates a harness! He runs.. I need to condition him
@RealDogs
@RealDogs Год назад
Just take it slow and gentle. At first, I left the harness and some poles (like the cart shafts) lying around on the kitchen floor, so my girl had to step over them (she was initially apprehensive of the shafts - no - never been hit and certainly not with a pole! Just natural wariness of something new). Sometimes I would sit next to the harness and give her a food reward if she just looked at it or sniffed it (part of "shaping "or "free form" training). Move slowly to handling the harness in front of dog and giving treats. It takes a lot of patience - just 1 minute a day or a couple of times a day. As in the "5 Steps to Carting" video I moved slowly to harness wearing and a "drag cart" with plastic shafts. She really did not look very happy in some of that video. Looking back, it took a lot of effort - but worth it. Now my girl stands and puts her head forward to wait for any harness to be fitted because she knows fun - and treats - are coming! Every dog is different - I have seen some Newfies which are just nonchalant and don't care what you ask of them. Stick with it and make it fun.

I will thank you! So glad I found your channel as I want them to do Newfie things but I’ve struggled finding help
@RealDogs
@RealDogs Год назад
@@MaximillianandRubyGrace Yes I have done most of the specialized Newfie water and carting training by myself - just reading and RU-vid for ideas to experiment with. I did take my girl right through obedience training to trial level (I don't actually do trials - I just enjoy the bond and fun with the dog) which has helped in developing her comprehending what I want when I give a cue.

@@RealDogs wish I had done that. I’ve learned a lot of my mistakes as we go. Such an incredible breed

@@MaximillianandRubyGrace Never too late to do basic obedience work - if that's what you are referring to. Don't believe that old adage that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks"! I think that maybe applies to old blokes but not to dogs! Ha, ha.
