If you plan to let dragon fruit plants grow roots into your garden soil, there is is really nothing to worry about the soil mix. You can use a bottomless pot with any pot mix just to start and then the roots will travel into the ground. They don't go deep. They remain shallow at the level of the roots of your garden lawns. When you fertilise your lawns to keep them green and healthy, you also feed your dragon fruit plants. As you never need to water the dragon fruit plants in this situation, the roots never rot even if there is alot of rain over 2 weeks. In Sydney, my brother has three bushes of white flesh dragon and over 100 fruits each year. They pretty much grow wild without care and still give a lot of big fruits each year. Only when you grow in a pot and keep the roots pot-bound, unless you mix your own stuff with lots of sand and perlite to allow air and water passing the roots, things will go wrong after 2-3 years.

I can only report on what i've tried, but would agree in most parts. Cant get root bound if they have the open ground to grow into.. but if your soils clay, sand or some sort of terribly poor drainage, you'd likely stumble across some problems. You have much more control of the environment in a pot, but the small environment obvious has its obstacles. Would love to let some of mine free into the soil, but my allocated dragon space is the deck haha

Something I've discovered in my early days of starting to grow dragon fruit seriously. When taking cuttings, instead of spraying down my tools each time, I just spray the fresh wound with straight isopropyl alcohol. So far it has worked a charm and not a single trace of mould forming while I let then dry

Nice one! I have tried it a few times when carving chunks from a sunburn or rotted branch, hasnt been as effective..

@@DreaminDragons in what way? As in the alcohol damages the plant or it didn't stop any infection?

If people tell me they are having trouble growing dragonfruit, i tell them they should give up gardening! Out of my 250 fruiting trees, dragonfruit are a favourite because i dont do squat for them.

Bunch of useful info,😮 mate. Thanks. Currently i'm dealing with fungus and ants. There are brown spots on my new sub branches that i've already sprayed with fungicide. Fingers crossed they'll recover. However the Bruni graft wasn't lucky. The ants got to it. I shall try again using another technique. Still have plenty of seedlings to play with courtesy of a mate from Oz. Cough....cough. 😂

Does a branch need to curve down to produce flowers and then fruits?
@DreaminDragons
@DreaminDragons 27 дней назад
I have had some fruit on horizontal branches, but i suspect the stress from the curved branches aids in inducing the buds 👍

Lesson number 1. Dont buy unknown varieties from home depot. Watch loads of videos before even thinking about starting. A days worth of videos will save you years worth of hard work and regret

100% It pays off in the long run to set yourself up for success with decent cuttings 👌 And definitely agree, plenty of great info out there too
