Show vs Tell videos are always welcome by new writers.

"Backpack of burden" is such a great way to refer to those feelings. I think perfectionism in writing would be a great full-length video to do. This was a wonderful refresher!

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, that tip about dialogue tags is so important for new writers. When learning about writing in school, we would seek out synonyms for said to use instead. While it was good, it gave many people the idea to use them all the time. And yes, focus on the joy of the story instead of listening to the nagging voice. Getting better at writing takes time.

I have just started watching these videos, and I like this on if for no other reason than her, you, saying, "THE PURPOSE OF TELLING A STORY IS TO ENJOY IT." That has been why I tell stories.

Tip #5 is my greatest foe, and it's why I've spent so much time away from writing. I'm ready to make another push, and your videos are helping me get back into the right mindset. Thank you!

In addition to videos on show versus tell, I would love to see pointers on story development. I feel like that’s the state that I am at at the moment as I start to ask myself questions to point out what I’m missing in my storytelling. Identifying what needs to be elaborated on, etc.

Yes I would like to know your opinion on 'show don't tell '.I've seen other people's opinions on this, however I run all of them to together. I also love you to do a video on a blurp.

I'm only just coming to terms with seeing my skill as always evolving. I used to just hoard things hoping I'd get better and go back and fix them. The only way to improve is to do, so I'm slowly posting things when they come, accepting I'll make something better someday, and heading toward that goal instead of being ashamed of earlier attempts :)

Please please please consider doing a video on writing historical fiction. You have first-hand experience with it and there are so few videos on RU-vid concerning this. Even if a person is not writing a true historical fiction novel, most novels have some element of history and the need for research, so I think the video would be received by a wide audience. Thanks for all you do!

I love all ur videos. Thank you so much for this newest gem of valuable info. As a new writer I would say my biggest struggle is plot development and especially plot development in fantasy. I have started and stopped plots over the last several years as I am trying to teach myself. I am even confused in what I want my story to be. Just as an example if I have a vampire villain that is killing (for unknown reasons) and the mc is drawn into finding out why and stopping him is it a mystery, who done it or a thriller? A hero’s journey a quest? There’s so many genres and sub genres for everything that it gets overwhelming.

I've just discovered your videos and I'll be watching them all! Thank you for putting out such amazing content, you may have inspired me to give it another go... 😎

+1 for blurbs and show vs tell. Struggling with stakes and knowing how to balance show/tell. I've got a monstrosity of a first draft because I think might be trying show too much?
@ZombieLocky

I like books with many third person limited views, ones where you can get into multiple characters minds and explore... As long as they seperate every POV into different chapters, otherwise things can get a little messy. Though I may be biased, considering this way of writing is what I’m currently doing. My way of thinking is that there are multiple people going through the same scene, and your book is best served by picking the most interesting character for that moment.

Along with writing blurbs, I would also appreciate your insight on writing queries for traditional publishing, and tweets for events such as #PitMad :) I would also love to hear more about your thoughts on hybrid publishing in general.

Thank you so much for these tips. I do have a question about being in your character's head. How do we do internal dialog? I've seen some people use italics to denote internal thoughts, but I've seen people use quotes and the dialog tag, they said to themself. Is there more than one way? Any info would be appreciated.
@NataliaLeigh
@NataliaLeigh 3 года назад
Great question! You can handle inner thought in a few different ways. My favorite is italics, as it immediately clues the reader in on the fact that the character is thinking, but I've worked with many writers who prefer using quotes to format their characters' inner thought. :) As long as you're consistent, you have some wiggle room with this.

Thank you! I am writing my first, first-person story and have been playing around to see how I like it. To be honest, I don't know if I like first-person, but I'm trying to stretch and grow myself.
