Insulation is key especially in cold countries like Canada. I built top insulation covers that double as winter feeders using removable inserts totaling over R-60. As for the sides I use a regular hive winter blanket. It's proven very effective :)

With treating mid August and leaving a lot of honey guess that's why you only need a smaller amount of syrup to get them to weight

Great advice 👏👏 New beekeepers need to start hefting their hives as they go into winter so they start to know how heavy hives are, then in spring they will really notice if a hive is suddenly much lighter and needs feeding 👍👍🇬🇧

@@BlackMountainHoney thanks mate, I have a hive with no evidence of a queen, I'm worried the queen might have died over the winter, I will do another inspection in a few days if i still have no brood I might be needing a queen.

When you drop them down to 1 box, how does that not stimulate them to swarm?

That's because it's done when the queen is naturally slowing down her laying as part of their winter prep

Great videos. But I find it hard to keep track of the months….I’m in the northern hemisphere and you’re south so out months are flipped🤓

My Smith hive was on the verge of starving as had fondant above crown board this year, as on a previous year it was directly on the frames but started to run covering the bees. So any tips on how to avoid either issue....
