I coached many years of high school and also umpired many years, so i never really had any problems with umps because i knew how to talk to them. I probably coached about 250 games and only got tossed once. It was a high school double header, and in the first game, the ump was the field umpire. We had runners on first and second, ground ball to short and the shortstop tries to get the lead runner at third, as the runner sliding into 3rd, the ball hits him in the helmet and bounces off. The ump called him out for interference. I told the ump that for interference on a thrown ball, it can only be called if the runner intentianally tried to block the ball and since he was sliding and since it hit him in the back of the head ,that was not possible. He refused to change the call even though i showed him the rule in the book and threatened to throw me out. I was upset, but let it go. 2nd game, the same ump is now behind the plate. He's actually calling pitches before the ball hits the catcher's mitt. I honestly don't know how he was assigned a high school game. Anyway, in like the second inning, our pitcher throws a pitch. He does his usual and calls it a ball before the pitch arrives, but the batter bunts it and fouls it off. I said to him, "That was a foul ball. Did you not see that." He said, 'You can't argue balls and strikes." I don't remember exactly what I said, but I didn't curse or anything, and he said " one more word, and you're done!" I said: "word!" And I got tossed. Sorry for the long story, but sometimes you can't help but get tossed.😊

When I coached and was saddled with a lousy ump, I'd periodically run up to him after a bad call and scream "That was a great f'in call! You are right on top of things!" then go back to the dugout and not even wait for a reaction.

I found a sports report on this series and they couldn't see where the ball went because someone's head was in the way. So basically, Jake Fromm hit the ball over the fence and it was originally ruled a foul ball, but then the umps discussed it and then ruled it fair and a homerun. But like I said, even the local news station didn't get a clean view of the hit. They went on to win 12-0, so even if it was a bad call, it ended up not really affecting the game

Here's what the Loganville coach said about it: “Third base umpire called it foul and their coach asked for help and the home plate umpire over rules (the third base umpire), which isn’t his call,” Segars said. “Its unfortunate…it’s just a bad call. These kids have fought hard all year and that call really made a difference in the game, I thought. Gotta give Houston County credit, they seized the momentum and never let it go, but a lot of that momentum was off of a bad call.” “You know if it’s a questionable call like a home run call we had at East Paulding during the first round I probably won’t say anything, but that call wasn’t questionable. It was foul.” Segars said. “When something like that happens you can’t sit around and watch that kind of stuff.”
@mptr1783
@mptr1783 Год назад
haha, and the final score was 12-0. Yeah, it made a big difference in the game. Also, just because it was the 3rd base umpires call doesnt mean he was right. He went for help(which tells me he wasnt sure) and if the plate umpire clearly saw it the other way, then he makes the call.
@tjones5719
@tjones5719 Год назад
@@mptr1783”He went for help…” that’s where you didn’t follow what was said. The coach is saying the third base ump didn’t ask for help, the other coach went to the home base ump for help. Now proper procedure is the third base ump needs to ask for help, but sometimes home base umps fail to follow protocol. I had that happen in a game where I was playing first base, the ball grounded to my right so I had to dive to get it. My pitcher was coming to cover the bag, but I was quick enough where I got to my feet and dove to the bag with my glove hitting the bag. Within about a second the pitcher then crosses over the bag, and then within about two seconds the runner comes across the bag. No slow up to the runner and no one collided. The first-second base ump was in perfect position and called it out - the last out of the inning. The other teams coach complained directly to the home plate ump, who wasn’t in position to make the call and that ump overruled the field ump without being asked by that ump. So it does happen.

Happens all the time. Now if it were a parent then I’d have a problem with it. I’ve literally had yelling conversations with college coaches tell me to throw them out to get their team into the game more. One guy came up to me and said “I think you’re doing a great job but you’re gonna have to throw me out to wake my guys up.” I said “huh?!” And he said “you’re right huh! You haven’t see anything at all tonight have you!” I tossed him and we winked at me on the way out. I’m not saying that’s what happened here but he left with no problem. @@kennethstegall1075 It's not talking a big game. No one will ever speak to me in this manner whether I am umpiring or anywhere else. The umpire did do his job - the entire game, making mistakes while doing your job does not give anyone the right to act like a pathetic human being and abuse them for making a mistake. Also, for the record I umpired Division I college baseball in numerous conferences and professional baseball for 7 years. My time and experience there have forged my resolve in how I deal with idiots like this and so many other coaches who behave in the same manner. This kind of behavior is B.S. and sets a horrible example for kids, knocking someone out for treating you this way would set a tremendous example to not allow anyone to treat you like a rug and walk all over you. I practice my art daily and wouldn't have any problem handling anyone who doesn't train at the level I do on a regular basis even. I also know how to articulate my case when I do have to defend myself or get in altercation while I am working so that me knocking someone out or choking them unconscious will not have any legal repercussions on me or my career. If it came to that I would also sue any organization for taking games away from me for defending myself. I promise you I am not just talking, I have been through this numerous times and left people laying on the ground at my place of business for approaching me in a threatening manner as this coach did to this umpire. The funny thing is there isn't a coach alive who act like this to me regardless of how many calls I missed because they are all mostly cowards who hide behind their schedule and threat of red lining you, they would take one look at me and know to approach me with their hat in the hand in a courteous manner because I look like I might rip them apart if they don't and mostly they all know my level of training.

@@kennethstegall1075 First of that isn't what happen and rarely is. This is rarely a problem on properly coached teams because players know the price that will be paid for being disrespectful on the field and they lead by example in their interactions on the field. Typical, an Umpire can screw up multiple calls every game and nothing ever happens to them! But God Forbid a Coach has a disagreement and …You’re OUTTA-HERE.!!! 😡 I’m sick of this umpire’s are GOD Syndrome 😡. All of Baseball needs go with an Artificial Intelligence Umpiring Crew. There would never be a wrong call ever again.!!! And Coaches could stay in the games and help their teams. Ya know, by coaching like they are there to do and without Umps throwing them out without cause.!!! 🤔👍🏽
