Fix a New Gas Can in 5 Minutes - Adding a Vent

It isn't a secret: The new style gas cans are terrible fragile contraptions that have caused many a spills and are responsible for numerous new curse words being created to help describe them. But there is hope. This is my solution to this entirely unnecessary problem.
If you're wondering who is responsible for all of the gasoline spills and time spent waiting you have endured at the hands of these containers, you have the Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act to thank for this. I seriously doubt these have prevented any such tragedies (and most likely have caused some), but that's up to your legislators to decide. Trust them. They know what's best for you.

So far so good. I’ve filled it twice and it’s great getting 13 gallons at one shot ru-vid.comUgkx-vlHjazTv30m_UAq9Ht-fuPo2jBx7tTx . It pumps out by using gravity so the bottom of the tank needs to be above the vessel you're filling. Not a drop spilled filling the generator three times. Let’s see where we’re at after 20 fills.he slightly larger Panfish floats ru-vid.comUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU recommend they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.

Thanks for that info. I was just about to try the tire valve option glad to try the petcock option. . Even with the lockwasher I'm finding that the valve wants to back out of the plastic can. There is a Locktite epoxy for plastic product that I am going to try to see if the brass fitting can be tied to the plastic can little better.

Good job in not recommending the air valve stem method. I have tried that and it absolutely degrades in short time. I live in hot south texas and when the temperature rose enough and the valve's rubber degraded enough, the pressure within the can simply pushed the valve out. I had no idea how long it had been sitting without the valve and gasoline fumes leaking into my garage, I'm just glad I found it before anything bad happened.

I agree the almost annual redesign of gas cans is the pits. bureaucrats at the direction of yhe insurance sector draft what standars are supposed to meet , but engineers still design them.. For the most pat I have purchased wide mouth funner and forgo try to use the pour spout by unscrewing it off the gas to pour the liquid out. Sue I have to hold the can so air can enter the can while the gas is being pours out. That's what one had to do while using the metal cans of yesteryear that typical didn't have a vent. Except for the cans that had separate pour and fill openings, whee you loosened the fill cap a bit when pouring. Generally the gallon metal cans you had to live with the glug.glug pooer

FYI Pipes and their associated fittings are sized by nominal inside diameter with a standard wall thickness of 1/16" for non-threaded (I.e. copper pipe intended for "sweating") fittings and 1/8" for threaded; versus tubing sized by nominal outside diameter. E.g. 7/8" copper tubing and 3/4" copper pipe are cross-sectionally the same, save for being different alloys.

+mattmopar440 I tend to agree with you. There has actually been one company go out of business after being sued for their cans rupturing when they get hot enough, and opening one of these things up when fully pressurized is an easy way to get gasoline sprayed all over. I know of one person who went to the ER for that. The old style vents that leak slightly once the can is overpressurized worked great to keep things safe. Unfortunately they are now required to never vent under any circumstances. That's what happens you have something designed by bureaucrats instead of engineers I guess...

A Back Seat Valve Drain? I have never heard that name. On this side of the country, they call them a Petcock Drain Valve. I would put a dab of silicon on the valve threads before assembling. As for the valve being 1/8" and the hole being 3/8", a lot of the plumbing measurements are I.D., not O.D.
@faffaflunkie
@faffaflunkie 8 лет назад
+IamTedV Not _silicone-_ put _yellow _*_teflon tape_* on the threads to make a positive seal.
@bighammer587
@bighammer587 7 лет назад
faffaflunkie : Teflon tape is NOT used to seal anything. It's primary function is to lubricate the threads to prevent galling, which should not be an issue with the gas jug, its plastic!
@faffaflunkie
@faffaflunkie 7 лет назад
Silicone won't bond with plastic.Teflon doesn't _seal-_ but it's _lubricity_ makes a *tighter* thread.

Then pipe dope that is rated for flammable liquids, would be my next choice.

I find getting a Sunoco race fuel can from Amazon for $40 bucks is the best way to go. 2nd best way to go is getting a fluid container from rural King for $20. Both are 5 gallon "fuel" cans with long spouts, no safety valves, and vents. The Sunoco has a better vent less splash back and a wider spout tube.

Not a bad plan. If someone wants to do this be sure to get an o-ring that is rated for continuous immersion in gasoline. While such rings are easily obtainable note that your standard hardware store o-rings will deteriorate quickly and leave you worse off than without one.

@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 2 года назад
No gas cans can be legally sold with the spout you speak of. Any that are sold with that spout are not rated for gasoline and I don't want to put gas in a jug designed for water - if it splits that's a big problem. The liability repercussions mean that gasoline containers are built FAR better than 'race jugs' and the like. The kits they sell everywhere in stores come with a plastic cap that leaks and easily pops open under pressure. Useless and/or hazardous. I have seen some very nice add-on vent products for sale in various places on the internet which is a more refined version of what I show here. I haven't tried them but some of them look fairly legit.

@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 Год назад
I don't think you understand the history, politics, and unintended consequences of these government mandated containers. They do not prevent burn injuries nor do they have anything to do with seatbelts - not sure why you threw that logical fallacy (strawman) in there but it's clear evidence of someone who knows they have no valid argument. These containers often rupture in storage due to the high pressures, force high pressure streams of gasoline out of the spout when opened, regularly spill when in normal use, and even a 4 year old child can figure out how to open the spout. All they do is create hazards and frustrate people. Those who are ergonomic engineers know that the easiest way to make people injure themselves is to design something that frustrates the user. Congrats. Mission accomplished. Everyone who has ever actually used one of these has suffered frustration. It is YOUR thinking that is rigid and inflexible. Have you ever considered that not everything you're told has scientific, data based, statistical evidence to support it? That there is a social agenda behind nearly every law often not based in truth? Nope. I can tell that you have never even considered it.

While this method does work, it's far easier and a bit cheaper to buy a 10 pack of actual gas can vents off your favorite online seller, drill a 1/2" hole, and push one in. Voila, same vent as most cans came with 10 years ago. As a bonus, it only sticks out 3-4mm instead of hanging out to snag on stuff like a tire valve or drain petcock. :)

love your videos, make more i had a question. i recently acquired some telecom batteries similar to what you made your 1000ah bank from. 5 fiamm 12umtx180ft 198ah . anyway while on a solar power forum i was told that telecom batteries such as these are only meant to be deep cycled 6 or so times before they are scrapped and that i basically paid for someones hazmat disposal fee for paying 75 dollars each for them. before i bought them they were at 13.2-13.5 volts sitting on a pallet at the recycling center so i assumed that they are in working order much like the ones you had where some were able to exceed manufacturer specifications even though used and a few years into their lifespan. anyway so is there any truth to his statement? if i keep the cycling low discharging maybe to no lower than 11.8-12.2v can i expect a reasonable life from these batteries? thanks to anyone who might respond

Love your whole video especially the disclaimer at the beginning. Did this to my gas can. Works great. Or you could buy an EZ-pour kit for $10.00. LOL

Hey knurlgnar, what about self venting spouts like the one pictured here www.amazon.com/RotopaX-RX-SP-VENT-Self-Venting-Spout-Kit/dp/B004ETRWLS? We get them standard with our gas cans here in Canada. They actually work pretty good for lawnmowers and snowblowers, although they aren't as fast as the tradional ones for filling a car or truck tank. As for your fix - I've installed a faucet in an HDPE barrel a few years ago and it barely lasted a year before it came lose - had to add a coupling on the other side to secure it. That material isn't very tough at all.

Thanks a lot, bro. This is a really exciting gas can Hack. We share the same concept in our product.

Wrong washer for plastic, you should use a compression washer, either copper or much thinner steel or brass, around 16AWG, even better a washer with a single sided rubber gasket. Why you want to change a design, designed by engineers, and violate local laws is beyond me.

How about a simple one way valve, so that when standing by it won't let out any of the gasoline, but when you start to pour it lets in all the air you need?
@sivalley

A valve for this purpose would have to be ridiculously large to be sensitive enough to the tiny changes in pressure, hence why it's impractical and not used. Pressure changes are in the hundredths of inches (millimeters) water column pressure.

Typical EPA, the spills generated more fumes than any that might get loose from all the gas cans ever sold...I just use a golf T and appropriate size hole for vent...
@carlapeterchris

why did you use a lock washer? thoese valves have a tapered thread so that the more you screw it in, the tighter it gets.
@Starchface
@Starchface 7 лет назад
The lock washer is to prevent the valve from coming out when opened, not to provide a seal.

thats a shitty can... the nozzle is almost on the top.. you'd have to have that thing upside down to empty it... what happened to the good ole wedco with the nice vent on the back!!!!

This is how I fixed mine, drill a 1/2 hole, and a small hole in the vent, pop it in and you're done amzn.com/B00ZALITVG
