You know when a mate drops their car off, chucks you the keys and says "can you fix my ABS"? Well, the answer is yes, using remanufacturing, and in this case I get ACtronics to do the clever fixing stuff in their hi-tech facility.

Thank you Edd. Note to video editing dept. Please lower volume of filler music to at least the same level or a bit less than the spoken audio on the video. This example has it excessively loud in comparison. Change nothing else. Edd is awesome.

Great to see Edd back again! - Lovin' the magnetic fingers Edd! Also its easy to see why cars like this get scrapped off so easily - if you don't know how (or where to send the part) to fix it - as a new replacement part is more than the value of the car.

Can't help feeling like £1500 is pure price gouging - no way was that module worth such a significant fraction of the total new car cost, outrageous money. Great that there are firms out there that can actually fix things rather than just binning things off for no good reason. Bravo to Actronics.
@eddchina
@eddchina 10 месяцев назад

@robertbackhaus8911
@robertbackhaus8911 10 месяцев назад
Two ways to get spares for vehicles that have been around for a long time - one is that at the end of the car's production, have the OEM make many more than required, buy them, and store them in a well controlled warehouse for years - and then discard the ones that don't end up sold after storing them for a decade or two. The other is to get someone to spin up a production line for a small run. Neither of these options are cheap - I can see them needing to get - after retail markups - £1500 for the ones they sell to make the whole thing work. Fixing ones as they fail is a very good idea - but you need a decent thoughput to pay for the setup, and you also need the fault to not be an Application-Specific IC, or even just a more generic part that goes end-of-life, that is unavailable.
@imnotamechanic3491
@imnotamechanic3491 10 месяцев назад
Such a part is probably not that often needed, and by the time it's needed the car isn't worth much, so the owner will likely opt to get one off a scrapyard (looks like on ebay you can get one for around £100 or less), so even at a reasonable price of a few hundred quid, most people will opt for a used part on something not likely to fail. So then you have very small market, and as outlined above, to supply these years later costs lots. It's a shame companies like this don't offer a service to the individual though, plenty of competent mechanics who don't want to be 'stitched up on the labour rate'.
@maclauk
@maclauk 10 месяцев назад
20 years ago when I worked at a company manufacturing ABS units for the big car manufacturers the sale price to the VM was less than £100 for the whole ABS unit. £1500 is quite a markup.

Best money saving fix I've done. -5 hours searching and reading, until i found useful info on the internet. -5 min removing the module (easier access than on the Fiesta). -20 min carefully cutting it open. (Same cut as they did on the Fiesta module, but did with an exacto knife). -5 min to renew the cracked soldering (common problem apparently). -5 min to glue the lid back on with ABS-plastic glue. -5 min to put it back in the car again.

I've found most ABS problems to be either the sensors or the pickup rings. It is good to know that a module repair service exists which makes for a cost effective repair. I've had to have a couple of modules on my 2003 Volvo XC90 repaired which was a LOT cheaper then brand new ones form the dealer. It is good to see fresh content like this even if it is your mate's Fiesta.

This remanufacturing process is great for those parts that you either can’t get brand new at all or are prohibitively expensive at the main dealership; case in point, the ABS control module for my 2006 Buick Lucerne, which is an American Full Size Sedan (it’s considered an Executive Saloon in the UK, equivalent to a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes E Class)is still available at the main dealer for over $400US because they made 3 different part numbers of that module because they had 2 vastly different brake systems depending on trim level and engine choice (V6 or V8; the V8 models and the top trim got Stability Control and Brake Assist while the V6 models only got traction control) EDIT: I visited their website and apparently they can do Instrument clusters, HVAC Control Heads and Engine ECUs too!

To be fair, this is basically an ad for ACtronics’s services but still cool to see Edd back at again. And, ACtronics look like a seriously high tech outfit, with all that specialised machinery. Looking forward to the next episode with more Range Rover content!

Thanks, got to pay the bills somehow but without remanufacturing our modern classics might be scrap way too early. Next episode will indeed be on the Range Rover chassis…

That was a great insight. I had a problem with the same component on my old Honda Accord, the module also housed the VSA system (stability assist) and that had failed. My local mechanic did the same thing as a new module was £1200 at the time but sending the module off for repair was much cheaper. It was really interesting to see the process up close, thanks!

I get the impression that Edd has given up on the Range Rover and is now only going to pop up every so often to do adverts for companies like this one.

That's an especially clean example in the UK, UK cars probably match similar conditions to Midwest US cars in terms of rust.

I've no problem with the promo bit. We get to learn of companies and services that may be of use to us in the future, and Ed also earns a few bob. A win win in my thought process. We also get an education with Ed's expertise ? What's not to love 😘

Great to see some new content on this channel again. It would have been nice with some speak on the actronics video to explain what they are doing in each step. As mentioned elsewhere, the music was just in the way. I needed to get an abs unit for my motorcycle fixed a few years ago and tried looking for someone who could do it since a new original one was also around £2000 which is utterly ridiculous. I found a UK company that said they might be able to so I shipped it from DK to UK only for them to then say that they couldn't work on that particular unit. So I had to pay for return shipping to get it back. Not a very good experience. I asked a few local shops how they would repair my bike and they told me they would replace it with a new original part, so seems like they don't really care about repairing parts. In the end, I found a used unit on ebay for a reasonable price but I would have preferred to have my original refurbished since it was in much better cosmetic condition.

Great video, I have mixed emotions on reman. electronics, I had a reman. PCM fail in 2 months, then had the replacement reman. PCM last the rest of the cars life. $200 or pounds compared to $1500, I'll go with the reman. every time.. Oh I love the Fiesta theme music also.
