Fix Arch Linux Boot with arch-chroot

There was a time when, if I ran into an issue with Arch where it wouldn't boot, I would most likely have just wiped the disk and reinstalled. Thankfully, that's almost never necessary if you use chroot to access the non-booting system to fix the problem. This is a very brief look at how to use arch-chroot to do just that.
Note that I can't possibly account for all the possible reasons that your system might not boot so the point of this is to show how you boot from the installation media and access the broken system. From there, you need to figure out what the problem is using error logs , perhaps uninstall recently installed packages, and so on.

Hi Eric. My Manjaro distro was working and then stopped at the login. I checked RAM and ended up replacing it, but it still some login. I suspect this is to do with the auto update features of Manjaro tripping up on hardware config. What's the best way to fix this?

Hi Larry. I appreciate the feedback and am glad you are enjoying the videos! My everyday setup is dual booting Cinnamon and Plasma, both on a stock Arch base. I am a big fan of what the ArchLabs team is doing and do use it on my other computer. The flexibility of switching between the Openbox and i3 sessions is pretty fantastic and they have done an amazing job of integrating the two experiences.

I am trying to save my 6 years old install using this method, but there is one thing going wrong. I'm receiving the message "/mnt/boot: mount point does not exist"... But it does appear when I do the command to find the disks... What can be wrong? I used an Ubuntu live USB and my SSD card is there, the files are there... I am desperate!

Hi Eric, once upon a time I probably would have re installed, even today I might depends how much you've invested in to the current setup, I've also seen some demonstrations where people mount, I think it's /dev, /proc and /sys, is that the same thing? I'm sure there's also a command to regenerate the grub file, which would be the most common action in that situation I believe, Nice Vid mate, Thanks!!
@EricAdamsYT
@EricAdamsYT 4 года назад
Thanks Colin. You are correct that using the standalone chroot command requires a bit more effort like mounting additional partitions. The arch-chroot script does this for you so kudos to them for making it easier to use. The command to regenerate the grub.cfg file is 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' which uses the /etc/default/grub file. If you ever need to make changes to your boot settings this is where you can do so (although the output path for grub.cfg isn't a constant across all distros). In my case, I always have to add a parameter to set the sleep type on this laptop or it never goes to sleep.

Well not exactly Arch but my Endeavour installation got corrupted and even after its fixed, it just wont boot the second time.
@Bawkr
@Bawkr 4 месяца назад
the current official newest version of arch is no longer a live cd, just an install one. Pretty sure mine was live back in 2020 or so. That's annoying. Guess I will have to get an older one or something. My install lost it's boot link during Syu, 3 years behind on updates since I hadn't really used it in that long.

I was searching for a real grub rescue or install or what not. You did not break anything in the manner that break really means. You simply renamed an already existing file, very safely, and also very safely left it where it's at. That way it's easy to find and rename back to its "safe" working order. Try like, something like when the file does not exist. At all. ...but the video was fun to watch anyway. Intertaining. Made me forget that I have an install to rescue, or re-install. That's it. ;)

Hello Eric In fact for the kind of issue you've shown it is better to follow this: www.linux.com/tutorials/how-rescue-non-booting-grub-2-linux/ chroot is used when you don't get a grub or grub rescue shell and the first thing to do is have a look at dmesg and find the error(s) or some clue(s). Cheers

@@florin604 I think I understand what you mean. I did give an example. A contrived one that I purposely created but an example nonetheless. The point of the video was to demonstrate how to boot into the installation environment and fix something. There's no possible way I can know what specific issue someone is having so this at least get them started. From there, it's up to them to figure out how to fix their specific issue. I think I'll change the title so it's less confusing. Thanks for helping me understand why you think it's useless.
