What a great video on a use if the RGB mixer. And yes, it's true that it doesn't get enough love. I have seen in the past youTubers using the RGB mixer and pushing the levels of each up to 2.00 to turn up saturation, it should be pointed out that this does increase the saturation, but using it that way is no different than just increasing the saturation i n the primary tools from 50 to 100. But this technique of borrowing from the green to push the trace over, is brilliant and something that I have seen done before, but completely forgot about. I think fixing bad footage is an art. And I bet it is of great interest to filmmakers starting to do their own color grades. Especially in the documentary type films where there is virtually no set up time or gear, and worse no "retaking" of the footage. I really enjoyed this one Darren. Nice job.

Thanks Jim, appreciated. Yes I was amazed so little info on the RGB mixer out there. Of course agree sat would be done elsewhere as easier - I was merely proving a point here. As with my other nodes - not my normal node tree but it just seemed a shame to leave it there - I almost couldn't help myself but to correct the shot further and thought would be nice for those who stuck around longer than 5 minutes to see!! Good to be back - it's been. few weeks since I did an episode and intend to get a few out soon now and get back on it. Appreciate your comments as always!! Thanks, Darren.

I personally liked the extra bit at the end. It helps drive home that you were able to save a shot through a solid baseline of using the RGB mixer. I think in general your videos are very focused and your instinct for what to include is excellent.

Luke - thank you - that comment means a lot - I was tempted to stop at what the RGB mixer did but couldn't resist making shot better - youtube prefers shorter videos so I went against the stats and did what I want - as always do!! Thank you for commenting - really helpful to me to know what my audience wants! Darren.

It's nice that you're sharing priceless information & tutorials to those who are maybe self teaching and can't afford to pay for lessons. When pandemic started, i did not know anything about video editing but had to fix my daughter's videos which very very important to her. Tried hard to balance the color and minimize the color cast in a free online software. The color cast was still there but my daughter's friend was very happy for the result but was just better for me. Started to know about coloring from some locals video editors tutorial on youtube. When i knew Davinci Resolve is the proper software for video color editing, i found your video about color page tips for beginner and watched all your video & Cullen Kelly ever since. This video, again, is the best explanation for a beginner like me to understand more better about rgb mixer tool. Be careful using this. I feel like this video set me back months. I'm probably using it wrong but this is such a bad example. The entire vector scope is pushed directly at yellow. If it is even slightly in between the primary colors then this technique is almost impossible to use. Maybe Darren could make a video where the vectorscope is orange just to clear this up.

This was really, REALLY, useful, it seems it's a similar tool to the Photoshop Channel Mixer (which is incredibly good for fixing extreme dominants). If it can be used with also some Lab readout it would been even better (I am so use to correct stills images by looking at the number in the info panel in PS that I still struggle evaluating colour just using the scopes...). Amazing video, thank you so much!

I once had a shot from a Sony FX6 that was massively underexposed and I remember using the RGB mixer to fix some of the color casts that were present in the footage. Also I had a lot of problems with Neon Colours. Normally I'd use the neon suppression LMT for that, but I don't have Resolve Studio on my machine from work... I ended up getting a somewhat useable shot by using the RGB Mixer. And I always thought a colourist what lynch me for what I did in there lmao

Hi Darren, I have a general question regarding professional filming. In order to get the color temperature right, do they always film using a color palette or color chart so that the colorist can properly balance? I would guess no for indoor film b/c there is complete control of lighting. I would guess they would for outdoor filming in mixed lighting conditions. Part of my reason for asking is that some of my recent footage was outdoors but with an overcast. In post and after the CST was applied, it looked skewed. So, I used the RGB tool to help me align it. During this process, it dawned on me that I could have used a color chart. Thoughts on this?

Thanks for the Video! I just started playing around with Davinci Resolve a few months ago and been watching a lot of your Videos :D You are by FAR my favorite Channel to watch when it comes to everything color related. I fly FPV Drones for fun and I love the fact that "just some color" can make SOOO MUCH of a difference! The last Footage I got had a heavy red tint (sunset+nd32 on a 8-bit action cam) and I tried centering the Vectorscope while playing with the balances of the primarys and offset. Didn't feel right to me and I wasn't completly satisfied with what I got. I'll revisit the Footage with the RGB Mixer in mind and see what it can do :D Here is an unlisted 10s example Video of what I've done for anyone wanting to judge how bad the Footage was and how bad I did trying to correct it :D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-50j7OwwGy68.html I definitely have no idea what I am doing but I love learning new things, playing around with them and understanding at least some of it ;)

I think there is footage which is simply unrecoverable in terms of color correction, tonal correction, or tonal cast removal. I recently used a high quality digitizer on an old 8mm tape. Used advanced de-interlacing, advanced noise reduction and sharpening... and those aspects look good. Some AI upscaling experiments often times lead to astonishing uplift in quality. But, of course, PAL analog 8mm video tape has a low chrominance resolution. The problem is that the video is basically a muddy mix of browns, greens, reds, and some other hues. I can boost the dynamic range to bring out detail from shadow, and get the thing looking reasonable... but the color adjustments are just hopeless. I started with Lumitri in Premiere Pro, and have installed Davici Resolve just because of this video. But... it eludes me on how anything can help with color when working with this kind of footage. Therefore, I think a lot of older videos, probably to do with the camera they were shot on and the white balance setting, just lack information in the video to fix any of it.

Thankyou for this, I am a master at producing bad footage , I'm a natural I can do it without trying. .. The other day I was attempting to produce some test footage with the bmpcc original I had iso set at 400 set an aperture of 2.8 24fps and using sigma 18-35 with a vnd and ir cut filter The zebra's were set to 100% so i dialed the nd to a point where the zebra stripes just disappeared from the sky, unfortunately the result was a very dark foreground and any attempt to raise the midtones and shadows just resulted in a noisy mess. So is there anyway to keep the highlights and keep the foreground well exposed , more normal not GOT battle black?

I tried hardly to analyse how pushing green into a yellow shot can balance it. but still can t get my head around the black magic you just did🤣 if I didn t see the result here. I would say that this will make the shot worse 😅😅. my head still tells me that this manipulation must put more green to it can you make a short to explain the maths behind what happened plz?

Wow, this was really great. I usually ignored the RGB mixer, but not anymore. I didn't realize what a powerful little tool this is.

What a great video. I was stuck with offset and thought I had it all but something was often off in extreme situations. Thank you so much Darren for sharing your infinite knowledge ❤
