Fix Bright Spots on LG LED Television (LCD TV with LED Backlighting)

LG LCD TV screens may develop 1 or more bright spots after a few years. This will appear as white circles and be most noticeable when viewing brighter scenes. The white spots are caused by clear plastic circular lenses inside the screen coming loose. I believe these lenses are used to distribute the light evenly across the screen and they come loose because the quality of glue used to hold them in place is not very good.
If you have a bit of technical skill, a screwdriver set and good quality glue you can fix this problem yourself. It's a fairly time consuming process as there are many screws and several layers that need removing to get to the lenses.
Here's how you fix the white spot problem. Make sure you switch the power off and unplug all cables before you do anything else. Attempt it at your own risk and don't be sad if your TV doesn't work afterwards. Good luck!
Update: Thanks for all of the comments and subscriptions. Here is some additional information based on feedback in the comments:
1. When you disassemble your TV, make sure you are careful and note how components are ordered. There are several sheets (mostly white) before you get to the lenses/reflectors. These sheets need to go back in the correct order so try not to separate them. You may like to photograph each stage as you go so you can refer to the photos when it's time to reassemble.
2. The most common questions in the comments are about glue. I used Tarzan's Grip but others have had success with different glues. As long as they are strong glues that dry clear you shouldn't have a problem. Here are other glue suggestions - Clear Gorilla glue, Super glue, Krazy glue, E6000, T6000, B7000.
3. It was commented that you can use clear adhesive tape instead of glue to hold the lenses in place. Just make sure it is strong tape that will stay clear over time. Crystal Clear Gorilla tape was recommended and I'm sure there are similar strong tapes if you do your research.
4. Some people mention keeping the components clean. I did not need to clean mine but you could use a soft cloth to remove dust from the screen and sheets if required. There was also mention of using screen cleaner on the screen.

A great help. I have a 60 inch LG with heaps of spots. Successfully repaired it with your instructions with a small difference. I didn’t need to unplug the ribbon cables from the circuit board. At step 7 I lifted the TV onto its side, removed the border frame, then put the TV on its back to continue the disassembly. I used Gorilla glue and left it to cure 24 hours. All back together and no more spots. Thanks again.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I thought I was about to be in the market for a new TV......but, with your video, I spent $1.79 on a tube of super glue, a couple of hours of my time on a rainy Sunday and viola! TV is back with no more bright spots! Well done, sir!

Thanks for the video! My son and I just did the repair on his 42LF5600. It has 32 lenses, and EVERY SINGLE ONE had fallen off. We did the repair using clear gorilla clue. It is much much better! We still have one somewhat bright spot, and another slightly dim spot. Reading the many comments below, it's possible that we didn't align two of the lenses perfectly, or perhaps used a little bit too much glue on those. But this is so much better than the 4 by 8 grid of bright spots that we had at the start.

@@westozexplorers1885 no problem! One quick question though, I notice on some white screens I can still see the white marks slightly (even though the diffuser hasn't dropped). Is this because I put the white boards / perspex in wrong order or the light "burned" it in?

I just got a bright spot on my TV and I think this is why. I'll be honest I'm not going to repair it on my own and I'll be calling someone given how easily technology seems to break when I handle it lol. Thank you for making this so simple to follow! I know nothing about televisions but just fixed my mother-in-law's 42-inch LG TV following your step-by-step instructions, and now it's like new again. Maybe better than new, since I used super glue. It took just a couple of hours. There were only six of the lenses still in place. Thanks for this video. I pick up TV's off the street that have been thrown out, repair them and give them away. Helps people who can't afford a tv get one and also keeps stuff out of landfill. The one I picked up yesterday must have been dropped as every lens had detached. This video helped get it repaired and so save it from being junked. I'll remember about LG lens's crappy glue in the future.

Back 8 months later to say this was a great guide I was able to do it 8 months later without needing to watch this again. I suggest for anyone doing this to get a magnet bucket that way you can group the screws so they don’t roll around and get lost. It was a life savor when putting stuff together. BE EXTREMELY GENTLE WITH THE INSIDE PARTS.

Very good instruction. I have just noticed one spot yesterday (Jan 3) in the upper left of my Samsung TV. I have had it for about 4 trouble free years. So I will be trying this as soon as I can. I think another Very Important Step to include is to use a soft cloth to remove any dust/ lint from the White "sheets" as you replace them - ensuring you put them back in correct order (usually about 3 or 4 white ones) then the darker one you see when you look at the screen. I will likely re-glue all of the lenses so I hopefully wont have to do this again..... Another hint as well, a small scratch on one of the white sheets can cause a white spot on the screen as well, you can clean these up with a small dob of toothpaste on a cotton bud, then clean up with the normal screen cleaner liquid, ensuring to dry the sheet off before you re-assemble the TV.

It worked!!! Tank you very much. A suggestion I can do is to never lift and never touch the screen. Lift the TV leaving it on the table and then place the TV on the screen from above. This should minimize the risk. In my case the screen was malpositioned and ther was a little brighter corner, but I managed to push it in position from outside with a flat head screwdriver. Dangerous move, I know, but it was just less than a mm and it worked.

Thanks so much for your tutorial. With yours and one by Subodh Soni, I was able to repair my LG 42LB6500 with this exact same problem, but instead of glue, I used Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape. I thought I'd mention the tape in case anyone else would like to know and use that method instead. I'm not sure if this tape is available in other countries (I'm in Australia). I chose this tape as I did quite a bit of research into a clear tape that could withstand heat and not yellow and that held a tough long lasting grip. I did not ever want to repair this problem ever again! I picked the tape up at Bunnings for $16.80. The reason I had to use your tutorial with the other was because I couldn't remember the order of the white sheets. I had the flimsy thinner ones fortunately in order but I wasn't sure if the thicker piece of what looked like frosted perspex, went on the top or the bottom of those sheets. Fortunately in Subodh's video, it shows him removing these in more detail and I was able to work it out. Also, I used his method to remove the lcd panel which was using suction cups. I just didn't trust myself doing it your way! Thanks so much again and best regards from Australia. Em. x Just to add, I put tape on ALL of the lenses just in case they dropped off at some later stage!

Thanks for the detailed comment Emmy and I'm glad you fixed your TV. Wow, I didn't know you could use clear Gorilla Tape instead of glue, nice work! I know the tape you're talking about as I've bought the same stuff from Bunnings to patch a hole in my tent.
@emmyryan6592
@emmyryan6592 4 года назад
@@westozexplorers1885 Thank-you :) Yes the tape is great and it is temperature rated so I believe this fix will last the lifetime of the teli and your tent :) In his 2nd video on this repair, Subodh Soni recommended using tape instead of glue so I went with that although I didn't like the thought of using just ordinary sticky tape. The repair using the Gorilla tape went brilliantly. I didn't need to wait for the glue to cure so I could put it back together immediately. Also, your video in comparison to his was much easier to watch. His made me feel seasick there was so much movement! Thank-you once again. Em.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I had 5 bright spots in the centre of the screen. I dismantled everything successfully and removed every lense as suggested. Just a word of advice. Don’t use too much gorilla glue as any overspill shows up white when the tv is put back together. In hindsight I wish I had used a thinner glue like superglue. Be careful you don’t put the screen back the wrong way round like I did.I couldn’t understand why the ribbons didn’t line back up correctly. I have a little white triangular bit with all straight fine coloured lines in the top right hand corner. I may have damaged the screen or I’ve seen on here that I may not have aligned the ribbons back properly in their 2 connectors. All in all I’m very pleased with the results and as I only use it in my holiday home I won’t be forking out another 450 euros for a replacement. Thanks again.

As you will see near the end of the video you remove the 'flexable dark' screen which is really a flexible PCB. On my 2014, yup 10 years old the screen was brittle and internally my screen broken into fragments when I gently removed it. Moral of story, a new 50 inch LG is $300ish, so you might just replace the TV. However, it's awesome to see how its made.
