I'm typically ALL about repairing items and not letting useful things end up landfills. I've gotta say, somehow I never once thought about repairing a can opener. I'm a bit ashamed of that, but I won't be moving forward. Thank you for this!
Yes!!! 🔥 I have a can opener I got from my mom. It's older than me, and as far as I'm concerned, there is no replacement that can measure up. Thanks for showing me how to save it!
My mother & mother-in-law’s openers are each older than my and me. They work perfectly well! Back in our growing up years canna were much more bfrequently used. I seldom use one and I replace it at least yearly, with a top brand! ARGH!
Swing away has sadly moved to china but are still really good. EZ DUZ IT took over their operations and are made in USA if that matters to you. Both are bombproof.
Regular pliers don’t work to hold the gear still, and it also seems like I’m just ruining the gears teeth trying to hold it still while attempting to remove the handle. My old clamping pliers or whatever it’s called broke but I guess I’ll have to just buy a new one and see if that works (?)
I bought a new one and just before A binned that old one, I thoroughly cleaned the old one with a fine wire brush and soap. Guess what - I now have two openers that work perfectly!
Just bought a can opener and just realized I been using it with rust for a week. Am I ok is it safe??? That can opener u got looks rusty? This can opener is 3 weeks old from Walmart
Progressive tightening causes the problem. The thumb handle is turned clockwise when opener is used. That affects the spring so that the gear (teeth) moves further away from the blade. So by keeping the gear stable while moving the thumb handle counter-clockwise, the spring is loosened and the gear is brought closer to the blade. Now the thumb handle is to be tightened just a bit (clockwise).
I did a banana steel on a $17 Walmart can opener to $1.95 years ago & that opener didn't last but a week compared to my dollar tree $1.00 can opener that lasted me 2 weeks. I've boughten 3 can opener after that & went back to eating all fresh foods homemade foods bc of this cheap sh!+. Washing dishes someone had the broke ass can opener out. I have some extremely heavy duty metal I took off a table saw I was going to use it to make a shit gun but I'll make a can opener. I RU-vid how to ,this came up. Thx but no thx
They have made a lot of changes to the canning process since the 80s. I just got French cut green beans for my thanksgiving and they were wonderful, no different from frozen and no salt added
