How to pry apart an audio mixer fader which is noisy, crackling or cutting out. In this video I open end clean the fader of a Tascam 244, a vintage analogue multitrack cassette recorder, but the same principles would apply with other manufacturers of fourtrack recorder such as Fostex or Yamaha, or with faders for mixers made by any number of manufaturers. Depending on the design of the unit you are working on, it might be necessary to desolder the component first, but due to the design of this generation of Portastudio, it is possible to remove the rear plate without soldering.

This is exactly where I’m at with my 244. I was extremely lucky in scoring it for $30 USD on Craigslist, but sometimes you get what you pay for; it was absolutely coated with nicotine stains. I would spray the outer case with Windex and just watch brown liquid get darker and darker as it ran down into the paper towels underneath. I was lucky the 246 was from a smoke-free home, but I paid quite a bit more. Any suggestions about deep cleaning the pots of the channels for the 244? I get crazy-loud pops if I move some of them, and I noticed the metal shafts within each knob are coated with nicotine. I am thinking Deoxit D5, but if you recommend something for nicotine, I’m all ears. Also, have you ever recapped a Tascam? I am going to do so with my 144s and am excited but nervous to do it.

I cleaned the pots in the preceding video to this one, if you go to my channel's splash page then the uploads section you should find it pretty easily. The pops you're hearing will go away if you get some contact cleaner and compressed air through the recess, followed up with an appropriate lube. D5 is probably a better product for the job but we're a stingy breed, the Scots, so I just use the fader lube for everything and it seems to work !

Replacing capacitors on a board - I've done it as necessary for smaller boards but not for a whole machine. As these things get older I guess I will eventually have to do it as a matter of course but I've shied away from doing so this far for two reasons - one it seems like mad, mad boring work and two though I try to keep my labour charge in line with UK minimum wage to make these things affordable for other musicians on a budget, and If I did a full recap as standard I'd have to dramatically increase my prices to reflect the extra labour...as it is I still get snarky messages from broke, post-marxist ebay browsers accusing me of being a bourgeois vampire etc etc so I'm keen to postpone the additional hate-mail for as long as possible!

Tetrakan Supermonobloc I can tell you I’m far for of a pragmatist than Post-Marxist... I have a signal issue question involving my 144; After a few tests and a deep clean, I realized only odd tracks were making it onto tape, even though I could clearly hear the instruments in the mixer at the time of recording. So somewhere in the chain, the 2 & 4 signal is being cut close to the tape. Any idea how to hunt that down?

@@BogoEN Not specifically because i only ever worked on this model 3 or four times and all but once there was so much going on with the transport I never got to the electrics, and though I have the schematics (they're free to download from my blog btw) I haven't spent any time with them. Assuming the electrical topology is similar to the 244 then the signal is getting through the mixer channel to the stereo bus okay, so you can start tracing the signal after the pan pot; See if you're getting a signal at the input and output of the record enable switch; the input and output of the DBX encoder; the input and output of the record amplifier; check the bias oscillators for those channels have a strong output of the correct frequency (probably printed on the PCB); there will be a relay that lets the bias into the play/record heads during recording but blocks it during playback - check whether bias is getting through that relay in record mode. That'll helpnarrow dopwn which areas of the boards to recap or replace components.

Tetrakan Supermonobloc Thanks alot, those are helpful places to start. So just to hog your comments section a bit more, I’m currently on the 244 and have finally cleaned 🧼 the nicotine out of channels 1-4 via this video etc., but realized that the master fader and record/cue switches are underneath the recording and playback amps to the left, covered in a 🐀 rats’ nest of wires. Have you ever pulled out the rec/play amps to clean these components?
