In this video I show you how to remove the front face of the plastic case of the Tascam 244. This is something you will need to do in order to change VU meter bulbs, clean or repair the shuttle switches and plastic shuttle buttons, repair the power switch. It is also a helpful step if you have a very dirty or neglected unit which needs a deep clean.
EDIT jUNE 2020 - You'll see in the comments below several folks saying they can't get their face plate off without removing two heavy brass screws with long shanks located in between the record and playback circuit boards ( the two board orientated vertically in the centre of the unit). I thought the long shank brass screws screw into the metal chassis and not the plastic case beyond it , therefore they are mentioned in my video about removing the record/playback PCBs and not in this one... I don't know if i was just plain wrong about this all along, or whether there are slight variants on the contruction of these, but either way please be aware that it may be necessary to remove these two screws in addition to those pictured in the video. Thanks to everyone who commented about this.

Great videos! will you be doing any on the 246? I just picked up one :) I'm trying to remove the front panel, i followed the manual and removed the 9 screws but the cover is still held somewhere! I think the manual is for the US model and my machine is the euro model...any ideas where the hidden screws are? cheers

@@Blackmambalini I gave one here but it's a US model, and it's been at least 18 months since I dismantled one....did you get the log screw through the rec/playback PCB? I will be doing teardown videos for the 246 eventually

@@Tetrakan yeah, got that long screw, but still no joy, feels like its still fixed on all 4 corners! I'll leave the cleaning to a later date!..and yes, would be great to see a 246 tear down at some point. thanks!

Thanks soooo much for all the videos! I found a 244 last Tuesday at a thrift shop for $10.00 and it was in horrible shape. Belts and all rubber turned to goo and 7 out of the 9 function buttons broken inside the unit. Some colored caps missing. After another $50.00 invested, I looked at all your videos endlessly (I’m an elementary school music teacher with a week off for the holidays) and everything worked (lots of dirty fingers). I had an old 4 track tape from the mid 90’s I am able to finally remix and digital save it. Now I purchased another unit on eBay for $100.00 with the record light staying lite. Hopefully I can monkey around with that when I receive and restore that. If not, at least I’ll have plenty of parts. Have a great day 🎶👍🏻

How did you fix the function buttons

Go to my youtube channel page, theres a horizontal section labelled tear down by model containing a playlist on the 244, it includes videos on how to fix this.

@@Tetrakan Thanks heaps your channel is such a great resource, however I think I might need to replace the tactile switches under the function buttons but was wondering if anyone else had done the same thing. I don't think you have a video covering specifically that or maybe I haven't looked hard enough :)

Question - where is the Plug for the UV Meters on the Tascam 246? it doesn't work in the same way as in the 244 I guess? best Oliver

Hi Oliver, I'm in the process of moving house right now and my 246 and 246 parts are kind of hard to access right now, but from memory: There is a black rectangular patchbay/hub on the rear panel, between the power transformer and the mixer channel circuit boards - pretty much all of the buss audio signal cables pass through this. On the external side this is where the tape outs are located, on the internal side the monitor boards and meter signals interface. I seem to remember there are about 5 longinsh (like 6 or more pins) K molex headers in this hub. Thats the signal side of things, but the power for the meter daughterboards (the little master faders and larger channel fadfers are on two sperate boards as I recall) connects to the circuitboard with the recfitication etc on it at the base of the transformer, I believe that power cable is to the rear of that PCB, on the far side of the cassette transport as you look at the underside with the lower plastic case off. The schematic and service manual for that model are on my blog (see video description) if you want to check, good luck.

Hello (again), great videos, thanks very much. One thing please, when it came to the final popping off of the case my UK original from new 244 has 2 long 'brass' smooth but threaded screws which are crucial to releasing the casing (seemingly). Positioned right in the middle of the machine and about 2" long. If I hadn't undone them I'm sure the case would have cracked in half, I could see the plastic angling in the middle (which is how I found them) I have photos but not sure if I can post them here or not. This is more to ask if we have different aged models or why these screws were in mine? As and when you might have a minute...Best wishes, Cheers, Phil.

Yeah several people commented about this, not sure if there are variants or if I am just plain wrong about this but I've amended the video description and added a pinned comment to reflect the experiences of yourself and other viewers, thanks for watching.

Getting the front cover off was an important step in the process of accessing the buttons. How do you do that? You went through a time warp.

FYI - there's also a front case screw which is in between the central switch section, on a long stem.

I'm pretty sure this screw you mention attaches the record and playback PCBs tp the chassis but does not pass through to the plastic case?

It connected to the front plate on mine too. You can see there is machine-threading in the screwpost on the faceplate. Great video!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I dunno if I was just wrong to begin with or the design varies with age but in light of these comments I'll put a pinned comment and something in the description drawing folks' attention to these screws.
