In this episode, I want to discuss about Damaged Scratched or Rusted Leaking Forks, and How to Fix them on a Budget.
Instead of the JB weld can use Novol termo epoxy putty - Much cheaper but works as well.

I got some buffing discs that go on a drill along with some different grit "clay" and applied it to my forks. What a difference! A lot of time the older bikes either have old clear coat that has yellowed due to UV or some say it is the anodizing process. At either rate, I strip it off with acetone and 0000 steel wool and buff it with the pads and clay. Great video!

Hi Alinel, yes, you can use a charger or just connect 2 wires to a simple battery 1.5v, the process will be slower but it also works well, and after zinc plating don't forget to deactivate the acid that is used for plating, for that you can wash your fork with water with baking soda or use a good degreaser.

Hello Rogelio, thanks for watching, it depends on how well all the procedures were performed and on the quality of the filler used, for a long time I recommend zinc plating with orthophosphoric acid (it's soldering acid) or copper plating, and also use "novol thermo epoxy resin" as a filler, it is rock hard and holds up very well.

Absolutely fantastic and so well presented! Thank you. 30mins ago I was considering buying a new chromium fork for my m/c as I just replaced the seals and whilst assembling the last one I inadvertently damaged the surface (near the oil seal) and created a dipple which I sanded the burs off so it wouldn't damage the seals but of course I still have the dipple which now I will try applying a spot of steel epoxy and sand down to a lovely smooth finish - okay, that's the idea :) Anyway, thanks again

Excellent video thank you, it's given me the confidence to try myself on a Suzuki RV125 Van Van fork stanchion - I tried new seals first but they did not stop the leak. The sanding is now complete, rubbing compound next then to pound store for cheap batteries - most other shops only seem to stock Alkaline now.

@AVVGCustomstudio
@AVVGCustomstudio 3 года назад
Hi, thank you for the comment, it really doesn't matter, usually, I don't drain the battery, the most important is to use a zinc battery not alkaline, and after zinc plating don't forget to degrease the fork or wash it with a mix of water+baking soda to stop the acid reaction. Good luck and thank you for watching!

It's been quite a while since the most recent previous comment, so, I hope you are doing well. Great video, I will be using this technique. I have a couple of questions. First, why did you choose nail polish after proving superglue was stronger? My second question is about other fork repair techniques. Have you ever repaired a vintage motorcycle fork slider by separating the cast parts and replacing the outer tube? Sorry, if my first question was previously answered, but no time to read all the comments.

Hi Andrew, In the video at 6:32 on a half fork I used nail polish, on the other half I used super glue, I used both of them to show that after smoothing it out the difference between them will be almost invisible. BUT super glue and nail polish is the most budget that you can do if there is no money to buy an epoxy glue, the best filler from what I tried are "Novol termo epoxy putty" This video it's a step-by-step guide where I'm showing all the methods how it can be done, and this fork tube I used just as a testing part to show the process. In the preview at the end of the video, you can see that in the next video I will restore the forks for my "Two-Stroke Dream" project, and there I will use epoxy glue. I hope I clearly explained, If there are more questions, ask more, I will try to help.

Hi, you need to wrap positive wire around zinc battery and also fix with it the cotton pad negative connecting to the part, also you will need to prepare acid electrolyte (or can use phosphoric acid that are used for soldering) infuse the cotton pad and with light non-stop no pressure movements wipe along the damaged part until zinc will coat it all. After you finished you will need to degrease the fork or wash it with a mix of water with baking soda to stop the acid reaction.

@AVVGCustomstudio
@AVVGCustomstudio 3 года назад
Hi Tim, seems to be an adhesion problem, It may be a degreasing problem, you can try to use another degreaser, try acetone Another problem may be the temperature of the part, almost all adhesives don't stick to parts that temperature is lower than 15 °C / 59 °F, make sure that your part temperature is above that all the time until the glue will cure. Do not use fast curing adhesives, at least 12-24 hours of curing time. I use "Novol termo epoxy putty" and it cures at 20°C 2-3 days, at 40°C - 12 hours. Usually, these are the most common problems, I hope I helped with the solution to the problem, thanks for watching!

Hi Danial ! After zinc plating, you need to degrease the fork and after that to fill the damaged area, I tried a lot of stuff as a filler, and "JB weld" (slow version - set time 4-6 hours) and "Novol Termo Epoxy Putty" proved to be best . "Novol" is the best in the ratio of price/quantity/quality After filling the damaged area you need to sand it, I start sanding with 600 grit, after that 800, 1200, 2000, and 4000 Just after that, polishing it If u have more questions, leave comments, I'll be happy to help
