How To Repair Fork Stanchion Scratch With Epoxy Resin

Crashing on your bike sucks! Especially if you are unlucky enough to scratch your fork, air shock or dropper seat-post stanchion tube. Scratches pass through the seals and can damage them, or can act as a little pocket to collect dirt and grime which can make it's way into the internals. So it's best to repair it if possible.
Note: Repairing stanchion tubes is highly delicate work, great care should be taken, and should only be carried out with specific tools and materials.

I’d probably tape around the epoxy before sanding so I didn’t sand unwanted areas
@Ferrari255GTO
@Ferrari255GTO Год назад
Technically you shouldn't, the tape would leave a gap between the surface of the stanchions and the epoxy, wich means that once you're done you will have lined up the epoxy with the tape, not with the forks. It would work to get rid of the biggest bump of epoxy but you would need to remove it to finish it properly
@rider65
@rider65 Год назад
You could use a little petroleum jelly instead of tape to make sure that you don't sand outside the preferred lines and scratch up the stanchions that are not in need of repair.
@cup_and_cone
@cup_and_cone Год назад
In order to properly repair it, you have to feather the repair into the existing coating. There's no way around it...you are going to sand into the coating no matter what.
@Simon1279.
@Simon1279. Год назад
@@cup_and_cone Agree also because sendhit itself suggests to make the sanding in the sliding direction of the fork for better results and it is what i did and for some magic the anodization after the application of the finishing paste did not show any kind of sandpaper scratch at all.

Way too much epoxy resin here... You should use a needle or a toothpick to only apply small amount of resin on the scratches. You would save a huge amount of sanding time. In this kit, they also provide polishing paste that helps to get a very nice and smooth finish. I've used it on my Sid and the result is perfect.

I'm a mountain biker and a knife maker. The knife making part gives me epoxy experience and I knew as soon as you said epoxy it would work. But not like that. No close ups of the results since I assume you Aldo know you put too much resin. I know from personal experience that much resin take an hour to sand down carefully. I assume you were not careful scratched it up and did not want to show it.
@stormeporm
@stormeporm Год назад
So how would you do it with epoxy?
@chaselilly8541
@chaselilly8541 Год назад
@stormeporm the issue was they used too much. I'd do the same but wipe the epoxy off. The scratches would get full with little to sand. Then I'd probably sand stating with 600 lightly until smooth.

I used a Stanley blade to remove any burrs then car body filler and sanded It down with 2000 grit wet and dry. Been fine for 12 months now
@reefbloke
@reefbloke Год назад
Now I’ve not done this myself but de-nibbing the resin with a new sharp razor blade( not a Stanley blade) by holding the blade flat to the stantion and slowly de-nibbing the resin without digging into the station should give a finish that requires very little to no sanding . Maybe someone should try this on an older pair of forks as it’s a method I’ve used for years for de-nibbing car paint runs or stone chip touch ups

Conveniently only wide shots of the 'fixed' fork en no closeups? Putting on huge drops of epoxy and sanding them down with course 150 grit paper will never yield good results. This reallt isn't good advice and I would suggest that you refrain from giving 'expert' advice on subjects you guys are obviously no experts at.

I just use clear coat that you get in a bottle for touch up jobs. Works well then once set I use a sharp razer to knock off the high spots & make it level no sanding needed. If there is still a little bit i'll use 1500-2000grit more like a polish.

I've done this with sand paper wrapped around a paddle pop stick and dyed black resin and polished the repair and turned out perfect and hardly notice it .

Sand paper glued or fixed to a plexiglass block would be less likely to bend or fold past the epoxy and scratch the tube. That foam block would be difficult for accuracy.

Tried this kit on a small scratch on my black stanchion and i would say it really works but: the black resin won't in any way hide the scratch i don't know why. But if you try to feel the scratch with your finger nails you definitely don't, before the treatment i was able to feel the scratch by passing my nails on it. So works great but my own question is: how much will it lasts?

The grit size is incorrect in the video. Do not use 150, this would likely ruin the stanchion even more, but 1,500. You can guess in the video that one zero is missing

Don't think died it never really got off the ground their Tech side of the channel is not really based in science it's just a bunch of guys and gals trying to do ad hoc or on-the-fly repairs. They're not trained mechanics they don't use any science-based methods for testing or application implementation. I mean bless them they try but they usually fail more than they succeed. They just don't do the proper research and if they are doing research there certainly looking and reading at improper incorrect sources information. I'm not sure where they glean their research from but it's usually absolutely garbage. I give them credit for trying but they really do mislead a lot of people on the tech side
