Looks good! I love working in mixed media, too. I will also do work in just one medium, but just letting loose and mixing whatever comes to mind is the best. I love starting out with a rough idea and just seeing where things will take me. Sometimes this leads me to discover supplies in my stash that I had entirely forgotten about. Stuff that I bought and put away without ever even trying it. Then one day I think that I need a specific something and remember. Mixed media art and supply hoarding are perfect together! 😸

Wow!!! That's so awesome!!! I love the combination of this three techniques!!! Because I love Panpastels, watercolors, and colored pencils!!! This is a wonderful idea!!! I order the Liquid White Colored pencils, from Pearl Barnish in Etsy, if you have trouble to get the touch of texture and titanium white, that is a great alternative, and is totally archival!!! Thank you Lindsay!❤️💜🧡

Nice work! Glad to know about the white texture color product. I will def give it a try! I've been very frustrated at times with putting in highlights or erasing too much and then putting down some white as a base to build back on (it works sometimes.) I want to use my Pan Pastels more...they're so beautiful But to use them alone would be difficult for detail work, as you know. I have that gorgeous teal color in Pan Pastels and it is so super lovely. And yes, they are pricey but a little goes a very long way!

A while ago I tested & rated about 15 different mediums to decide which one is going to give me the darkest, most even black on my mixed media work on paper. (I'm going to make a video with my results, but haven't gotten around to it yet.) I don't have pan pastels, but I tested soft pastel. While it was a gorgeous most matte and velvety black of all, applying fixative over it added the sheen :( and it was just an added step I don't like to bother with. So my ultimate choice for matte black ended up being - gouache. But pastel is best for a soft focus look on backgrounds.

Hullo Lindsay, a truly beautiful and quite lovely painting! You are so right about your lights washing out the color! It is so much brighter at the finish! I am surprised that you have made an upload with the power troubles in the north eastern part of the states! Thank you for sharing this project. I am still reluctant to add anything to my “watercolor paintings” I have no problem if my mindset is this is a mixed media artwork, I slap down anything that would work or make it look better! I still have that voice in my head if it was supposed to be a watercolor painting session, my Gran is telling me what I can and cannot do! We all are traveling down that road of discovery and will fight our own demons and struggle on the journey of creation. Thank you for sharing your art journey with us. You are truly kind and encouraging to one and all!

#TipsForPencils As for colored penciles budget wise for lightfast; it depends on where you live; where I live polychromo's are more affordable then derwent; I have the full set of poly's but keep in mind they are very nice on pastelmat for layering (but they are not opaque), keep their point really long ( I use a dhale sharpener ; it even get's my prisma's in a sharp point, wich is fairly impressive given they break fast. ) If you are on a budget and want to try derwent I would suggest use the drawing set of 24; specially if you combine it with wc; I have not seen a complain anywhere on that set and it's a nice set if you are in to landscape, wildlife and nature. For botanicals I would handpick singles from the lightfast range that way you can expand from there; and the drawing set will fill in your foliage. It's a pitty derwent doesnt have the drawing set in a set of 24 with all kind of hard to mix colors for flowers; I would totally buy that. For beginners; start slow. Dont set the bar to high or it will demotivate you; colored pencils have a LONG learning curve; longer than watercolor. But Im in awe of artists who purely work with colored pencil for a living, such a labour of love it is..
@NelaDunato
@NelaDunato Год назад
I second Derwent Drawing for portraits, though I do love the Polychromos earth tones too. Sadly their reds, violets, and yellows don't stand up to the sunlight test, despite their supposed high LF rating, so I'm delegating those to my sketchbooks. (Look up "Lightfastness test results - Judith Crown" to see the test sheets. My heart sank when I saw it.)
@joyfulldj
@joyfulldj Год назад
@@NelaDunato Hard to find a negative on polychromos; specially if you like pastelmat and can do light over dark. I have the set of 72 from derwent in their green tin I thought it was. And the 72 set of pastels. I love love love the soft naturals and muted tones derwent has. I need a few layers of the poly's for that effect. I don't think one is worse then the other; just what you prefer in the end I guess. Im not a selling artist; for me its just fun to explore and play with it; so lightfast therefor is a bit overrated on my end; if you sell I would try the polychromo's red; tried and worked for me; if you like the creamier feel of a bit softer pencil luminance sells openstock you can opt for a few of their reds if opacity is your style :)

It's amazing how that pan pastel made the background perfect! I finally see a use (for me anyway) for pan pastels! I literally don't have the space for another medium. But I could squeeze in a few dark ones. I wonder about those paints. Are they more like the Kuretaki paints in that they don't really flow? I LOVE the Paul Reubens hot press cotton paper for my Inktense pencils/color pencil work. I like the smoothness I get with sea creatures.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
Yes, very much like the Kuretake gansai tambi but without the gloss in thick passages.
@joyfulldj
@joyfulldj Год назад
The background would drive my ADHD crazy. I would not be able to leave th for two days hahahahaha. And you are right; I have tried hotpress a few times; it's not my thing. I still have the hahnemuhle expression; that pink version, wich is a lot smoother than I am used to. Still trying to think what is the best option for a big background on the size that I have it. Bc Im in no mood to chop that to card size with a paper that is not really all that I expected it to be.

I bought the pencil sharpener recommended but when I got it I noticed that it said do not use with wax or chalk pencils. I realize that this tutorial is done with the derwent oil base pencils. Was wondering if you have used this sharpener with Prismacolor and pastel pencils (since these are what I have) and if you have had good luck using it with them?

Hello Lindsay, I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Christmas. I am writing because you are “the watercolor detective”! Ha Ha! I recently been swatching the Paul Rubens student grade 5 ml 36 tube set that you can get inexpensively. On the tubes it was giving a 3 star (cross) lightfast rating which did not seems accurate to me, so I was going through my swatch binder to compare pigment codes and came across my swatch for the Art Whale 15ml 24 tube set that you did a review on some time ago. Now there are some different colors in each set, but for the same colors, the pigment codes and color names and numbers were exactly the same for both sets (except for one and that was Madder Lake Deep with the same number 331). I was wondering if you tested these two together and/or found a comparison? I know at the time of the Art Whale review you were very curious on who made these paints. I thought that maybe your faithful viewers would be curious too. Thank you for everything that you do and for the fun that you bring to your channel. It is very refreshing and appreciated. Have a wonderful New Years’ filled with lots more excellent content! Cheers!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
Hmmm, I'll have to compare. I really liked the PR professional range but wasn't crazy about their student tubes. I'll have to compare incase I missed something because I really liked art whale. Art whale is made by Superior and I suppose PR could have them make their student range. Pigment codes ate standardized so identical codes isnt too surprising but for ever color, huh. I think white knights might make the PR student full pans as they are identical to sonnet. Often brands outsource the budget lines in their brand. It's a mystery. I'm curious now!
